Abstract

A virtual reality system can comprise a virtual reality headset, one or more position tracking sensors, and a computerized architectural design environment. The position tracking sensors can identify a relative location of the user with respect to a physical space. The computerized architectural design environment can comprise a computer-implemented method for displaying a three-dimensional view of an architectural design to a user through the one or more virtual reality components. The method can comprise receiving a communication from the one or more position tracking sensors, rendering at least a portion of an architectural design file, and transmitting to the virtual reality headset the rendered portion of the architectural design file.

Claims (41)

1. A virtual reality module, comprising:

a display screen;

one or more position tracking sensors, wherein the one or more position tracking sensors identify a relative location of a user with respect to a physical space; and

a computer readable storage medium having computer-executable instructions that, when executed, cause the virtual reality module to perform the following:

identify the relative location of the user with respect to the physical space via the one or more position tracking sensors;

display a three-dimensional image of an architectural design on the display screen, wherein the architectural design comprises a design for a particular physical space;

automatically associate the user with a first bookmark corresponding to a pre-determined virtual position and virtual view direction within the displayed architectural design, the first bookmark being selected from a plurality of bookmarks associated with respective pre-determined virtual positions and virtual view directions within the displayed architectural design, wherein the first bookmark is automatically selected for association with the user based upon the identified relative location of the user with respect to the physical space according to the one or more position tracking sensors;

using the pre-determined virtual position and virtual view direction of the first bookmark associated with the user based upon the identified relative location of the user with respect to the physical space to display a starting point for the user within the three-dimensional image, wherein the starting point corresponds to the pre-determined virtual position and virtual view direction of the first bookmark;

receive indicia from one or more position tracking sensors on the virtual reality module that indicate a change in physical position and orientation of the display screen within the physical space;

display a new virtual physical position and a new virtual view within the displayed three-dimensional image of the architectural design;

receive additional indicia from the user the virtual reality module; and

display an additional virtual physical position and an additional virtual view corresponding to a second bookmark within the displayed three-dimensional image of the architectural design.

2. The virtual reality module as recited in claim 1 , wherein the received indicia indicate that the display screen has been tilted or rotated.

3. The virtual reality module as recited in claim 1 , wherein the received indicia indicate that the display screen has been lowered below an initial frame of reference.

4. The virtual reality module as recited in claim 3 , wherein at least a portion of the architectural design is rendered such that a view of the user is from a perspective of a crouched position in response to determining that the user is in the crouched position.

5. The virtual reality module as recited in claim 1 , wherein the virtual reality module comprises a virtual reality headset.

6. The virtual reality module as recited in claim 1 , wherein the virtual reality module comprises a laptop computer.

7. The virtual reality module as recited in claim 1 , wherein the virtual reality module comprises a tablet computer.

8. A computerized method of providing an interactive, virtual experience that enables an end user to view a representation of an architectural design while the end user moves through a physical space for which the architectural design is intended, comprising:

positioning a plurality of sensor modules within a physical space;

providing an architectural design file to a virtual reality module having a display screen and one or more position sensors, wherein the architectural design file includes an architectural design that is renderable to create a three-dimensional image of a new design for the physical space;

receiving an initial communication from at least one of the plurality of sensor modules within the physical space, wherein the communication comprises an indication of a relative physical position and view direction of an end user within the physical space;

automatically associating the end user with a first bookmark corresponding to a pre-determined virtual position and virtual view direction within the architectural design, the first bookmark being selected from a plurality of bookmarks associated with respective pre-determined virtual positions and virtual view directions within the displayed architectural design, wherein the first bookmark is automatically selected for association with the end user based upon the indication of the relative physical position and view direction of the end user within the physical space according to the plurality of sensor modules within the physical space;

using the pre-determined virtual position and virtual view direction of the first bookmark associated with the end user based upon the indication of the relative physical position and view direction of the end user within the physical space to display the three-dimensional image of the new design as an overlay to the physical space on the display screen of the virtual reality module, wherein a point of view shown on the display provides a virtual physical position and a virtual view of the end user corresponding to the pre-determined virtual position and virtual view direction of the first bookmark;

receiving a new communication from at least one of the plurality of sensor modules within the physical space, wherein the new communication comprises an indication of a change in relative physical position of the end user within the physical space; and

displaying on the display screen a new three-dimensional image overlaid against the physical space, wherein the new three-dimensional image provides an updated virtual physical position and updated virtual view for the end user within the display.

9. The computerized method as recited in claim 8 , wherein the physical space comprises a gutted physical space.

10. The computerized method as recited in claim 8 , wherein the virtual reality module comprises a virtual reality headset.

11. The computerized method as recited in claim 8 , wherein the virtual reality module comprises a laptop computer.

12. The computerized method as recited in claim 8 , wherein the virtual reality module comprises a tablet computer.

13. The computerized method as recited in claim 8 , further comprising:

transitioning a user's view within the virtual reality module directly from a first bookmark to a second bookmark of the design file when receiving a communication associated with changing the user's physical position from the first bookmark to the second bookmark;

wherein the first bookmark corresponds to the relative physical position of the end user within the physical space, and the second bookmark corresponds to the change in relative physical position.

14. The computerized method as recited in claim 8 , further comprising:

identifying through one or more of the plurality of sensor modules that the user has changed physical positions; and

rendering a corresponding change for the user within the three-dimensional view of the architectural design on the display screen of the virtual reality module.

15. The computerized method as recited in claim 14 , wherein the initial and new communications from the one or more sensor modules positioned in the physical space indicate a change in at least one of:

a direction that the user is facing; and

a tilt of the end user.

16. The computerized method as recited in claim 15 , wherein determining the new communication indicates that the end user is in a crouched position.

17. The computerized method as recited in claim 16 , wherein the at least a portion of the architectural design file is rendered on the display screen to provide a perspective of a crouched position of the end user relative the virtual view corresponding to the initial communication.
