Abstract

Systems, method sand computer readable medium are provided for proving a cloud-native OpenRan architecture. In one embodiment a system includes a 5G/4G/3G/2G cloud-native Open Radio Access Network (RAN) architecture open and standardized across multiple domains; wherein the multiple domains include at least one of RAN, edge, core, orchestration and analytics; and wherein the system includes an EPC virtual stack; a Radio Virtualization stack; and an Open RAN orchestrator in communication with the EPC virtual stack and the Radio Virtualization stack, wherein the Open Ran orchestrator provides communication between any haul in communication with the EPC virtual stack and any core in communication with the Radio Virtualization stack.

Claims (29)

1 . A wireless communication system comprising:

a core-network virtualization stack in communication with multiple radio access nodes that operate according to respective radio access technologies, wherein the core-network virtualization stack virtualizes multiple core networks into resources for the multiple radio access nodes, and wherein each radio access node defines at least one respective cell;

a radio virtualization stack having a virtual baseband unit (vBBU) and being in communication with the multiple core networks, wherein the radio virtualization stack virtualizes the multiple radio access nodes into dynamically-allocable resources; and

an orchestrator in communication with the multiple radio access nodes via the core-network virtualization stack and in communication with the multiple core networks via the radio virtualization stack, wherein the orchestrator facilitates communication, via the core-network virtualization stack and the radio virtualization stack, between the radio access nodes and the core networks.

2 . The wireless communication system of claim 1 , wherein the orchestrator facilitates communication between any of the multiple radio access nodes and any of the core networks.

3 . The wireless communication system of claim 1 , wherein at least two of the multiple core networks are operated by different respective operators than each other.

4 . The wireless communication system of claim 1 , wherein the multiple core networks provide connectivity with a plurality of services.

5 . The wireless communication system of claim 1 , wherein the vBBU is software-upgradeable to support multiple radio access technologies.

6 . The wireless communication system of claim 1 , wherein the wireless communication system uses 3GPP standard interfaces to communicate with nearby macro cells or Wi-Fi access points.

7 . The wireless communication system of claim 1 , wherein the wireless communication system is configured to use standard X2 interfaces to communicate with nearby 4G macro cells, wherein the orchestrator is configured to use Iu-CS and Iu-PS interfaces to communicate with a mobile switching center (MSC) and a 3G packet core, and wherein the orchestrator is configured to use an SWu interface to communicate with Wi-Fi UEs.

8 . The wireless communication system of claim 1 , wherein the wireless communication system supports network slicing.

9 . A method of providing a cloud-native Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) architecture, the method comprising:

providing a core-network virtualization stack in communication with multiple radio access nodes that operate according to respective radio access technologies, wherein the core-network virtualization stack virtualizes multiple core networks into resources for the multiple radio access nodes, and wherein each radio access node defines at least one respective cell;

providing a radio virtualization stack having a virtual baseband unit (vBBU) and being in communication with the multiple core networks, wherein the radio virtualization stack virtualizes the multiple radio access nodes into dynamically-allocable resources; and

providing an orchestrator in communication with the multiple radio access nodes via the core-network virtualization stack and in communication with the multiple core networks via the radio virtualization stack, wherein the orchestrator facilitates communication, via the core-network virtualization stack and the radio virtualization stack, between the radio access nodes and the core networks.

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the orchestrator facilitates communication between any of the multiple radio access nodes and any of the core networks.

11 . The method of claim 9 , wherein at least two of the multiple core networks are operated by different respective operators than each other.

12 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the multiple core networks provide connectivity with a plurality of services.

13 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the vBBU is software-upgradeable to support multiple radio access technologies.

14 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the wireless communication system uses 3GPP standard interfaces to communicate with nearby macro cells or Wi-Fi access points.

15 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the wireless communication system is configured to use standard X2 interfaces to communicate with nearby 4G macro cells, wherein the orchestrator is configured to use Iu-CS and Iu-PS interfaces to communicate with a mobile switching center (MSC) and a 3G packet core, and wherein the orchestrator is configured to use an SWu interface to communicate with Wi-Fi UEs.

16 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the wireless communication system supports network slicing.

17 . An Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) controller configured to support communication between multiple radio access nodes and multiple core networks, wherein the Open RAN controller comprises:

a core-network virtualization stack, wherein the core-network virtualization stack is configured to communicate with multiple radio access nodes that operate according to respective radio access technologies and is configured to virtualize multiple core networks into resources for the multiple radio access nodes, wherein each radio access node defines at least one respective cell;

a radio virtualization stack, wherein the radio virtualization stack is configured to define a virtual baseband unit (vBBU), to communicate with the multiple core networks, and to virtualize the multiple radio access nodes into dynamically-allocable resources; and

an orchestrator, wherein the orchestrator is configured to communicate with the multiple radio access nodes via the core-network virtualization stack, to communicate with the multiple core networks via the radio virtualization stack, and to facilitate communication, via the core-network virtualization stack and the radio virtualization stack, between the radio access nodes and the core networks.

18 . The Open RAN controller of claim 17 , wherein the orchestrator is configured to facilitate communication between any of the multiple radio access nodes and any of the core networks.
