Abstract

Devices and methods for providing localized pressure to a region of a patient's heart to improve heart functioning. The devices include a cardiac jacket made of a flexible biocompatible material and at least one inflatable bladder disposed on an interior surface of the jacket. Inflation of the bladder causes the bladder to expand to exert localized pressure against a region of the heart. In some cases, a phase-change material is filled into the bladder as a liquid and the material solidifies at body temperature. In some cases, a positioning tool is used prior to the implantation of the jacket in order to determine effective positions for the inflatable bladder(s) to be located on the heart to improve heart functioning.

Claims (21)

1. A cardiac implant positioning tool comprising:

a handle having a proximal end portion and a distal end portion, wherein the handle is configured for a user to manually control the distal end portion to be located at one or more desired positions on an exterior of a heart of a patient by manually manipulating the proximal end portion of the handle;

a fillable bladder coupled to the distal end portion of the handle, wherein a distal edge of the handle extends distally beyond a distal edge of the fillable bladder and the distal edge of the handle surrounds a majority of the fillable bladder; and

a tube fluidly coupled to the fillable bladder and extending to the proximal end portion of the handle.

2. The cardiac implant positioning tool of claim 1 , wherein the fillable bladder includes one or more side walls with one or more undulations.

3. The cardiac implant positioning tool of claim 2 , wherein the one or more side walls with the one or more undulations are configured for expansion of the fillable bladder without stretching a material of the fillable bladder.

4. The cardiac implant positioning tool of claim 2 , wherein the fillable bladder comprises:

a base layer; and

an expanding layer coupled to the base layer.

5. The cardiac implant positioning tool of claim 4 , wherein the tube is in fluid communication with an interior space defined between the base layer and the expanding layer.

6. The cardiac implant positioning tool of claim 5 , wherein the tube is configured to convey an inflation fluid into the interior space.

7. The cardiac implant positioning tool of claim 4 , wherein the expanding layer comprises:

the one or more side walls; and

a pressure exerting surface configured to contact the heart.

8. The cardiac implant positioning tool of claim 7 , wherein:

the one or more side walls comprise two side walls; and

the pressure exerting surface is positioned between the two side walls.

9. The cardiac implant position tool of claim 4 , wherein the base layer and the expanding layer are bonded together around a periphery of the fillable bladder.

10. The cardiac implant position tool of claim 4 , wherein the fillable bladder comprises an intermediate layer positioned between the base layer and the expanding layer wherein the intermediate layer extends around a periphery of the fillable bladder.

11. The cardiac implant positioning tool of claim 1 , wherein a proximal end of the tube extends proximally beyond the proximal end portion of the handle.

12. The cardiac implant positioning tool of claim 1 , wherein the fillable bladder is configured to transition between a low profile and an expanded profile.
