Abstract

Apparatus comprises adapter and speaker system. Adapter is configured to plug into port of personal digital audio player. Speaker system is in communication with adapter, and comprises multiple acoustic transducers, programmable processor circuit, and wireless communication circuit. In first operational mode, processor circuit receives, via adapter, and processes digital audio content from personal digital audio player into which adapter is plugged, and the multiple acoustic transducers output the received audio content from the personal digital audio player. In second operational mode, wireless communication circuit receives digital audio content from a remote digital audio source over a wireless network, processor circuit processes the digital audio content received from remote digital audio source, and the multiple acoustic transducers output the audio content received from the remote digital audio source.

Claims (51)

1. Headphones comprising:

a pair of first and second wireless earphones to be worn simultaneously by a use,

wherein each of the first and second wireless earphones comprises:

at least one acoustic transducer for producing audible sound; and

a system-on-chip (SOC) that comprises:

a wireless communication circuit; and

a processor circuit; and

wherein the first wireless earphone comprises a user-actuatable, user-accessible pressure switch, wherein, upon a user-activation of the pressure switch, the wireless communication circuit of the first wireless earphone transmits a wireless communication to a remote device that is in communication with the first wireless headphone via a wireless communication link;

wherein the wireless communication circuit of each wireless earphone is for receiving audio content streamed wirelessly to the wireless earphone from a first audio content source, such that the first and second wireless earphones are configured to play the audio content streamed wirelessly to the wireless earphones; and

wherein each wireless earphone is configured to, in response to detection of an incoming wireless communication to the user:

stop playing the audio content streamed wirelessly to the wireless earphone; and

output audio of the incoming wireless communication via the at least one acoustic transducer of the wireless earphone.

2. The headphones of claim 1 , wherein:

each SOC further comprises a memory that stores firmware executable by the processor circuit of the SOC; and

the firmware stored by the memories of the SOCs of the first and second wireless earphones comprise firmware pushed wirelessly to the headphones via a wireless communication link.

3. The headphones of claim 2 , wherein each of the first and second earphones comprises a rechargeable power source.

4. The headphones of claim 3 , wherein each of the rechargeable power sources comprises a wirelessly chargeable circuit component.

5. The headphones of claim 3 , wherein each SOC further comprises a buffer for caching the audio content received wirelessly by the headphones.

6. The headphones of claim 3 , further comprising a docking station for holding at least the first wireless earphone, wherein the docking station is for charging at least the first earphone when the docking station holds at least the first earphone.

7. The headphones of claim 6 , wherein each of the first and second earphones comprise an earbud.

8. The headphones of claim 3 , wherein:

the first wireless earphone comprises a microphone; and

the processor circuit of the first wireless earphone is configured to, upon activation of the microphone by the user, transmit audio captured by the microphone to a remote device.

9. The headphones of claim 8 , wherein the processor circuit of each SOC comprises digital signal processing circuitry that is configured to provide a sound quality enhancement for the audio content played by wireless earphone.

10. The headphones of claim 9 , wherein the processor circuit of each SOC comprises baseband processing circuitry.

11. The headphones of claim 1 , wherein:

each of the first and second wireless earphones comprises a microphone; and

the processor circuit of the SOC of each of the first and second wireless earphones is configured to perform noise cancelling on the audible sound produced by the at least one acoustic transducer of the wireless earphone.

12. The headphones of claim 1 , wherein the processor circuit for each of the first and second wireless earphones is configured to transition from playing audio content streamed wirelessly to the headphones from a first digital audio source via a first wireless communication link to playing audio content streamed wirelessly to the headphones from a second digital audio source via a second wireless communication link automatically based on, at least in part, a signal strength for the second wireless communication link.

13. The headphones of claim 1 , wherein the processor circuit of the SOC of the first wireless earphone is for, upon activation of a user control of the headphones, initiating transmission of a request to a remote device.

14. The headphones of claim 1 , wherein the processor circuit of the SOC of the first wireless earphone is configured to, upon activation of a user control of the headphones, transmit data about the headphones to a remote device.

15. A system comprising:

a mobile computing device of a first user; and

a first wireless headphone set that is configured to wirelessly communicate with the mobile computing device via a wireless data communication link, wherein the first wireless headphone set comprise a pair of first and second wireless earphones to be worn simultaneously by the user, wherein the first and second wireless earphones are separate such that when the first and second wireless earphones are worn by the user the first and second earphones are not physically connected, and wherein each of the first and second wireless earphones comprises:

at least one acoustic transducer for producing audible sound; and

a system-on-chip (SOC) that comprises:

a wireless communication circuit; and

a processor circuit; and

wherein the first wireless earphone comprises a user-actuatable, user-accessible pressure switch, wherein, upon a user-activation of the pressure switch, the wireless communication circuit of the first wireless earphone transmits a wireless communication to a remote device that is in communication with the first wireless headphone;

wherein the wireless communication circuit of each wireless earphone is for receiving audio content streamed wirelessly to the wireless earphones from the mobile computing via the wireless data communication link, such that the first and second wireless earphones are configured to play the audio content streamed wirelessly to the wireless earphones; and

wherein each wireless earphone is configured to, in response to detection of an incoming wireless communication to the user:

stop playing the audio content streamed wirelessly to the wireless earphone; and

output audio of the incoming wireless communication via the at least one acoustic transducer of the wireless earphone.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the mobile computer device comprises a screen that is configured to display a graphical user interface through which a user of the first wireless headphone set selects an audio control setting for the first wireless headphone set to be applied to the first wireless headphone set when the first wireless headphone set receives the audio control setting via the wireless data communication link.

17. The system of claim 16 , further comprising a docking station for holding at least the first wireless earphone, wherein the docking station is for charging at least the first earphone when the docking station holds at least the first earphone.
