Abstract

Techniques for inlaying a composite material within a tooling shell are disclosed. In one aspect, an additively manufactured tooling shell is provided, into which a composite material is inlaid and cured. A surface of the tooling shell is provided with indentations or another mechanism to enable adherence between the composite material and the tooling shell. The resulting integrated structure is used as a component in a transport structure.

Claims (20)

1. An integrated structure comprising:

a three-dimensional (3-D) printed tooling shell;

a composite material formed with the tooling shell, wherein the composite material is secured to a surface of the tooling shell,

a first node laid over an edge portion of the composite material; and

a second node separate from the first node, the second node arranged under the edge portion of the composite material and configured to form a clamp with the first node that sandwiches the edge portion of the composite material,

wherein apertures in the first and second nodes align at an area outside the edge portion of the composite material to receive a fastening element for securing the clamp.

2. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the integrated structure is operable for assembly into a transport structure.

3. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the composite material includes a carbon fiber reinforced polymer.

4. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the integrated structure further includes a composite matrix material with adhesive properties.

5. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the 3-D printed tooling shell includes a cavity.

6. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the composite material is formed of inlaid carbon fiber.

7. The structure of claim 1 , wherein the composite material is formed using a composite fabrication process.

8. The integrated structure of claim 1 , wherein the composite material comprises at least two layers.

9. The integrated structure of claim 1 , wherein the fastening element includes a bolt.

10. The integrated structure of claim 1 , further comprising a protrusion extending from one of the first and second nodes and configured to snap into a corresponding recess within an opposite of the first and second nodes upon forcing the nodes together.

11. The integrated structure of claim 1 , wherein:

the first node comprises a first protrusion from the first node, the first protrusion comprising another aperture;

the 3-D printed tooling shell comprises a second protrusion jutting out from the tooling shell and opposing the another aperture of the first protrusion; and

the first protrusion is configured to snap-fit via into the second protrusion via the another aperture.

12. The integrated structure of claim 11 , wherein the second protrusion is affixed to a vehicle suspension system, and the first protrusion is configured to snap-fit into the second protrusion via the another aperture to fasten the integrated structure to the suspension system.
