Abstract

An apparatus for fixing a wearable structure and/or a user-feedback element to a user is provided. The apparatus includes a wearable structure configured to be worn by a user, and a grounding assembly, coupled to the wearable structure. The grounding assembly includes: (i) an inflatable bladder, coupled to a first portion of the wearable structure, and (ii) a cord, coupled to a second portion of the wearable structure and the inflatable bladder. The inflatable bladder is configured to receive a fluid from a source. The cord is configured to tighten around a portion of the user's body according to and in proportion with the fluid pressure inside the inflatable bladder.

Claims (32)

1. A wearable device comprising:

a wearable structure configured to be worn by a user; and

a grounding assembly, coupled to the wearable structure, the grounding assembly including:

(i) an inflatable bladder that is (a) coupled to a first portion of the wearable structure, (b) fluidically coupled to a source via a conduit, and (c) configured to receive a fluid from the source via the conduit; and

(ii) a cord, distinct from the conduit, that is (a) coupled to a second portion of the wearable structure and the inflatable bladder and (b) configured to tighten around a portion of the user's body according to and in proportion with a fluid pressure inside the inflatable bladder, wherein a first portion of the cord is configured to wrap partially around the inflatable bladder while a second portion of the cord is configured to wrap around the portion of the user's body.

2. The wearable device of claim 1 , further comprising:

at least one actuator, coupled to the wearable structure, the at least one actuator configured to impart a haptic stimulation to the user at a target location,

wherein the cord is further configured to secure the at least one actuator to the user at the target location when tightened around the portion of the user's body.

3. The wearable device of claim 1 , wherein:

at least a portion of the cord is wrapped, at least partially, around the inflatable bladder; and

the inflatable bladder is configured to pull the cord in a direction when the fluid pressure inside the inflatable bladder satisfies a threshold pressure, thereby causing the cord to tighten around the portion of the user's body.

4. The wearable device of claim 1 , wherein the cord is configured to be wound around the portion of the user's body in a predefined pattern.

5. The wearable device of claim 4 , wherein:

the portion of the user's body includes one or more joints; and

the predefined pattern of the cord is designed to not encumber the one or more joints of the portion of the user's body.

6. The wearable device of claim 5 , wherein:

the grounding assembly further includes a plurality of brackets coupled to the wearable structure; and

the cord is fed through the plurality of brackets to form the predefined pattern.

7. The wearable device of claim 6 , wherein:

the portion of the user's body is a finger of the user;

one or more first brackets of the plurality of brackets are positioned on a palmar side of the wearable structure; and

one or more second brackets of the plurality of brackets are positioned on a dorsal side of the wearable structure.

8. The wearable device of claim 1 , wherein the second portion of the wearable structure is configured to receive the portion of the user's body.

9. The wearable device of claim 1 , wherein:

the source is in communication with a computing device; and

the source is configured to change the fluid pressure in the inflatable bladder in response to receiving one or more signals from the computing device.

10. The wearable device of claim 9 , wherein:

the computing device is in communication with a head-mounted display that presents content to the user, the head-mounted display including an electronic display; and

the one or more signals correspond to content displayed on the electronic display.

11. The wearable device of claim 1 , wherein:

the source is a pneumatic device; and

the inflatable bladder is pneumatically coupled to the pneumatic device.
