Abstract

Systems and methods herein are directed to an endoscopic device with a drip flange, including the assembly and use of the endoscopic device. The endoscopic device with a drip flange may be positioned to abut an aperture into an operative cavity and inserted through the aperture. An endoscopic procedure may be performed, during which fluid moves along an outside surface of the elongate shaft, the fluid moving from the distal end toward the proximal end, and where the fluid is directed to a drip flange coupled to the outside surface of the elongate shaft between the distal tip and a proximal end of the elongate shaft.

Claims (28)

1. A method of performing a surgical procedure, comprising:

installing a drip flange on an outside surface of an elongated shaft of an endoscopic device;

connecting the drip flange to a tubing;

positioning a distal tip of the endoscopic device to abut an aperture into an operative cavity, the endoscopic device defines a central axis, a proximal end, a distal end, the distal tip, and the elongate shaft extending from the distal tip towards the proximal end;

inserting the distal tip of the endoscopic device through the aperture and into the operative cavity;

performing an endoscopic procedure within the operative cavity wherein, during the endoscopic procedure, fluid moves proximally from the aperture along an outside surface of the elongate shaft to the drip flange and into the tubing.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein, during the endoscopic procedure, the fluid moves to a drip edge defined by an outer edge of the drip flange.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the drip flange defines a conical frustum shape that defines a central axis, a proximal end, and a distal end, wherein an outer diameter of the proximal end is larger than an outer diameter of the endoscopic device.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the drip flange defines a disc shape that defines a central axis, a proximal end, and a distal end, wherein an outer diameter of the proximal end of the drip flange is larger than an outer diameter of the endoscopic device.

The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing fluid flow through an inflow channel of the endoscopic device to the operative cavity during a time period comprising at least one selected from the group consisting of: prior to inserting the distal tip through the aperture; subsequent to inserting the distal tip through the aperture; and during the performing the endoscopic procedure.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising disposing the endoscopic device at an angle wherein the distal end of the endoscopic device is higher than the proximal end with respect to a local gravity.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, prior to inserting the distal tip, telescoping an endoscope into a sheath along the central axis to form the endoscopic device.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein installing the drip flange includes telescoping the drip flange over the endoscopic device along the central axis.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the endoscopic device comprises a sheath and wherein installing the drip flange includes telescoping the sheath through the drip flange.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the endoscopic device comprises an endoscope and wherein installing the drip flange includes telescoping the drip flange over the endoscope along the central axis.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fluid moving to the drip flange and into the tubing is further moved to a receptacle connected to the tubing.

12. A method of performing a surgical procedure, comprising:

assembling a drip flange on an endoscopic device;

performing an endoscopic procedure using the endoscopic device, wherein, during the endoscopic procedure, fluid moves proximally along an outside surface of the endoscopic device and is collected at the drip flange; and

monitoring fluid flow based at least in part on the collected fluid.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein assembling the drip flange on the endoscopic device includes telescoping an endoscope into a sheath to form the endoscopic device, and telescoping the drip flange over the endoscopic device.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein assembling the drip flange on the endoscopic device includes telescoping an endoscope into a sheath having the drip flange formed monolithically on the sheath.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein assembling the drip flange on the endoscopic device includes telescoping an endoscope through a sheath having the drip flange permanently or removably coupled to the sheath.

16. The method of claim 12 , wherein assembling the drip flange on the endoscopic device includes telescoping the drip flange over a sheath.

17. The method of claim 12 , wherein assembling the drip flange on the endoscopic device includes telescoping the drip flange over an endoscope.

18. The method of claim 12 , wherein the drip flange defines a disc shape that defines a central axis, a proximal end, and a distal end, and wherein an outer diameter of the proximal end of the drip flange is larger than an outer diameter of the endoscopic device.

19. The method of claim 12 , wherein the fluid collected at the drip flange is transported via a tubing to enable the monitoring of fluid flow based at least in part on the collected fluid.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the tubing directs the fluid to a receptacle to enable the monitoring of fluid flow based at least in part on the collected fluid.
