Abstract

System and techniques for performing snapshot and backup copy operations for individual virtual machines in a shared storage. The system can also include one or more shared physical computer storage devices communicatively coupled to the hypervisor to store the plurality of virtual machines. A plurality of storage volumes can be provided in the one or more shared physical computer storage devices where each storage volume uniquely corresponding to one of the virtual machines. The system can issue a command to a hypervisor to perform a snapshot or backup copy operation with a particular information management policy.

Claims (52)

1. A method for managing snapshot copy operations of virtual machines, the method comprising:

according to a schedule indicated by an information management policy, instructing a first hypervisor to perform a snapshot copy operation for a first virtual machine from a plurality of virtual machines operated by the first hypervisor,

wherein the information management policy comprises one or more parameters for performing snapshot copy operations on data stored on devices associated with the information management policy,

wherein the snapshot copy operation is performed for the first virtual machine without performing the snapshot copy operation for any virtual machines from a plurality of virtual machines that are not associated with the information management policy,

wherein the snapshot copy operation results in a snapshot of a virtual storage disk that uniquely corresponds to the first virtual machine;

receiving from the first hypervisor metadata associated with the snapshot copy operation; and

storing the received metadata in a database;

wherein the received metadata is associated with the first virtual machine.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first hypervisor executes on a virtual server computing device, and wherein a virtual server agent is associated with the virtual server computing device.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the snapshot copy operation is a hardware-level snapshot.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of virtual machines that are not associated with the information management policy are operated by the first hypervisor.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises:

instructing the first hypervisor to perform a backup copy operation using the metadata for the snapshot copy operation, thereby generating a first backup copy of the first virtual machine.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method to be performed by a virtual machine.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first virtual machine is hosted by a cloud service provider.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the snapshot comprises virtual machine data stored in its native format.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the information management policy is associated with a second virtual machine that is operated by a second hypervisor.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises:

backing up the first virtual machine from the snapshot, resulting in a first backup copy of the first virtual machine; and

storing the first backup copy to one or more computing storage devices.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the first backup copy comprises virtual machine data stored in a backup format, the backup format being different from a native format of the virtual machine data.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method is performed by a virtual server agent.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the method further comprises: by the virtual server agent, backing up the first virtual machine from the snapshot, resulting in a first backup copy of the first virtual machine.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the virtual server agent is external to the first hypervisor and is implemented on hardware that is separate from hardware that executes the first hypervisor.

15. A system comprising:

one or more computing devices comprising one or more processors and computer memory, the one or more computing devices configured to:

according to a schedule indicated by an information management policy, instruct a first hypervisor to perform a snapshot copy operation for a first virtual machine from a plurality of virtual machines operated by the first hypervisor,

wherein, the snapshot copy operation is performed for the first virtual machine without performing the snapshot copy operation for any virtual machines from a plurality of virtual machines that are not associated with the information management policy,

wherein the information management policy comprises one or more parameters for performing snapshot copy operations on data stored on devices associated with the information management policy,

wherein the snapshot copy operation results in a snapshot of a virtual storage disk that uniquely corresponds to the first virtual machine;

receive, from the first hypervisor, metadata associated with the snapshot copy operation; and

store the received metadata in a database;

wherein the received metadata is associated with the first virtual machine.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the plurality of virtual machines that are not associated with the information management policy are operated by the first hypervisor.

17. The system of claim 15 , wherein the one or more computing devices is further configured to: instruct the first hypervisor to perform a backup copy operation using the metadata for the snapshot copy operation, thereby generating a first backup copy of the first virtual machine.

18. The system of claim 15 , wherein the first virtual machine is hosted by a cloud service provider.

19. The system of claim 15 , wherein the snapshot comprises virtual machine data stored in its native format.

20. The system of claim 15 , wherein the snapshot copy operation is a hardware-level snapshot.

21. The system of claim 15 , wherein the information management policy is associated with a second virtual machine that is operated by a second hypervisor.

22. The system of claim 15 , wherein the one or more computing devices is further configured to: back up the first virtual machine from the snapshot, resulting in a first backup copy of the first virtual machine; and store the first backup copy to one or more computing storage devices.

23. The system of claim 22 , wherein the first backup copy comprises virtual machine data stored in a backup format, the backup format being different from a native format of the virtual machine data.

24. The system of claim 15 , wherein the first hypervisor executes on a virtual server computing device, and wherein a virtual server agent is associated with the virtual server computing device.

25. The system of claim 24 , wherein the one or more computing devices is further configured to: by the virtual server agent, back up the first virtual machine from the snapshot, resulting in a first backup copy of the first virtual machine.

26. The system of claim 24 , wherein the virtual server agent is external to the first hypervisor and is implemented on hardware that is separate from hardware that executes the first hypervisor.

27. At least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions that when executed by one or more processors cause the one or more processors to perform a method for managing snapshot copy operations of virtual machines, the method comprising:

according to a schedule indicated by an information management policy, instructing a first hypervisor to perform a snapshot copy operation for a first virtual machine from a plurality of virtual machines operated by the first hypervisor,

wherein the information management policy comprises one or more parameters for performing snapshot copy operations on data stored on devices associated with the information management policy,

wherein the snapshot copy operation is performed for the first virtual machine without performing the snapshot copy operation for any virtual machines from a plurality of virtual machines that are not associated with the information management policy,

wherein the snapshot copy operation results in a snapshot of a virtual storage disk that uniquely corresponds to the first virtual machine;

receiving, from the first hypervisor, metadata associated with the snapshot copy operation; and

storing the received metadata in a database;

wherein the received metadata is associated with the first virtual machine.
