Abstract

Fall detection and reporting technology, in which output from at least one sensor configured to sense, in a room of a building, activity associated with a patient falling is monitored and a determination is made to capture one or more images of the room based on the monitoring. An image of the room is captured with a camera positioned to include the patient within a field of view of the camera and the captured image of the room is analyzed to detect a state of the patient at a time of capturing the image. A potential fall event for the patient is determined based on the detected state of the patient and a message indicating the potential fall event for the patient is sent based on the determination of the potential fall event for the patient. Techniques are also described for fall detection and reporting using an on-body sensing device.

Claims (64)

1. An on-body user interface device comprising:

at least one sensor;

a processor;

memory;

a battery; and

a user interface configured to receive user input,

wherein the memory stores instructions, which when executed by the processor, causes the processor to perform operations comprising:

accessing sensor data captured by the at least one sensor of the on-body user interface device;

detecting a potential fall event based on the accessed sensor data captured by the at least one sensor of the on-body user interface device;

based on detection of the potential fall event:

prompting a user for cancellation of the potential fall event, and

monitoring, for a set period of inactivity, output from the at least one sensor of the on-body user interface device; and

based on a determination that the user interface has not received user input cancelling the potential fall event and the set period of inactivity has passed without detecting sensed activity from the at least one sensor of the on-body user interface device, generating a fall signal.

2. The on-body user interface device of claim 1 :

wherein the at least one sensor of the on-body user interface device is configured to capture human motion; and

wherein detecting the potential fall event based on the accessed sensor data captured by the at least one sensor of the on-body user interface device comprises detecting motion characteristics indicative of a fall based on the human motion captured by the at least one sensor of the on-body user interface device.

3. The on-body user interface device of claim 1 :

wherein the at least one sensor of the on-body user interface device is configured to sense impact; and

wherein detecting the potential fall event based on the accessed sensor data captured by the at least one sensor of the on-body user interface device comprises:

determining an impact metric based on the impact sensed by the at least one sensor of the on-body user interface device,

comparing the impact metric to a threshold,

based on the comparison, determining that the impact metric meets the threshold, and

detecting the potential fall event based on the determination that the impact metric meets the threshold.

4. The on-body user interface device of claim 1 , wherein detecting the potential fall event based on the accessed sensor data captured by the at least one sensor of the on-body user interface device comprises:

comparing the accessed sensor data captured by the at least one sensor of the on-body user interface device to a fall-related signature,

based on the comparison, determining that the accessed sensor data matches the fall-related signature by a minimum threshold, and

detecting the potential fall event based on the determination that the accessed sensor data matches the fall-related signature by the minimum threshold.

5. The on-body user interface device of claim 1 , wherein prompting the user for cancellation of the potential fall event comprises alerting the user with an audible tone.

6. The on-body user interface device of claim 1 , wherein prompting the user for cancellation of the potential fall event comprises alerting the user with a vibration.

7. The on-body user interface device of claim 1 , wherein prompting the user for cancellation of the potential fall event comprises alerting the user with a visual indicator on the user interface of the on-body user interface device.

8. The on-body user interface device of claim 1 , wherein generating the fall signal comprises sending, to a remote caregiver or monitoring station, the fall signal to alert the remote caregiver or the monitoring station to provide assistance to the user who experienced the potential fall event.

9. The on-body user interface device of claim 1 , wherein the operations comprise measuring human motion and activity, detecting specific events including falls, walking, running, and sleeping, and communicating to the user reminders and notifications.

10. The on-body user interface device of claim 1 , wherein detecting the potential fall event based on the accessed sensor data captured by the at least one sensor of the on-body user interface device comprises:

calculating an orientation change based on the accessed sensor data captured by the at least one sensor of the on-body user interface device; and

detecting the potential fall event based on the calculated orientation change.

11. A method comprising:

accessing sensor data captured by at least one sensor of an on-body user interface device;

detecting a potential fall event based on the accessed sensor data captured by the at least one sensor of the on-body user interface device;

based on detection of the potential fall event:

prompting a user for cancellation of the potential fall event, and

monitoring, for a set period of inactivity, output from the at least one sensor of the on-body user interface device; and

based on a determination that a user interface of the on-body user interface device has not received user input cancelling the potential fall event and the set period of inactivity has passed without detecting sensed activity from the at least one sensor of the on-body user interface device, generating a fall signal.

12. The method of claim 11 :

wherein the at least one sensor of the on-body user interface device is configured to capture human motion; and

wherein detecting the potential fall event based on the accessed sensor data captured by the at least one sensor of the on-body user interface device comprises detecting motion characteristics indicative of a fall based on the human motion captured by the at least one sensor of the on-body user interface device.

13. The method of claim 1 :

wherein the at least one sensor of the on-body user interface device is configured to sense impact; and

wherein detecting the potential fall event based on the accessed sensor data captured by the at least one sensor of the on-body user interface device comprises:

determining an impact metric based on the impact sensed by the at least one sensor of the on-body user interface device,

comparing the impact metric to a threshold,

based on the comparison, determining that the impact metric meets the threshold, and

detecting the potential fall event based on the determination that the impact metric meets the threshold.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein detecting the potential fall event based on the accessed sensor data captured by the at least one sensor of the on-body user interface device comprises:

comparing the accessed sensor data captured by the at least one sensor of the on-body user interface device to a fall-related signature,

based on the comparison, determining that the accessed sensor data matches the fall-related signature by a minimum threshold, and

detecting the potential fall event based on the determination that the accessed sensor data matches the fall-related signature by the minimum threshold.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein prompting the user for cancellation of the potential fall event comprises alerting the user with an audible tone.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein prompting the user for cancellation of the potential fall event comprises alerting the user with a vibration.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein prompting the user for cancellation of the potential fall event comprises alerting the user with a visual indicator on the user interface of the on-body user interface device.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein generating the fall signal comprises sending, to a remote caregiver or monitoring station, the fall signal to alert the remote caregiver or the monitoring station to provide assistance to the user who experienced the potential fall event.

19. The method of claim 11 , further comprises measuring human motion and activity, detecting specific events including falls, walking, running, and sleeping, and communicating to the user reminders and notifications.

20. The method of claim 11 , wherein detecting the potential fall event based on the accessed sensor data captured by the at least one sensor of the on-body user interface device comprises:

calculating an orientation change based on the accessed sensor data captured by the at least one sensor of the on-body user interface device; and

detecting the potential fall event based on the calculated orientation change.
