Abstract

Methods and systems are described for recommending providers of media content to users viewing over-the-top content based on quality of service.

Claims (71)

1. A method comprising:

receiving a request from a user device to access a currently available first media asset from a particular streaming content provider;

determining a first quality of service for the user device to receive the currently available first media asset from the particular streaming content provider at a first time;

comparing the first quality of service for the user device to receive the currently available first media asset from the particular streaming content provider at the first time to a threshold quality of service, wherein:

the first quality of service is sufficient for the user device to, at the first time, receive the currently available first media asset from the particular content provider and play the currently available first media asset at the first time in a first manner; and

the threshold quality of service enables the currently available first media asset to be received at the user device from the particular content provider and to be played at the user device in a second manner that results in a higher quality user experience than the first manner;

in response to determining that the first quality of service for the user device to receive the currently available first media asset from the particular streaming content provider is less than the threshold quality of service, generating for display an option to receive an alert when the first quality of service for the user device to receive the currently available first media asset from the particular streaming content provider equals or exceeds the threshold quality of service;

receiving selection of the option to receive the alert; and

in response to determining, at a second time that is later than the first time and after receiving selection of the option to receive the alert, that the first quality of service for the user device to receive the currently available first media asset from the particular streaming content provider equals or exceeds the threshold quality of service, providing the alert to the user device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the particular streaming content provider is a first streaming content provider, the method further comprising:

determining a second quality of service for the user device to receive the currently available first media asset from a second streaming content provider at the first time;

comparing the second quality of service for the user device to receive the currently available first media asset to the threshold quality of service; and

determining the second quality of service for the user device to receive the currently available first media asset is less than the threshold quality of service;

wherein the alert is provided to the user device in response to determining that at least one of the first quality of service for the user device to receive the currently available first media asset or the second quality of service for the user device to receive the currently available first media asset equals or exceeds the threshold quality of service.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first quality of service for the user device to receive the currently available first media asset from the particular streaming content provider at the first time is derived from a plurality of quality of service characteristics comprising error rate, throughput lag, transmission delay, and jitter.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the first quality of service for the user device to receive the currently available first media asset from the particular streaming content provider at the first time comprises:

determining a first quality of service characteristic and a second quality of service characteristic;

assigning a first weight to the first quality of service characteristic and a second weight to the second quality of service characteristic; and

determining a weighted average for the first quality of service characteristic and the second quality of service characteristic.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the first quality of service for the user device to receive the currently available first media asset from the particular streaming content provider at the first time comprises:

querying the user device for a checksum value; and

receiving the checksum value from the user device in response to the query.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

inputting the first quality of service for the user device to receive the currently available first media asset from the particular streaming content provider at the first time into a database listing ratings corresponding to different quality of services;

comparing the first quality of service for the user device to receive the currently available first media asset from the particular streaming content provider at the first time to the different quality of services to determine a rating for the first quality of service; and

generating for display the rating simultaneously with the media asset listing.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first quality of service for the user device to receive the currently available first media asset is determined by the user device or a server.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising downloading, without requiring further user input, the currently available first media asset.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a user input to modify a demand on a communications network of the user device; and

in response to receiving the user input to modify the demand on the communications network of the user device, adjusting the threshold quality of service.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the option is a first option, the method further comprising:

in response to determining, after receiving selection of the first option to receive the alert, that the first quality of service for the user device to receive the currently available first media asset from the particular streaming content provider continues to be less than the threshold quality of service:

generating for display a second option to download the currently available first media asset; and

in response to receiving selection of the second option, causing the currently available first media asset to be downloaded.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that the request from the user device to access the currently available media asset from the particular streaming content provider is associated with a particular media asset format; and

determining the threshold quality of service based on the particular media asset format associated with the request from the user device to access the currently available media asset from the particular streaming content provider.

12. A system comprising:

input/output circuitry configured to:

receive a request from a user device to access a currently available first media asset from a particular streaming content provider;

control circuitry configured to:

determine a first quality of service for the user device to receive the currently available first media asset from the particular streaming content provider at a first time;

compare the first quality of service for the user device to receive the currently available first media asset from the particular streaming content provider at the first time to a threshold quality of service, wherein:

the first quality of service is sufficient for the user device to, at the first time, receive the currently available first media asset from the particular content provider and play the currently available first media asset at the first time in a first manner; and

the threshold quality of service enables the currently available first media asset to be received at the user device from the particular content provider and to be played at the user device in a second manner that results in a higher quality user experience than the first manner;

in response to determining that the first quality of service for the user device to receive the currently available first media asset from the particular streaming content provider is less than the threshold quality of service, generate for display an option to receive an alert when the first quality of service for the user device to receive the currently available first media asset from the particular streaming content provider equals or exceeds the threshold quality of service;

receive selection of the option to receive the alert; and

in response to determining, at a second time that is later than the first time and after receiving selection of the option to receive the alert, that the first quality of service for the user device to receive the currently available first media asset from the particular streaming content provider equals or exceeds the threshold quality of service, provide the alert to the user device.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the particular streaming content provider is a first streaming content provider, and the control circuitry is further configured to:

determine a second quality of service for the user device to receive the currently available first media asset from a second streaming content provider at the first time;

compare the second quality of service for the user device to receive the currently available first media asset to the threshold quality of service;

determine the second quality of service for the user device to receive the currently available first media asset is less than the threshold quality of service; and

provide the alert to the user device in response to determining that at least one of the first quality of service for the user device to receive the currently available first media asset or the second quality of service for the user device to receive the currently available first media asset equals or exceeds the threshold quality of service.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the first quality of service for the user device to receive the currently available first media asset from the particular streaming content provider at the first time is derived from a plurality of quality of service characteristics comprising error rate, throughput lag, transmission delay, and jitter.

determining a first quality of service characteristic and a second quality of service characteristic;

assigning a first weight to the first quality of service characteristic and a second weight to the second quality of service characteristic; and
