Abstract

An extended wear electrocardiography patch is provided. A flexible backing is formed of an elongated strip of stretchable material. An electrocardiographic electrode is affixed to and conductively exposed on a contact surface of each end of the elongated strip. A flexible circuit is affixed on each end of the elongated strip. A non-conductive receptacle is adhered on one of the ends of the elongated strip on a surface opposite the contact surface and removably receives an electrocardiography monitor operable to obtain electrocardiographic signals. A physiological sensor is provided with the electrocardiography monitor or on the flexible backing. Memory is provided on the flexible backing and is programmed with a sampling rate to instruct the physiological sensor to obtain readings of physiological data. A battery is positioned on one end of the flexible backing to provide power to one or more of the physiological sensors and the electrocardiography monitor.

Claims (48)

1. An electrocardiography monitoring system, comprising:

a flexible backing formed of an elongated strip of stretchable material and comprising two ends, one end on each side of a midsection that is narrower than the ends;

an electrocardiographic electrode respectively affixed to and conductively exposed on a contact surface of each end of the flexible backing and configured to facilitate monitoring of electrocardiographic signals;

a flexible circuit affixed on each end to the flexible backing and comprising a pair of circuit traces each originating within one of the ends of the flexible backing and electrically coupled to one of the electrocardiographic electrodes;

at least one physiological sensor provided on the flexible backing;

memory on the flexible backing programmed with one or more sampling rates to each instruct one of the physiological sensors to obtain readings of physiological data separate from the monitoring of the electrocardiographic signals by the electrocardiographic electrodes and programmed with a duration of the sample;

a monitor, comprising:

a housing adjacently positioned to a surface of the flexible backing opposite the contact surface and comprising storage to receive the readings from one or more of the physiological sensors based the sampling rates and to receive readings based on a sensed event occurring outside the sampling rates; and

a micro-controller configured to embed data from the readings of the at least one physiological sensor into the electrocardiographic signals;

an adhesive provided only on the contact surface of each of the ends of the flexible backing, wherein the adhesive covers each of the ends of the flexible backing, leaving the narrow midsection between the ends free of the adhesive; and

a battery positioned on one end of the flexible backing to provide power to one or more of the physiological sensors and located on a surface of the flexible backing opposite the contact surface and under a bottom surface of the monitor.

2. A system according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a download station to retrieve the electrocardiographic signals and the physiological data.

3. A system according to claim 2 , wherein the electrocardiographic signals are converted into a different format via middleware on the download station.

4. A system according to claim 3 , wherein the middleware temporally matches the data from the readings of the at least one physiological sensor embedded into the electrocardiographic signals.

5. A system according to claim 1 , wherein each of the physiological sensors comprise one of a SpO2 sensor, blood pressure sensor, temperature sensor, respiratory rate sensor, glucose sensor, airflow sensor, or volumetric pressure sensor.

6. A system according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a non-conductive receptacle positioned on the flexible backing, wherein the monitor is inserted in the non-conductive receptacle.

7. A system according to claim 6 , further comprising:

a tactile button positioned on an outer surface of the electrocardiography monitor, wherein a request to one of the physiological sensors is transmitted based on a press of the tactile button.

8. A system according to claim 7 , wherein the one physiological sensor obtains readings of the physiological data based on the request.

9. A system according to claim 1 , wherein each of the physiological sensors is configured to record the physiological data based on the sampling rate.

10. An extended wear electrocardiography and physiological sensor monitor, comprising:

an electrocardiography monitor, comprising:

a sealed housing; and

electronic circuitry comprised within the sealed housing, comprising:

an externally-powered micro-controller; and

an electrocardiographic front end circuit electrically interfaced to the micro-controller and operable to sense electrocardiographic signals; and

an electrocardiography patch, comprising:

a flexible backing formed of an elongated strip of stretchable material comprising two ends, one end on each side of a midsection that is narrower than the ends;

an electrocardiographic electrode affixed to and conductively exposed on a contact surface of each end of the elongated strip and configured to facilitate monitoring of the electrocardiographic signals;

a flexible circuit affixed on each end to the elongated strip and comprising a pair of circuit traces each originating within one of the ends of the elongated strip and electrically coupled to one of the electrocardiographic electrodes;

a non-conductive receptacle formed to removably receive the electrocardiography monitor and adhered between the electrocardiography monitor and the flexible backing on one end of the elongated strip that is larger than the other end, the non-conductive receptacle comprising electrode terminals aligned to electrically interface the pair of circuit traces to the electrocardiography monitor;

at least one physiological sensor provided on the flexible backing and configured to collect physiological data that is embedded into the electrocardiographic signals;

an adhesive provided only on the contact surface of each of the ends of the elongated strip, wherein the adhesive covers each of the ends of the elongated strip, leaving the narrow midsection of the elongated strip between the ends free of the adhesive;

patch memory on the flexible backing programmed with one or more sampling rates to each instruct one of the physiological sensors to obtain readings of the physiological data separate from the monitoring of the electrocardiographic signals by the electrocardiographic electrodes and programmed with a duration of the sample, wherein the readings of the physiological data based on the sampling rates and further readings of additional physiological data based on a sensed event occurring outside the sampling rates are stored in storage on the electrocardiography monitor; and

a battery to provide power to at least one physiological sensor to obtain readings of physiological data, wherein the physiological sensor is electrically interfaced with the micro-controller over an expansion bus and the battery is positioned on one end of the flexible backing on a surface opposite the contact surface and positioned under a bottom surface of the electrocardiography monitor.

11. A system according to claim 10 , further comprising:

a download station to retrieve the electrocardiographic signals and the physiological data from the electrocardiography monitor.

12. A system according to claim 11 , wherein the electrocardiographic signals are converted into a different format via middleware on the download station.
