Abstract

Systems and methods for managing graphic design using metadata relationships are described. According to certain aspects, an electronic device may display a visual design including a set of design elements, each of which may be contained within a corresponding container. The electronic device may receive a selection to spatially adjust a design element, and may determine a modification to the design element based an element behavior of the design element and/or a container behavior of the corresponding container. The electronic device may display, in the user interface, the design element reflecting the modification.

Claims (58)

1. A computer-implemented method of modifying a visual design comprising a design element, the method comprising:

displaying, in a user interface, the visual design comprising the design element and having associated a container in which the design element is contained, wherein the design element (i) comprises a plurality of visual elements and (ii) has an element behavior, and the container has a container behavior that either sheds or nudges at least a portion of the plurality of visual elements;

receiving, via the user interface, a selection to spatially adjust the container;

determining, by a processor based on the selection to spatially adjust the container, to either shed or nudge at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements; and

displaying, in the user interface, the design element (i) within the container that was spatially adjusted, and (ii) reflecting at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements as either shedded or nudged.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , wherein the container that was spatially adjusted has an edge, and wherein identifying at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements comprises:

identifying at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements, each of which is located on the edge of the container that was spatially adjusted.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , wherein the container that was spatially adjusted has at least two edges, and wherein identifying at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements comprises:

identifying at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements, each of which is located on an edge of the at least two edges of the container that was spatially adjusted.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein determining to either shed or nudge at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements comprises:

determining to shed at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements; and wherein displaying the design element comprises:

displaying, in the user interface, the design element (i) within the container that was spatially adjusted, and (ii) reflecting at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements as shedded.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein determining to either shed or nudge at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements comprises:

determining to nudge at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements; and wherein displaying the first design element comprises:

displaying, in the user interface, the design element (i) within the container that was spatially adjusted, and (ii) reflecting at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements as nudged.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein determining to either shed or nudge at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements comprises:

determining to partially shed at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements; and wherein displaying the design element comprises:

displaying, in the user interface, the design element (i) within the container that was spatially adjusted, and (ii) reflecting at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements as partially shedded.

8. An electronic device for modifying a visual design comprising a design element, comprising:

a user interface for displaying content;

a memory storing non-transitory computer executable instructions; and

a processor interfacing with the user interface and the memory, wherein the processor is configured to execute the non-transitory computer executable instructions to cause the processor to:

cause the user interface to display the visual design comprising the design element and having associated a container in which the design element is contained, wherein the design element (i) comprises a plurality of visual elements and (ii) has an element behavior, and the container has a container behavior that either sheds or nudges at least a portion of the plurality of visual elements,

receive, via the user interface, a selection to spatially adjust the container,

determine, based on the selection to spatially adjust the container, to either shed or nudge at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements, and

cause the user interface to display the design element (i) within the container that was spatially adjusted, and (ii) reflecting at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements as either shedded or nudged.

9. The electronic device of claim 8 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

identify at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements.

10. The electronic device of claim 9 , wherein the container that was spatially adjusted has an edge, and wherein to identify at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements, the processor is configured to:

identify at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements, each of which is located on the edge of the container that was spatially adjusted.

11. The electronic device of claim 9 , wherein the container that was spatially adjusted has at least two edges, and wherein to identify at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements, the processor is configured to:

identify at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements, each of which is located on an edge of the at least two edges of the container that was spatially adjusted.

12. The electronic device of claim 8 , wherein the processor determines to shed at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements;

and wherein the user interface displays the design element (i) within the container that was spatially adjusted, and (ii) reflecting at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements as shedded.

13. The electronic device of claim 8 , wherein the processor determines to nudge at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements;

and wherein the user interface displays the design element (i) within the container that was spatially adjusted, and (ii) reflecting at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements as nudged.

14. The electronic device of claim 8 , wherein the processor determines to partially shed at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements;

and wherein the user interface displays the design element (i) within the container that was spatially adjusted, and (ii) reflecting at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements as partially shedded.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium configured to store instructions executable by a computer processor, the instructions comprising:

instructions for displaying, in a user interface, a visual design comprising a design element and having associated a container in which the design element is contained, wherein the design element (i) comprises a plurality of visual elements and (ii) has an element behavior, and the container has a container behavior that either sheds or nudges at least a portion of the plurality of visual elements;

instructions for receiving, via the user interface, a selection to spatially adjust the container;

instructions for determining, based on the selection to spatially adjust the container, to either shed or nudge at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements; and

instructions for displaying, in the user interface, the design element (i) within the container that was spatially adjusted, and (ii) reflecting at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements as either shedded or nudged.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the instructions further comprise:

instructions for identifying at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the container that was spatially adjusted has an edge, and wherein the instructions for identifying at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements comprise:

instructions for identifying at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements, each of which is located on the edge of the container that was spatially adjusted.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the container that was spatially adjusted has at least two edges, and wherein the instructions for identifying at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements comprise:

instructions for identifying at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements, each of which is located on an edge of the at least two edges of the container that was spatially adjusted.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the instructions for determining to either shed or nudge at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements comprise:

instructions for determining to shed at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements; and wherein the instructions for displaying the design element comprise:

instructions for displaying, in the user interface, the design element (i) within the container that was spatially adjusted, and (ii) reflecting at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements as shedded.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the instructions for determining to either shed or nudge at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements comprise:

instructions for determining to nudge at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements;

and wherein the instructions for displaying the first design element comprise:

instructions for displaying, in the user interface, the design element (i) within the container that was spatially adjusted, and (ii) reflecting at least the portion of the plurality of visual elements as nudged.
