Abstract

Systems and methods are disclosed herein for monitoring light emissions in electronic devices. The disclosed techniques herein provide for determining a display duration of display devices for a user. Light emission profiles for each of the display devices are determined. A cumulative emissions exposure is determined that is based on the light emission profiles for the display devices and the display duration of the display devices for the user. A determination is made whether the cumulative emissions exposure exceeds a light emission exposure limit set for the user. In a positive determination, an instruction is transmitted to the display devices for execution of a remedial action based on predefined rules.

Claims (34)

1. A method comprising:

in response to determining that an electronic device played a first content of a first content type during a first time period, calculating a first light emission exposure count based on an emission profile associated with the first content type and a duration of the first time period;

in response to determining that the electronic device played a second content of a second type during a second time period, calculating a second light emission exposure count based on an emission profile associated with the second content type and a duration of the second time period;

calculating a cumulative light emission exposure count based on the first light emission exposure count and the second light emission exposure count; and

in response to determining that the cumulative light emission exposure count exceeds a light emission exposure limit, transmitting an instruction to the electronic device for execution of a remedial action.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first light emission exposure is calculated based on the characteristics of the first content played on the electronic device.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the characteristics include a Red, Green, Blue (RGB) value of the first content played on the electronic device.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the RGB value is a set of matrices comprising the RGB value for each pixel of a frame of the first content played on the electronic device.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the remedial action is based on a predefined rule.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the remedial action comprises powering off a display of the electronic device for a predefined time period.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the predefined time period is selected by a user of the electronic device.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein transmitting the instruction to the electronic device comprises transmitting a notification to a user to switch to a display device of a separate electronic device with a lesser light emission profile.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein transmitting the instruction to the electronic device comprises:

determining, after a predefined time period, whether the user has switched to the separate electronic device with the lesser light emission profile; and

in response to the determination that, after the predefined time period, the user has not switched to the separate electronic device with the lesser light emission profile, powering off a display of the electronic device for a predefined period of time.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cumulative light emission exposure is determined based on a predefined ratio of the emission profile to the duration of the first time period.

11. A system for monitoring light emissions of an electronic device, comprising:

communication circuitry configured to retrieve: an emission profile associated with a first content type and an emission profile associated with a second content type; and

control circuitry configured to:

in response to determining that an electronic device played a first content of the first content type during a first time period, calculate a first light emission exposure count based on an emission profile associated with the first content type and a duration of the first time period;

in response to determining that the electronic device played a second content of the second content type during a second time period, calculate a second light emission exposure count based on an emission profile associated with the second content type and a duration of the second time period;

calculate a cumulative light emission exposure count based on the first light emission exposure count and the second light emission exposure count; and

in response to determining that the cumulative light emission exposure count exceeds a light emission exposure limit, transmit an instruction to the electronic device for execution of a remedial action.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first light emission exposure is calculated based on the characteristics of the first content played on the electronic device.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the characteristics include a Red, Green, Blue (RGB) value of the first content played on the electronic device.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the RGB value is a set of matrices comprising the RGB value for each pixel of a frame of the first content played on the electronic device.

15. The system of claim 1 , wherein the remedial action is based on a predefined rule.

16. The system of claim 1 , wherein the remedial action comprises powering off a display of the electronic device for a predefined time period.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the predefined time period is selected by a user of the electronic device.

18. The system of claim 1 , wherein transmitting the instruction to the electronic device comprises transmitting a notification to a user to switch to a display device of a separate electronic device with a lesser light emission profile.

19. The system of claim 18 , wherein transmitting the instruction to the electronic device comprises:

determining, after a predefined time period, whether the user has switched to the separate electronic device with the lesser light emission profile; and

in response to the determination that, after the predefined time period, the user has not switched to the separate electronic device with the lesser light emission profile, powering off a display of the electronic device for a predefined period of time.

20. The system of claim 1 , wherein the cumulative light emission exposure is determined based on a predefined ratio of the emission profile to the duration of the first time period.
