Abstract

An Asset Management System and a method for managing a fleet of assets is provided. The system is capable of determining use states and high-use periods of a fleet of mobile workstations. Use states are determined by sensors resident on mobile workstations, the sensors operable to detect the occurrence of a specified event. The Asset Management System is able to interpret data sent by the sensors and determine a type of use and use state for each mobile workstation based on the data or lack of data sent by the sensors. The Asset Management System is operable to determine periods of high-use across the fleet of mobile workstations. The Asset Management System is also operable to determine a return-on-investment level of each mobile workstation in the fleet and generate a heat map based on those levels.

Claims (41)

1. A mobile workstation comprising:

a cart movable between locations in a facility;

a transceiver configured to wireless send to and wirelessly receive data from, via a wireless network, at least one remote server;

a first sensor configured to generate asset location data; and

a second sensor configured to generate asset usage data to the at least one remote server when a specified event occurs relating to a mobile workstation, wherein the second sensor includes a back current draw sensor;

wherein the transceiver wirelessly sends the asset location data and the asset usage data to the at least one remote server, and

wherein the at least one remote server performs the steps of:

storing, for a fleet of mobile workstations, asset location data, wherein the asset location data includes an actual location and an assigned location for each mobile workstation in the fleet of mobile workstations,

storing, for the fleet of mobile workstations, asset usage data, wherein the fleet of mobile workstations includes the mobile workstation,

comparing, based on the asset location data, the actual location of the mobile workstation to the assigned location of the mobile workstation,

determining, based on the asset usage data, the usage state of the mobile workstation, and

updating the usage state of the mobile workstation to in-use when the back current draw sensor detects a threshold level of back current draw by the mobile workstation.

2. The mobile workstation of claim 1 , wherein the remote server further performs the steps of providing, via a user interface, an alert that the actual location does not correspond to the assigned location of the mobile workstation where a discrepancy is found during the comparison of the actual location to the assigned location of the mobile workstation.

3. The mobile workstation of claim 2 , wherein the remote server further performs the step of providing, via a user interface, an option to update the assigned location of the mobile workstation to the actual location of the mobile workstation.

4. The mobile workstation of claim 1 , wherein the second sensor further comprises an accelerometer, and wherein the remote server further performs the steps of updating the usage state of the mobile workstation to in-transit when the accelerometer detects acceleration of the mobile workstation.

5. The mobile workstation of claim 1 , wherein the second sensor further comprises an NFC reader, and wherein the remote server further performs the steps of updating the asset usage state of the mobile workstation to at-the-ready when a user having an authorized NFC tag is within operational proximity of the NFC reader.

6. The mobile workstation of claim 1 , wherein the wireless network comprises a cloud-based system.

7. A method of managing a fleet of mobile workstations in a facility comprising:

sensing, by a first sensor residing on a mobile workstation of the fleet of mobile work stations, the location of the mobile work station;

sensing, by a second sensor resident on the mobile workstation, an occurrence of a specified event relating to the use of the mobile workstation, wherein the second sensor includes a back current draw sensor;

transmitting, by a transceiver resident on the mobile workstation and operably coupled to the sensors, via a wireless network, to a remote server a data packet, wherein the data packet contains data representing the location of the mobile work station and the occurrence of a specified event;

assigning, by the remote server, an actual location and an assigned location to the mobile workstation based on the data packet received by the server;

assigning, by the remote server, a usage state to the mobile workstation based on the data packet received by the server;

comparing, by the remote server, the actual location of the mobile workstation to the assigned location of the mobile workstation; and

updating the usage state of the mobile workstation to in-use when the back current draw sensor detects a threshold level of back current draw by the mobile workstation.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising providing, via a user interface, an alert that the actual location does not correspond to the assigned location of the mobile workstation where a discrepancy is found during the comparison of the actual location to the assigned location of the mobile workstation.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising providing, via the user interface, an option to update the assigned location of the mobile workstation to the actual location of the mobile workstation.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the second sensor comprises an accelerometer, and wherein the remote server further performs the steps of updating the usage state of the mobile workstation to in-transit when the accelerometer detects acceleration of the mobile workstation.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the second sensor comprises an NFC reader, and wherein the remote server further performs the steps of updating the asset usage state of the mobile workstation to at-the-ready when a user having an authorized NFC tag is within operational proximity of the NFC reader.

12. A non-transitory computer readable medium having stored therein instructions that, when executed by a computing device, causes the computing device to perform functions comprising:

sensing, by a first sensor residing on a mobile workstation, the location of the mobile work station in a fleet of mobile work stations;

sensing, by a second sensor resident on the mobile workstation, an occurrence of a specified event relating to the use of the mobile workstation, wherein the second sensor includes a back current draw sensor;

storing, for the fleet of mobile workstations, asset location data, wherein the asset location data includes an actual location and an assigned location for each mobile workstation in the fleet of mobile workstations;

storing, for the fleet of mobile workstations, asset usage data;

comparing, based on the asset location data, the actual location of the mobile workstation to the assigned location of the mobile workstation; and

determining, based on the asset usage data, the usage state of the mobile workstation; and

updating the usage state of the mobile workstation to in-use when the back current draw sensor detects a threshold level of back current draw by the mobile workstation.

13. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 12 , further comprising providing, via a user interface, an alert that the actual location does not correspond to the assigned location of the mobile workstation where a discrepancy is found during the comparison of the actual location to the assigned location of the mobile workstation.

14. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 13 , further comprising providing, via a user interface, an option to update the assigned location of the mobile workstation to the actual location of the mobile workstation.

15. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the second sensor comprises an accelerometer, further comprising updating the usage state of the mobile workstation to in-transit when the accelerometer detects acceleration of the mobile workstation.

16. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the second sensor comprises an NFC reader, further comprising updating the usage state of the mobile workstation to at-the-ready when a user having an authorized NFC tag is within operational proximity of the NFC reader.
