Abstract

A device and a method for increasing or restoring a flow in a body lumen are provided. The device and the method may treat conditions related to a stroke, such as an ischemic stroke, by removing an occlusion from a blood vessel and/or reopen a blood vessel. The device may comprise a tubing compartment, a central wire, and an engaging compartment. The engaging compartment may comprise a distal engaging element and a proximal engaging element. A clot or occlusion present in the body lumen such as an artery may be engaged in and/or between the distal and proximal engaging elements. Further, the positions of one or both of the engaging elements and the distance therebetween can be adjusted to ensure the engagement of the clot or occlusion.

Claims (35)

1. A device for use to remove an occlusion in a blood vessel, the device comprising:

a pusher tubing;

a central wire;

a proximal engaging element, the proximal engaging element being open at a distal end, the proximal engaging element configured to slide along the central wire;

a distal engaging element, the distal engaging element being closed at a proximal end, the distal engaging element comprising an angled lateral side and a parallel lateral side relative to a longitudinal axis of the distal engaging element, the parallel lateral side being distal to the angled lateral side, the proximal end of the distal engaging element fixed at a distal end of the central wire; and

a microcatheter configured to expose the proximal and distal engaging elements upon unsheathing from the microcatheter;

the proximal and distal engaging elements configured to hold the occlusion by:

frictionally engaging the occlusion between the parallel lateral side of the distal engaging element and a wall of the blood vessel; and

grabbing the occlusion between the proximal engaging element and the distal engaging element.

2. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the distal engaging element is configured to be positioned in the blood vessel such that the proximal end of the distal engaging element is distal to a proximal end of the occlusion and proximal to a distal end of the occlusion.

3. The device according to claim 1 , wherein a location of the distal engaging element in the blood vessel is controllable by movement of the central wire.

4. The device according to claim 1 , wherein a position of the distal engaging element relative to the proximal engaging element is controllable by movement of the central wire.

5. The device according to claim 1 , further comprising a handle configured to lock relative positions of the distal and proximal engaging elements once the occlusion is held by the device.

6. The device according to claim 1 , wherein a diameter of the distal engaging element is different from a diameter of the proximal engaging element.

The device according to claim 1 , wherein the pusher tubing forms a tubing compartment with a connecting tubing, the tubing compartment extending to a proximal end of the device, the proximal engaging element fixed with the tubing compartment such that a location of the proximal engaging element in the blood vessel is controllable by movement of the tubing compartment.

8. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the central wire is configured to be pulled, or the pusher tube is configured to be pushed, independently or simultaneously, to shorten a distance between the proximal engaging element and the distal engaging element.

9. A device for use to remove an occlusion in a blood vessel, the device comprising:

a pusher tubing;

a central wire;

a proximal engaging element, the proximal engaging element being open at a distal end; and

a distal engaging element, the distal engaging element being closed at a proximal end, the distal engaging element comprising an angled lateral side and a parallel lateral side relative to a longitudinal axis of the distal engaging element, the parallel lateral side being distal to the angled lateral side;

the proximal and distal engaging elements configured to hold the occlusion by:

frictionally engaging the occlusion between the parallel lateral side of the distal engaging element and a wall of the blood vessel; and

grabbing the occlusion between the proximal engaging element and the distal engaging element.

10. The device according to claim 9 , wherein the distal engaging element is configured to be positioned in the blood vessel such that the proximal end of the distal engaging element is distal to a proximal end of the occlusion and proximal to a distal end of the occlusion.

11. The device according to claim 9 , wherein the proximal end of the distal engaging element is fixed at a distal end of the central wire.

12. The device according to claim 11 , wherein a location of the distal engaging element in the blood vessel is controllable by movement of the central wire.

13. The device according to claim 11 , wherein a position of the distal engaging element relative to the proximal engaging element is controllable by movement of the central wire.

14. The device according to claim 11 , further comprising a handle, wherein the central wire extends from the proximal end of the distal engaging element to the handle.

15. The device according to claim 14 , wherein the handle is configured to lock relative positions of the distal and proximal engaging elements once the occlusion is held by the device.

16. The device according to claim 9 , wherein a diameter of the distal engaging element is different from a diameter of the proximal engaging element.

17. The device according to claim 9 , wherein the proximal engaging element is configured to slide along the central wire.

18. The device according to claim 9 , wherein the pusher tubing forms a tubing compartment with a connecting tubing, the tubing compartment extending to a proximal end of the device, the proximal engaging element fixed with the tubing compartment such that a location of the proximal engaging element in the blood vessel is controllable by movement of the tubing compartment.

19. The device according to claim 9 , further comprising a microcatheter, wherein the microcatheter is configured to expose the proximal and distal engaging elements upon unsheathing from the microcatheter.

20. The device according to claim 9 , wherein the central wire is configured to be pulled, or the pusher tube is configured to be pushed, independently or simultaneously, to shorten a distance between the proximal engaging element and the distal engaging element.
