Abstract

A surgical instrument comprising an end effector including a first jaw and a second jaw rotatable relative to the first jaw is disclosed. One or both of the first jaw and the second jaw comprise an arrangement for maintaining the alignment between the first jaw and the second jaw. The alignment arrangement can also provide tactile feedback to the operator of the surgical instrument that the surgical instrument is reaching a fully-closed position during a closure stroke.

Claims (21)

1. A method for operating a surgical instrument, comprising:

actuating an articulation drive of the surgical instrument to articulate an end effector of the surgical instrument when the end effector is in an open configuration, wherein said articulation drive comprises an illuminatable articulation actuator;

actuating a closure drive to place the end effector in a partially-clamped configuration;

actuating the articulation drive to articulate the end effector when the end effector is in the partially-clamped configuration;

actuating the closure drive beyond the partially-clamped configuration and less than a fully-clamped configuration to deactivate the articulation drive, wherein said deactivation is indicated by the illuminatable articulation actuator of the surgical instrument; and

actuating the closure drive to place the end effector in the fully-clamped configuration.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the end effector comprises a first jaw and a second jaw, wherein the second jaw is rotatable relative to the first jaw between an open position in the open configuration, a partially-clamped position in the partially-clamped configuration, and a fully-clamped position in the fully-clamped configuration.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the partially-clamped position comprises a 50% clamped position.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the partially-clamped position comprises a 70% clamped position.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein the partially-clamped position comprises a 30% clamped position.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein said method further comprises illuminating the articulation actuator when the end effector is moved beyond the partially-clamped configuration to indicate that the articulation drive has been deactivated.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein said method further comprises deilluminating the articulation actuator when the end effector is moved beyond the partially-clamped configuration to indicate that the articulation drive has been deactivated.

8. A method for operating a surgical instrument, comprising:

articulating an end effector of the surgical instrument using an articulation drive when the end effector is in an open configuration;

partially closing the end effector into a partially-closed configuration;

articulating the end effector via the articulation drive when the end effector is in the partially-closed configuration;

closing the end effector beyond the partially-closed configuration and less than a fully closed configuration;

deactivating the articulation drive based on the end effector closing beyond the partially-closed configuration; and

fully closing the end effector into the fully closed configuration.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the articulation drive comprises an articulation actuator, and wherein said method further comprises illuminating the articulation actuator when the end effector is moved beyond the partially-closed configuration to indicate that the articulation drive has been deactivated.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the articulation drive comprises an illuminated articulation actuator, and wherein said method further comprises deilluminating the articulation actuator when the end effector is moved beyond the partially-closed configuration to indicate that the articulation drive has been deactivated.
