Abstract

A knocking gesture access control system includes a local access assembly, a mobile device, a storage medium, and a processor. The assembly is adapted to operate between access and no-access states, and includes a controller to effect actuation between the states, and a receiver. The device is adapted to be carried by a user, and includes a microphone configured to sense a knocking gesture performed by the user signifying an intent to gain entry. The storage medium is configured to store an application and preprogrammed knocking gesture data associated with the knocking gesture. The processor is configured to receive the knocking gesture sensed by the microphone and execute the application to compare the knocking gesture to the preprogrammed knocking gesture data, and output a command signal to the controller via the receiver to effect actuation between states if the knocking gesture sufficiently compares to the preprogrammed knocking gesture data.

Claims (25)

1 . A knocking gesture access control system comprising:

a local access assembly adapted to operate between an access state and a no-access state, the local access assembly including a controller to effect actuation between the access state and the no-access state, and a signal receiver;

a mobile device adapted to be carried by a user, the mobile device including a microphone configured to sense a knocking gesture performed by the user signifying an intent to gain entry;

one or more electronic storage mediums configured to store an application and preprogrammed knocking gesture data associated with the performed knocking gesture; and

one or more processors configured to receive the knocking gesture sensed by the microphone and execute the application to compare the knocking gesture to the preprogrammed knocking gesture data, and output a command signal to the controller via the receiver to effect actuation from the no-access state to the access state if the knocking gesture sufficiently compares to the preprogrammed knocking gesture data.

2 . The knocking gesture access control system set forth in claim 1 , wherein the preprogrammed knocking gesture data includes a frequency pattern.

3 . The knocking gesture access control system set forth in claim 2 , wherein the mobile device includes an inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensor system configured to detect motion associated with the knocking gesture.

4 . The knocking gesture access control system set forth in claim 3 , wherein the application includes preprogrammed scenario data including the preprogrammed knocking gesture data and preprogrammed motion data, and the application is configured to compare the preprogrammed motion data to the motion detected by the IMU sensor system.

5 . The knocking gesture access control system set forth in claim 4 , wherein the knocking gesture is performed upon a surface of the mobile device.

6 . The knocking gesture access control system set forth in claim 4 , wherein the knocking gesture is performed upon a surface of a door remote from the mobile device.

7 . The knocking gesture access control system set forth in claim 4 , wherein the preprogrammed motion data includes a motion frequency pattern indicative of the knocking gesture, and the application is configured to match at least a portion of the motion to the motion frequency pattern.

8 . The knocking gesture access control system set forth in claim 7 , wherein the IMU sensor system detects a periodic variation in the motion of the phone indicative of the knocking gesture that is smaller than the variation generated by the periodicity of walking, but large than the user standing still.

9 . The knocking gesture access control system set forth in claim 1 , wherein the mobile device includes the one or more storage mediums and the one or more processors.

10 . The knocking gesture access control system set forth in claim 1 , wherein the mobile device includes one or more of an inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensor system, an environment detector system, and a received signal strength indicator (RSSI) module for confirming recognition of the knocking gesture.

11 . A method of operating a knocking gesture access control system comprising:

carrying a mobile device by a user;

performing a knocking gesture by the user creating an audible sound with a frequency pattern, and with an intent to gain access via actuation of an access assembly;

detecting the audible sound by a microphone of the mobile device;

comparing the frequency pattern of the audible sound associated with the knocking gesture to a preprogrammed frequency pattern by an application executed by a controller of the mobile device;

confirming the preprogrammed frequency pattern compares to the frequency pattern; and

sending a command signal from the mobile device to the access assembly to effect actuation that provides access to the user.

12 . The method set forth in claim 11 , wherein the knocking gesture is performed upon a surface of the mobile device.

13 . The method set forth in claim 11 , wherein the knocking gesture is a device-free gesture.

14 . The method set forth in claim 13 , wherein the knocking gesture is performed upon a surface of a door secured by the access assembly.

15 . The method set forth in claim 13 , wherein the knocking gesture is performed upon a surface of the access assembly.
