Abstract

A multimedia content provisioning device, system and method. The device includes a network interface to communicatively couple to a communications network, to connect to one or more multimedia devices coupled to the communications network, to exchange media processing capabilities between the one or more multimedia devices after establishing a connection therebetween, to generate a list of broadcast media sources and provide the list to each of the one or more multimedia devices in which media processing capabilities are exchanged, to provide a list of broadcast media content receivable from a broadcast media source selected from the generated list at the one or more media devices, and to stream a broadcast media content to the one or more media devices at which a selection from the list of broadcast media content is made, the content being streamed according to the media processing capabilities received therefrom, and to display a multimedia content control user interface at the one or more media devices in which broadcast media content is being streamed.

Claims (35)

1. A multimedia content provisioning device, comprising:

one or more processors to control operations thereof and to generate a list of broadcast media sources that provide broadcast media content;

a plurality of processors to receive corresponding types of broadcast media content from broadcast media sources;

a storage device to store at least a portion of received broadcast media content; and

a network interface to communicatively couple the multimedia content provisioning device to a communications network, to connect the multimedia content provisioning device to one or more multimedia devices coupled to the communications network, to exchange media processing capabilities between the multimedia content provisioning device and the one or more multimedia devices after establishing a connection therebetween, to provide the generated list of broadcast media sources to each of the one or more multimedia devices in which media processing capabilities are exchanged, to provide a list of broadcast media content receivable from a broadcast media source selected from the generated list at the one or more media devices, to stream a broadcast media content to the one or more media devices at which a selection from the list of broadcast media content is made, the broadcast media content being streamed to the one or more multimedia devices according to the media processing capabilities received therefrom, and to display a multimedia content control user interface at the one or more media devices in which broadcast media content is being streamed.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the multimedia content control user interface includes operations to play the content, to pause the content, to fast forward the content, to rewind the content, to stop playing the content, to skip back through the content and to skip forward through the content.

3. The device of claim 2 , wherein the multimedia content provisioning device is an extended connectivity multimedia device.

4. The device of claim 3 , wherein the one or more processors generates the multimedia content control user interface displaying at the one or more media devices.

5. The device of claim 3 , wherein the multimedia content control user interface displaying at the one or more media devices is received from the selected broadcast media source together with the streaming broadcast media content.

6. The device of claim 5 , wherein the communications network is the Internet.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the multimedia content provisioning device is a set-top box.

8. A system to communicate broadcast media content between a media controller and a plurality of media devices, the system comprising:

a communications network;

a media controller including:

a network interface to communicatively couple the controller to the communications network; and

one or more processors to receive broadcast media content from one or more broadcast media sources, to generate a list of the broadcast media sources having broadcast media content according to media processing capabilities of a plurality of multimedia devices, to provide the respective generated list to each of the one or more media devices, and in response to receiving a selection of one of the broadcast media sources from the one or more of the multimedia devices, to provide a corresponding list of broadcast media content receivable from the selected broadcast media source at each of the one or more multimedia devices, to stream broadcast media content to each of the multimedia player devices at which a selection from the list of broadcast media content is performed, the broadcast media content being streamed to each of multimedia devices according to the media processing capabilities received therefrom, and to display a multimedia content control user interface at each of the multimedia devices in which broadcast media content is being streamed; and

a plurality of multimedia devices each configured to initiate a connection to the media controller, to exchange the media processing capabilities with the media controller after establishing a connection, to receive a first input selecting one of the broadcast media sources provided on the list of broadcast media sources, to receive a second input selecting a broadcast media content from the list of broadcast media content provided thereat, and to receive the selected broadcast media content together with a multimedia content control user interface.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the multimedia content control user interface includes operations to play the content, to pause the content, to fast forward the content, to rewind the content, to stop playing the content, to skip back through the content and to skip forward through the content.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the media controller is an extended connectivity multimedia device.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the extended connectivity multimedia device generates the multimedia content control user interface displaying at each of the multimedia devices.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the multimedia content control user interface displaying at each of the multimedia devices is received from the selected broadcast media source together with the streaming broadcast media content.

13. The device of claim 8 , wherein the communications network is the Internet.

14. The device of claim 8 , wherein the media controller is a set-top box.

15. The device of claim 8 , wherein the media controller is a multimedia communications device.

16. A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions for provisioning multimedia content, the instructions being executed by one more processors of a multimedia device to:

generate a list of broadcast media sources that provide broadcast media content;

receive broadcast media content from broadcast media sources;

store at least a portion of received broadcast media content;

communicatively couple a network interface of the multimedia device to a communications network;

connect the multimedia device to one or more multimedia player devices coupled to the communications network;

exchange media processing capabilities between the multimedia device and the one or more multimedia player devices after establishing a connection therebetween;

provide the generated list of broadcast media sources to each of the one or more multimedia player devices in which media processing capabilities are exchanged;

provide a list of broadcast media content receivable from a broadcast media source selected from the generated list at the one or more media player devices;

stream a broadcast media content to the one or more media player devices at which a selection from the list of broadcast media content is made, the broadcast media content being streamed to the one or more multimedia devices according to the media processing capabilities received therefrom; and

display a multimedia content control user interface at the one or more media devices in which broadcast media content is being streamed.
