Abstract

A device is configured for closing an aperture in a wall of a blood vessel. An embodiment of the device includes a body and at least one suture element held within the body. A suture capture rod is positioned within the body and is operatively associated with the suture element and arranged to pass the suture element through a vessel wall such that opposed portions of the suture element extend from the vessel wall. A removable guidewire segment is removably attached to a distal end of the body.

Claims (16)

1. A method, comprising:

introducing, into a vessel wall, a removable guidewire segment and a distal end of a body, the removable guidewire segment removably attached to a distal housing portion at the distal end of the body, the body comprising a suture element held within the body and at least one suture capture rod within the body, the suture capture rod being operatively associated with the suture element and arranged to pass the suture element through the vessel wall such that opposed portions of the suture element extend from the vessel wall;

deploying, via the body, the suture element into the vessel wall;

exposing, from the vessel wall and while maintaining pressure on the suture element, the distal housing portion of the body;

detaching, from the removable guidewire segment and at the distal housing portion, the body such that a proximal end of the removable guidewire segment is detached and outside of the vessel wall; and

attaching, to the proximal end of the removable guidewire segment and via a coupling component, a distal end of a proximal guidewire extension, wherein there is a first smooth transition at a first juncture between the proximal guidewire extension and the coupling component and a second smooth transition at a second juncture between the removable guidewire segment and the coupling component.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

prior to introducing, into the vessel wall, the removable guidewire segment and the distal end of the body, positioning a tip of the removable guidewire segment into the vessel wall, the positioning done with a micro puncture catheter or a needle and without the body attached to the removable guidewire segment; and

attaching, at the distal housing portion, the distal end of the body to the removable guidewire segment.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

inserting, over the removable guidewire segment and the proximal guidewire extension, an introducer sheath, the introducer sheath inserted into a vessel through the vessel wall.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein an outer diameter of the coupling component does not interfere with the introducer sheath.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the proximal guidewire extension and the removable guidewire segment collectively form an elongated guidewire when attached to one another.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the coupling component is a screw, snap, or a spring coupler.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the coupling component does not form a step at the first and second junctures.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein an insertion tool is used to attach the proximal guidewire extension to the removable guidewire segment.
