Abstract

A surgical tool comprising a drive housing having first and second ends, a lead screw extending between the first and second ends and rotatably coupled to the first end at a drive input, a carriage mounted to the lead screw at a carriage nut and movable within the drive housing between the first and second ends, and an instrument driver arranged at an end of a robotic arm and matable with the first end. A drive output is matable with the drive input such that rotation of the drive output correspondingly rotates the drive input and the lead screw to thereby translate the carriage nut along the lead screw. A fin may be connected to the carriage and accessible by a user from an exterior of the drive housing to manually translate the carriage along the lead screw and thereby backdrive the drive output.

Claims (46)

1. A surgical tool, comprising:

a drive housing having opposing first and second ends and a drive input rotatably mounted to the drive housing at the first end;

a carriage mounted entirely within the drive housing and movable between the first and second ends via actuation of the drive input, the carriage including one or more distal layers and one or more proximal layers attachable to the one or more distal layers;

an instrument driver matable with the drive housing at the first end and including a drive output matable with the drive input such that rotation of the drive output correspondingly rotates the drive input to thereby translate the carriage within the drive housing;

an elongate shaft coupled to and extending distally from the carriage and penetrating the first end and the instrument driver;

a fin connected to the carriage and accessible by a user at an exterior of the drive housing, the fin being manually translatable along the exterior of the drive housing to thereby translate the carriage and simultaneously advance or retract the elongate shaft; and

a bailout mechanism operable to unlock the one or more proximal layers from the one or more distal layers such that the one or more proximal layers are removable from the drive housing,

wherein the bailout mechanism includes a releasable pin movable between a locked position, where the one or more proximal layers are secured to the one or more distal layers, and an unlocked position, where the one or more proximal layers are unsecured from and movable relative to the one or more distal layers.

2. The surgical tool of claim 1 , wherein the drive housing includes a shroud extending between the first and second end ends and the fin protrudes radially outward through a window defined in the shroud and extending between the first and second ends.

3. The surgical tool of claim 1 , wherein, when in the locked position, the releasable pin is attached to a locking feature provided within a proximal most layer of the one or more distal layers and the drive input is operatively coupled to the one or more distal layers.

4. The surgical tool of claim 1 , wherein the fin provides an overhanging portion positioned radially outward from the drive housing and extending distally from the fin to cover at least a portion of the one or more distal layers.

5. The surgical tool of claim 1 , further comprising an end effector arranged at a distal end of the elongate shaft.

6. The surgical tool of claim 5 , wherein the carriage comprises one or more distal layers and one or more proximal layers removably secured to the one or more distal layers, the surgical tool further comprising:

a position recognition system programmed to remember a last known position of the end effector when the one or more proximal layers are removed from the one or more distal layers.

7. A method of positioning a surgical tool, the method comprising:

grasping onto a fin of a user interface operatively coupled to a drive housing of the surgical tool, the surgical tool including:

a drive input rotatably mounted to a first end of the drive housing;

an instrument driver matable with the drive housing at the first end;

a carriage mounted entirely within the drive housing and movable between the first and second ends via actuation of the drive input, wherein the carriage includes one or more distal layers and one or more proximal layers attachable to the one or more distal layers, and the fin is operatively coupled to the carriage and accessible by a user from an exterior of the drive housing;

an elongate shaft coupled to and extending distally from the carriage and penetrating the first end and the instrument driver; and

a bailout mechanism forming part of the fin and including a releasable pin;

moving the releasable pin from a locked position, where the one or more proximal layers are secured to the one or more distal layers, and an unlocked position, where the one or more proximal layers are unsecured from and movable relative to the one or more distal layers;

manually moving the fin along the exterior of the drive housing and thereby removing the one or more proximal layers from the drive housing.

The method of claim 7 , wherein the surgical tool further includes an end effector arranged at a distal end of the elongate shaft, and one or more distal layers and one or more proximal layers removably secured to the one or more distal layers to form the carriage, the method further comprising:

monitoring a position of the end effector with a position recognition system;

removing the one or more proximal layers from the one or more distal layers; and

remembering a last known position of the end effector when the one or more proximal layers are removed from the one or more distal layers.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

re-installing the one or more proximal layers on the one or more distal layers; and

determining with the position recognition system whether the one or more proximal layers were previously installed on the one or more distal layers.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

positively determining with the position recognition system that the one or more proximal layers were previously installed on the one or more distal layers; and

permitting with the position recognition system manual backdriving of a drive output of the instrument driver to thereby manually translate the end effector.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising providing a haptic feedback indication with the position recognition system when the end effector is in the last known position.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the surgical tool is a first surgical tool and the one or more proximal layers comprise a first set of the one or more proximal layers, the method further comprising:

installing a second set of the one or more proximal layers on the one or more distal layers corresponding to a second surgical tool;

determining with the position recognition system that the second set of the one or more proximal layers were correspond to the second surgical tool and were not previously installed on the one or more distal layers; and

preventing manual translation of the end effector beyond the last known position with the position recognition system.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the end effector comprises a first end effector, the method further comprising:

determining with the position recognition system whether the second surgical tool includes the first end effector or a second end effector different than the first end effector; and

permitting backdriving of the drive output with the position recognition system when the first and second end effectors are similar.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising preventing manual translation of the second end effector beyond the last known position with the position recognition system.

15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising providing a haptic feedback indication with the position recognition system when the second end effector is in the last known position.

16. The surgical tool of claim 1 , further comprising:

a lead screw extending between and rotatably mounted to the first and second ends, the lead screw being rotatably coupled at the drive input; and

a carriage nut provided within the carriage and mounted to the lead screw such that rotation of the drive input correspondingly rotates the lead screw and thereby translates the carriage along the lead screw and between the first and second ends.
