Abstract

An ultrasonic surgical instrument including an end effector having an ultrasonic blade, a shaft assembly that defines a longitudinal axis proximally extending from the end effector and an ultrasonic transducer assembly proximally extending from an acoustic waveguide in communication with the ultrasonic blade. The ultrasonic surgical instrument also includes a housing proximally projecting from the shaft assembly such that the ultrasonic transducer assembly is positioned within the housing and a carrier moveably supports the ultrasonic transducer assembly along the longitudinal axis. The carrier collectively moves the ultrasonic transducer assembly, the acoustic waveguide, and the end effector relative to the housing from a proximal, retracted position to a distal, extended position, for inserting the ultrasonic blade into a patient. The ultrasonic surgical instrument also includes an electrical cable extending through the housing at a cable port that transmits electrical communication with the ultrasonic transducer assembly.

Claims (41)

(d) a housing proximally projecting from the shaft assembly such that the ultrasonic transducer assembly is positioned within the housing, wherein the housing includes a distal end, a proximal end, and a sidewall extending therebetween;

(e) a carrier movably supporting the ultrasonic transducer assembly along the longitudinal axis such that the ultrasonic transducer assembly, the acoustic waveguide, and the end effector are configured to collectively move relative to the housing from a proximal, retracted position on the longitudinal axis to a distal, extended position on the longitudinal axis for inserting the ultrasonic blade into a patient;

(f) an electrical cable extending through the housing at a cable port and electrically connected to the ultrasonic transducer assembly, wherein the electrical cable is configured to transmit electrical communication therealong for operating the ultrasonic transducer assembly, and wherein the cable port is positioned on the distal end of the housing; and

(g) a sterile adapter assembly secured to the housing, wherein the sterile adapter assembly includes a cable adapter connected to the electrical cable, wherein the sterile adapter assembly is secured to the distal end of the housing.

2. The ultrasonic surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the electrical cable includes a self-managing portion that is selected from the group consisting of: a helical cable and a ribbon cable.

3. The ultrasonic surgical instrument of claim 1 , further comprising a cable guide positioned in the housing and extending between the cable port and the ultrasonic transducer assembly, wherein the cable guide defines a predetermined path and receives the electrical cable along the predetermined path such that the cable guide is configured to retain the electrical cable along the predetermined path as the ultrasonic transducer assembly selectively moves from the proximal, retracted position to the distal, extended position.

4. The ultrasonic surgical instrument of claim 3 , wherein the cable guide includes a plurality of links pivotally connected in succession to define the predetermined path.

5. The ultrasonic surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the end effector further includes a clamp arm pivotally connected relative to the ultrasonic blade and configured to selectively move from an open position for receiving a tissue and a closed position for clamping tissue against the ultrasonic blade.

6. The ultrasonic surgical instrument of claim 5 , further comprising a flex circuit operatively connected to the ultrasonic transducer assembly and having a closure switch and a manual activation switch, wherein the closure switch is configured to activate the ultrasonic transducer assembly with the clamp arm in the closed position with a predetermined clamping force, and wherein the manual activation switch is configured to allow manual activation of the ultrasonic transducer assembly.

7. The ultrasonic surgical instrument of claim 6 , wherein the flex circuit is mounted to the carrier.

(e) a carrier movably supporting the ultrasonic transducer assembly along the longitudinal axis such that the ultrasonic transducer assembly, the acoustic waveguide, and the end effector are configured to collectively move relative to the housing from a proximal, retracted position on the longitudinal axis to a distal, extended position on the longitudinal axis for inserting the ultrasonic blade into a patient;

(f) an electrical cable extending through the housing at a cable port and electrically connected to the ultrasonic transducer assembly, wherein the electrical cable is configured to transmit electrical communication therealong for operating the ultrasonic transducer assembly; and

(g) a cable guide positioned in the housing and extending between the cable port and the ultrasonic transducer assembly, wherein the cable guide defines a predetermined path and receives the electrical cable along the predetermined path such that the cable guide is configured to retain the electrical cable along the predetermined path as the ultrasonic transducer assembly selectively moves from the proximal, retracted position to the distal, extended position,

wherein the cable guide includes a plurality of links pivotally connected in succession to define the predetermined path.

12. The ultrasonic surgical instrument of claim 11 , further comprising a sterile adapter assembly secured to the housing, wherein the sterile adapter assembly includes a cable adapter connected to the electrical cable.

13. An ultrasonic surgical instrument, comprising:

(a) an end effector including an ultrasonic blade and a clamp arm pivotally connected relative to the ultrasonic blade, wherein the clamp arm is configured to selectively move from an open position for receiving a tissue and a closed position for clamping tissue against the ultrasonic blade;
