Abstract

Aspects of the present invention relate to methods and systems for providing a high transmission see-through view of the environment while trapping escaping light from the display system. In embodiments, a camera system is also provided that is aligned with the display system to provide images of the environment in a viewing direction of the user.

a second surface of the wearable head device, the second surface configured to:

receive ambient light,

transmit a first portion of the received ambient light in a first direction toward the eye, and

reflect a second portion of the received ambient light in a second direction different than the first direction; and

one or more sensors configured to detect the second portion of the received ambient light reflected by the second surface,

wherein the one or more processors are further configured to adjust the display data based on the detected second portion.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a polarizer disposed between the second surface and a sensor of the one or more sensors, the polarizer configured to absorb at least a portion of the ambient light.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the ambient light comprises infrared light and the one or more sensors comprise an infrared camera configured to detect the infrared light.

4. The system of claim 1 , the wearable head device comprising a transmissive display comprising a switching mirror configured to adjust an effective transmissivity and an effective reflectivity of the transmissive display, wherein the effective transmissivity and the effective reflectivity are adjusted by adjusting a rate at which the switching mirror switches between a first state and a second state.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the wearable head device comprises an adjustable partial mirror configured to adjust a reflectivity associated with the first surface, and wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

determine whether a brightness of the ambient light exceeds a threshold value,

in accordance with a determination that the brightness of the ambient light exceeds the threshold value, adjust, via the adjustable partial mirror, a reflectivity associated with the first surface, and

in accordance with a determination that the brightness of the ambient light does not exceed the threshold value, forgo adjusting, via the adjustable partial mirror, the reflectivity associated with the first surface.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

identify, based on an image detected via the one or more sensors, a first position of an object in a surrounding environment;

in response to a movement of the wearable head device, identify a second position of the object; and

adjust the display data based on a difference between the first position and the second position.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein:

the wearable head device comprises a curved display having a first curvature, and

the one or more processors are further configured to adjust the display data to compensate for an effect of the first curvature on the projected light.

8. A method comprising:

projecting light based on display data associated with an image;

reflecting, at a first surface of a wearable head device, the projected light to an eye of a user of the wearable head device;

at a second surface of the wearable head device:

receiving ambient light;

transmitting a first portion of the received ambient light in a first direction toward the eye; and

reflecting a second portion of the received ambient light in a second direction different than the first direction;

detecting, at one or more sensors, the second portion of the received ambient light reflected at the second surface; and

adjusting the display data based on the detected second portion.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

absorbing, at a polarizer disposed between the second surface and a sensor of the one or more sensors, at least a portion of the ambient light.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the ambient light comprises infrared light and the one or more sensors comprise an infrared camera configured to detect the infrared light.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein:

the wearable head device comprises a transmissive display comprising a switching mirror configured to adjust an effective transmissivity and an effective reflectivity of the transmissive display, and

the method further comprises adjusting the effective transmissivity and the effective reflectivity by adjusting a rate at which the switching mirror switches between a first state and a second state.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein:

the wearable head device comprises an adjustable partial mirror configured to adjust a reflectivity associated with the first surface, and

the method further comprises:

determining whether a brightness of the ambient light exceeds a threshold value,

in accordance with a determination that the brightness of the ambient light exceeds the threshold value, adjusting, via the adjustable partial mirror, a reflectivity associated with the first surface, and

in accordance with a determination that the brightness of the ambient light does not exceed the threshold value, forgoing adjusting, via the adjustable partial mirror, the reflectivity associated with the first surface.

13. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

identifying, based on an image detected via the one or more sensors, a first position of an object in a surrounding environment;

in response to a movement of the wearable head device, identifying a second position of the object; and

adjusting the display data based on a difference between the first position and the second position.

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein:

the wearable head device comprises a curved display having a first curvature, and

the method further comprises adjusting the display data to compensate for an effect of the first curvature on the projected light.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform a method comprising:

projecting light based on display data associated with an image;

reflecting, at a first surface of a wearable head device, the projected light to an eye of a user of the wearable head device;

at a second surface of the wearable head device:

receiving ambient light;

transmitting a first portion of the received ambient light in a first direction toward the eye; and

reflecting a second portion of the received ambient light in a second direction different than the first direction;

detecting, at one or more sensors, the second portion of the received ambient light reflected at the second surface; and

adjusting the display data based on the detected second portion.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , the method further comprising:
