Abstract

An ion chamber has a chamber having an interior volume. There is a first electrode and a second electrode in the chamber and separated by a gap. A collector electrode is positioned between the first electrode and the second electrode. The collector electrode is shaped to occlude a portion of the first electrode from the second electrode.

Claims (29)

1. An ion chamber comprising:

a chamber having an interior volume;

a ring electrode inside the chamber;

center electrodes; and

a non-transitory, machine-readable medium storing instructions which, when executed by at least one programmable processor, cause the at least one programmable processor to perform operations comprising:

measuring current received at the center electrodes;

measuring current received at the ring electrode; and

calculating a beam energy of a radiation beam based at least on a ratio of the current received at the center electrodes and the current received at the ring electrode.

2. The ion chamber of claim 1 , wherein the ring electrode is a continuous unsegmented ring electrode.

3. The ion chamber of claim 2 , wherein the center electrodes are plates.

4. The ion chamber of claim 2 , the center electrodes positioned in a symmetrical pattern around an axis of the ion chamber.

5. The ion chamber of claim 4 , wherein the center electrodes comprises four annular segments positioned in a single collecting plane covering an annular area parallel to a first electrode and a second electrode.

6. The ion chamber of claim 4 , wherein the continuous unsegmented ring electrode is an annular ring electrode positioned to cover an annular area parallel to a first electrode and a second electrode.

7. The ion chamber of claim 4 , wherein the center electrodes are rectangular plates.

8. The ion chamber of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of center electrodes further comprise four wedge plates positioned in a single collecting plane covering a circular area centered on an axis of the ion chamber, wherein the four wedge plates are separated from each other by gaps with an area substantially smaller than the circular area.

9. The ion chamber of claim 2 , wherein the center electrodes are inside the continuous unsegmented ring electrode.

10. The ion chamber of claim 2 , wherein the continuous unsegmented ring electrode is located near a periphery of the chamber.

11. The ion chamber of claim 1 , further comprising an entrance window with a thickness sufficient to stop nearly all electrons from an upstream linear accelerator.

12. The ion chamber of claim 1 , wherein the ring electrode comprises a plurality of segments.

13. A computer program product comprising a non-transitory, machine-readable medium storing instructions which, when executed by at least one programmable processor, cause the at least one programmable processor to perform operations comprising:

measuring current received at center electrodes of an ion chamber;

measuring current received at a ring electrode inside a chamber of the ion chamber; and

calculating a beam energy of a radiation beam based at least on a ratio of the current received at the center electrodes and the current received at the ring electrode.

14. The computer program product of claim 13 , further comprising:

monitoring, with the ion chamber, the beam energy during operation of a linear accelerator that generates the radiation beam directed through the ion chamber; and

ceasing operation of the linear accelerator when the beam energy is outside an allowable range.

15. The computer program product of claim 13 , the operations further comprising:

monitoring, with the ion chamber, the beam energy during operation of a linear accelerator that generates the radiation beam directed through the ion chamber; and

generating an alert when the beam energy is outside an allowable range.
