Abstract

A method of simplifying the implementation of Synchronous Ethernet on an Ethernet device having a first port and a second port device using a predetermined protocol and signaling, comprises delivering a master clock from a Synchronous Ethernet system to the first port of the Ethernet device; transmitting the delivered master clock to the second port of the Ethernet device independently of the protocol and signaling of the Ethernet device; and transmitting the master clock from the second port of the Ethernet device to a downstream device that supports Synchronous Ethernet. In one implementation, the Ethernet device has a local clock, and the method synchronizes the local clock to the master clock. In another implementation, the Ethernet device does not have a local clock, and the master clock is transmitted from the second port of the Ethernet device to the downstream device without any synchronizing operation at the Ethernet device.

Claims (13)

1. A system to implement synchronous ethernet on a first synchronous ethernet device coupled to a second synchronous ethernet device via a network, comprising:

a master clock received at the first synchronous ethernet device;

the master clock is always re-transmitted to the second synchronous ethernet device, whether or not said second synchronous ethernet device maintains a local clock synchronized.

2. The system of claim 1 in which said first synchronous ethernet device does not have a local clock, and said master clock is transmitted to said synchronous device without any synchronizing operation at said first synchronous ethernet device.

3. The system of claim 1 in which at least one of said first synchronous ethernet device or said second synchronous ethernet device is configured to recognize that the master clock has been received.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein said first synchronous ethernet device comprises state machines.

5. A method to implement synchronous ethernet on a first synchronous ethernet device coupled to a second synchronous ethernet device via a network, said method comprising:

receiving a master clock at said first synchronous ethernet device and always transmitting said master clock to the second synchronous ethernet device, whether or not said second synchronous ethernet device maintains a local clock synchronized.

6. The method of claim 5 in which said second synchronous ethernet device has a local clock and further comprising synchronizing the local clock to said master clock.

7. The method of claim 5 in which said second synchronous ethernet device does not have a local clock, and said master clock is transmitted from said first synchronous ethernet device to said second synchronous ethernet device without any synchronizing at said first synchronous ethernet device.

8. The method of claim 5 , wherein said first synchronous ethernet device comprise state machines.

9. The system of claim 1 in which said second synchronous ethernet device has a local clock and further comprising synchronizing the local clock to said master clock.

10. The method of claim 5 in which at least one of said first synchronous ethernet device or said second synchronous ethernet device is configured to recognize that the master clock has been received.
