Abstract

Luminaires are described herein employing waveguides and associated architectures for dynamic alteration of illuminance distribution patterns. The waveguide includes a light extraction component. The waveguide transmits light from a light source to the light extraction component by total internal reflection (TIR). The light extraction component includes one or more reversibly moveable surfaces for altering illuminance distribution patterns of the luminaire in response to one or more forces applied to the light extraction component by a force application assembly of the luminaire.

Claims (29)

1. A luminaire comprising:

a waveguide body;

a light extraction component on a surface of the waveguide body;

a plurality of light sources arranged along an edge of the waveguide body at different angular positions relative to the waveguide body such that light emitted from each of the plurality of light sources provides a distribution pattern with an elongated lobe-shaped beam in a distinct azimuthal direction from the surface of the waveguide body; and

control circuitry configured to alter an illuminance distribution pattern of the luminaire by selecting one of a plurality of activation patterns of the plurality of light sources.

2. The luminaire of claim 1 , wherein the light extraction component comprises light extraction elements that are arranged in an array of polygonal geometry on the waveguide body.

3. The luminaire of claim 2 , wherein a spacing of the plurality of light sources matches the polygonal geometry of the array.

4. The luminaire of claim 3 , wherein the polygonal array is a hexagonal array and the spacing of the plurality of light sources forms a hexagon.

5. The luminaire of claim 1 wherein the illuminance distribution pattern comprises a combined azimuthal component that is steered by the different angular positions of the plurality of light sources relative to the waveguide body and the selected one of the plurality of activation patterns of the plurality of light sources.

6. The luminaire of claim 1 further comprising a programmable device for selecting the one of the plurality of activation patterns of the plurality of light sources.

7. The luminaire of claim 6 wherein the programmable device stores the plurality of activation patterns.

8. The luminaire of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of light sources comprises a plurality of LEDs.

9. The luminaire of claim 1 , wherein the edge of the waveguide body has a polygonal shape comprising a plurality of sides and the plurality of light sources are arranged along at least two sides of the plurality of sides.

10. The luminaire of claim 1 , wherein the edge of the waveguide body has a first shape and the plurality of light sources are spaced in a format having a second shape, the first shape being different than the second shape.

11. A luminaire comprising:

a waveguide body having an edge and a plurality of light extraction elements arranged on a surface of the waveguide body, the surface being disposed substantially perpendicular to the edge;

a plurality of light sources each comprising a bank of LEDs, the plurality of light sources arranged along the edge of the waveguide body, wherein the plurality of light sources have different angular positions relative to the waveguide body and each of the plurality of light sources is configured to provide a distribution pattern with an elongated lobe-shaped beam in a distinct azimuthal direction from the surface of the waveguide body; and

a programmable device controlling an illuminance distribution pattern of the luminaire by selecting one of a plurality of activation patterns of the plurality of light sources.

12. The luminaire of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of light extraction elements are arranged in an array of polygonal geometry on the waveguide body.

13. The luminaire of claim 12 , wherein a spacing of the plurality of light sources matches the polygonal geometry of the array.

14. The luminaire of claim 11 wherein the illuminance distribution pattern comprises a combined azimuthal component that is steered by a combination of the different angular positions of the plurality of light sources relative to the waveguide body and the one of the plurality of activation patterns of the plurality of light sources.

15. The luminaire of claim 11 wherein the programmable device stores the plurality of activation patterns.

16. The luminaire of claim 11 , wherein the edge of the waveguide body has a polygonal shape comprising a plurality of sides and the plurality of light sources are arranged along at least two sides of the plurality of sides.

17. The luminaire of claim 11 , wherein the edge of the waveguide body has a first shape and the plurality of light sources are spaced in a format having a second shape, the first shape being different than the second shape.

18. A method of controlling a luminaire having a waveguide body and light extraction component on a surface of the waveguide body, the method comprising:

arranging a plurality of light sources along an edge of the waveguide body in different angular positions relative to the waveguide body such that each of the plurality of light sources provides a distribution pattern with an elongated lobe-shaped beam in a distinct azimuthal direction from the surface of the waveguide body; and

selecting one of a plurality of activation patterns of the plurality of light sources to control an illuminance distribution pattern of the luminaire.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein selecting the one of the plurality of activation patterns of the plurality of light sources comprises receiving a user input.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein the selecting one of the plurality of activation patterns of the plurality of light sources comprises illuminating selected ones of the plurality of light sources.
