Abstract

A pyrolysis method and system are provided that enhances the production of alkanes and minimizes the production of aromatics in the resulting pyrolysis oil. More particularly, the disclosed pyrolysis method and system may be configured to enhance the production of alkanes due to the use of certain pyrolysis catalysts and more intense pyrolysis conditions.

Claims (25)

1 . A method of making a pyrolysis oil, said method comprising:

(a) introducing a pyrolysis feed into a pyrolysis unit, wherein said pyrolysis feed comprises at least one recycled waste, wherein said recycled waste comprises not more than 1 weight percent of polyvinyl chloride and/or polyethylene terephthalate; and

(b) pyrolyzing at least a portion of said pyrolysis feed in the presence of an acidic catalyst at a temperature of 380° C. to 550° C. to thereby form a pyrolysis effluent comprising a pyrolysis oil, wherein said pyrolysis oil

(i) comprises an aromatic content of 5 wt % to less than 20 wt %; and

(ii) comprises a combined paraffin and olefin content of at least 50 wt %; and

(iii) exhibits a density at 15° C. of at least 0.6 g/cm 3 ; wherein said pyrolysis oil is sent to a cracking furnace to produce olefins; where said pyrolysis oil has not be subjected to additional treatments chosen from hydrotreatment and/or hydrogenation; wherein said pyrolysis oil has a C 8 + content of at least 15 weight percent, based on the total weight of said pyrolysis oil; and wherein said olefins comprises a ethylene and/or propylene.

2 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein said recycled waste comprises post-consumer waste and/or post-industrial waste.

3 . The method according to claim 2 , wherein said post-consumer waste comprises a waste plastic, a waste rubber, a textile, modified cellulose, wet-laid products, or combinations thereof.

4 . The method according to claim 3 , wherein said pyrolysis feed comprises at least 30 wt % of at least one post-consumer wastes.

5 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein said recycled waste comprises at least one recycled waste plastic.

6 . The method according to claim 5 , wherein said pyrolysis feed comprises at least 30 wt % of at least one recycled waste plastic.

7 . The method according to claim 5 , wherein said pyrolysis feed comprises at least 30 wt % of polyethylene and/or polypropylene.

8 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein said pyrolysis effluent comprises at least 40 wt % and/or less than 99 wt % of said pyrolysis oil.

9 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein said pyrolysis oil comprises an aromatic content of less than 15 wt %.

10 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein said pyrolysis oil comprises a combined paraffin and olefin content of at least 55 wt % and/or not more than 99 wt %.

11 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein said pyrolysis oil comprises a C6-C12 hydrocarbon content of at least 10 wt % and/or less than 95 wt %.

12 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein said pyrolysis oil comprises a C13-C23 hydrocarbon content of at least 1 wt % and/or less than 80 wt %.

13 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein said pyrolysis oil comprises a C24+ hydrocarbon content of at least 1 wt % and/or less than 15 wt %.

14 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein said pyrolyzing of step (b) occurs at a temperature of at least 250° C.

The method according to claim 1 , wherein said pyrolyzing of step (b) occurs in a pyrolysis unit, wherein said pyrolysis unit comprises a fluidized bed reactor, a transported bed reactor, an ablative (vortex) reactor, an extruder reactor, a microwave reactor, a fixed bed reactor, a vacuum reactor, an autoclave reactor, a rotary kiln, or a tubular reactor.

16 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein said pyrolyzing of step (b) occurs at a residence of at least 0.1 seconds and less than 10 seconds.

17 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein said pyrolysis catalyst comprises a heterogeneous catalyst comprising a metal or metal oxide supported on carbon, a basic oxide, or combinations thereof.

18 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein said pyrolysis catalyst comprises a homogeneous catalyst.

19 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein said pyrolysis oil exhibits an API gravity at 15° C. of at least 28 and/or less than 50.

20 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein said pyrolysis oil comprises a weight ratio of C6-C12 hydrocarbons to C13-C23 hydrocarbons of at least 1:1 and/or less than 20:1.
