Abstract

A surgical instrument includes an end effector, a shaft assembly, an actuation driver, and an actuation assembly. The end effector includes first and second jaws. At least one of the first and second jaws is configured to move relative to the other of the first and second jaws to compress tissue therebetween. The shaft assembly extends proximally from the end effector. The shaft assembly includes a closure member extending along a longitudinal axis. The actuation driver is configured to configured to receive a motor output from a motor. The actuation assembly is operatively coupled with the actuation driver and the closure member. The actuation assembly includes a translating member configured to translate together with the closure member along the longitudinal axis a predetermined distance using the actuation driver such that the closure member applies a predetermined closure force to the first and second jaws corresponding to the predetermined distance.

Claims (44)

1. A surgical instrument, comprising:

(a) an end effector that includes first and second jaws, wherein at least one of the first and second jaws is configured to move relative to the other of the first and second jaws to compress tissue therebetween;

(c) an actuation driver configured to receive a motor output from a motor;

(d) an actuation assembly operatively coupled with the actuation driver and the closure member, wherein the actuation assembly includes a translating member configured to translate together with the closure member along the longitudinal axis a predetermined distance using the actuation driver such that the closure member applies a predetermined closure force to the first and second jaws corresponding to the predetermined distance; and

(e) a closure force adjusting mechanism configured to selectively adjust the predetermined closure force while compressing the tissue between the first and second jaws.

2. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the rate at which at least one of the first and second jaws is configured to move relative to the other of the first and second jaws defines a closure speed, wherein the closure speed is configured to be directly proportional to the rotational motor output prior to compressing the tissue between the first and second jaws.

3. The surgical instrument of claim 2 , wherein the closure speed is configured to at least one of linearly increase, linearly decrease, or remain constant.

4. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the closure force adjusting mechanism includes a resilient member configured to adjust the closure force between the first and second jaws when the resilient member moves from an expanded state to a compressed state.

5. The surgical instrument of claim 4 , wherein the resilient member includes a wave spring configured to adjust the closure force between the first and second jaws when the wave spring moves from an expanded state to a compressed state.

6. The surgical instrument of claim 4 , wherein the translating member and the closure force adjusting mechanism are coaxial about the longitudinal axis.

7. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the actuation driver includes a splined shaft, wherein the actuation assembly includes a first gear rotatably coupled with the splined shaft, wherein the first gear includes a first plurality of gear teeth.

8. The surgical instrument of claim 7 , wherein the actuation assembly includes a second gear that includes a central aperture and a second plurality of gear teeth, wherein at least a portion of the central aperture includes threading, wherein the translating member includes threading, wherein rotation of the threading of the second gear relative to the threading of the translating member is configured to translate the translating member to translate the closure member causing at least one of the first and second jaws to move relative to the other of the first and second jaws to compress the tissue therebetween.

9. The surgical instrument of claim 8 , wherein the actuation assembly includes a spring configured to adjust the closure force between the first and second jaws when the spring moves from an expanded state to a compressed state, wherein rotation of the translating member causes compression of the spring.

10. The surgical instrument of claim 9 , wherein the resilient member includes proximal and distal terminal ends, the actuation assembly comprising:

(i) a proximal washer disposed adjacent the proximal terminal end of the spring,

(ii) a distal washer disposed adjacent the distal terminal end of the spring, and

(iii) a tuning member disposed adjacent the proximal washer, wherein the tuning member is configured to adjust a closure distance of the translating member.

11. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the first jaw includes an ultrasonic blade and the second jaw includes a clamp arm, the surgical instrument further comprising:

(a) an acoustic waveguide in acoustic communication with the ultrasonic blade;

(b) an ultrasonic transducer assembly operatively coupled with the acoustic waveguide; and

(c) a carriage translatably coupled with the ultrasonic transducer assembly.

12. The surgical instrument of claim 11 , further comprising a translation driver configured to translate the carriage and the ultrasonic transducer assembly along the longitudinal axis so that the ultrasonic transducer assembly moves from a proximal, retracted position along the longitudinal axis to a distal, extended position along the longitudinal axis for inserting the ultrasonic blade into a patient.

13. A robotic surgical system, comprising:

(a) a patient support;

(b) a robotic arm movable relative to the patient support; and

(c) the surgical instrument of claim 1 , the surgical instrument further comprising an attachment interface configured to operatively couple with the robotic arm of the robotic surgical system, wherein the attachment interface includes a first drive input configured to receive the rotational motor output from the motor.

14. A surgical instrument comprising:

(a) an end effector that includes first and second jaws, wherein at least one of the first and second jaws is configured to move relative to the other of the first and second jaws to compress tissue therebetween;

(b) a shaft assembly extending proximally from the end effector, wherein the shaft assembly includes a closure member extending along a longitudinal axis;

(c) an actuation driver configured to receive a motor output from a motor; and

(d) an actuation assembly operatively coupled with the actuation driver and the closure member, the actuation assembly comprising:

(i) a translating member configured to translate together with the closure member a predetermined distance using the actuation driver to apply a closure force to the first and second jaws, and

(ii) a closure force adjusting mechanism configured to selectively adjust the closure force while compressing the tissue between the first and second jaws.

15. The surgical instrument of claim 14 , wherein the closure force adjusting mechanism includes a resilient member configured to adjust the closure force between the first and second jaws when the resilient member moves from an expanded state to a compressed state.
