Abstract

A medical instrument comprising: (A) a first joint comprising a first member and a second member, the first member configured to be repositionable with respect to the second member in an X-Y plane; (B) a second joint operatively coupled to the first joint, the second joint comprising a third member and a fourth member, the third member configured to be repositionable with respect to the fourth member in a Y-Z plane perpendicular to the X-Y plane; and, (C) a controller operatively coupled to the first joint and the second joint, the controller including a first control configured to direct repositioning of at least one of the first member and the second member, and a second control configured to direct repositioning of at least one of the third member and the fourth member.

Claims (10)

1. A method of operating a medical instrument comprising:

squeezing a handle of a controller of an occlusion clip applier to cause an occlusion clip to be repositioned from a closed position to an open position;

releasing the handle of the controller to cause the occlusion clip to be repositioned from the open position to the closed position clamping a left atrial appendage;

removing a stem from the controller to disconnect the occlusion clip from the occlusion clip applier.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

repositioning a button of the controller from a first position to a second position to unlock assemblies and allowing for pitch and yaw adjustment of the occlusion clip mounted to an end effector of the occlusion clip applier;

repositioning the button of the controller from the second position to the first position to lock the assemblies and discontinue pitch and yaw adjustment of the occlusion clip mounted to the end effector.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein:

repositioning the button of the controller from the first position to the second position includes using a thumb to depress the button and overcome a spring bias resisting depressing of the button;

repositioning the button of the controller from the second position to the first position includes repositioning the thumb to allow the spring bias to facilitate repositioning of the button from the second position to the first position.
