Abstract

An annuloplasty implant comprises a flexible member, helical anchors, and non-compressible portions. The helical anchors are configured to anchor the flexible member at least partway around the valve by being screwed into tissue of the heart of a subject. Each of the non-compressible portions comprises a helical coil having a plurality of turns, and at rest has a helix pitch that contacts each turn of the coil with an adjacent turn of the coil. The flexible member extends through the non-compressible portions. The implant is configured such that applying tension to the flexible member from one end thereof contracts the implant, thereby drawing the anchors closer to each other, the helical coil of each of the non-compressible portions inhibiting contraction of the implant at the non-compressible portion.

Claims (53)

1. An apparatus, for use at a valve of a heart of a subject, the apparatus comprising an annuloplasty implant that comprises:

a flexible member;

a plurality of helical anchors, configured to anchor the flexible member at least partway around the valve by each of the helical anchors being screwed into tissue of the heart; and

non-compressible portions,

wherein:

each of the non-compressible portions comprises a helical coil having a plurality of turns, and at rest has a helix pitch that contacts each turn of the coil with an adjacent turn of the coil,

the flexible member extends through the non-compressible portions, and

the implant is configured such that applying tension to the flexible member from one end thereof contracts the implant, thereby drawing the anchors closer to each other, the helical coil of each of the non-compressible portions inhibiting contraction of the implant at the non-compressible portion.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein each of the non-compressible portions is flexible.

3. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the non-compressible portions include a first non-compressible portion and a second non-compressible portion, and a combined length of the first non-compressible portion and the second non-compressible portion is 10-50 mm.

4. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising an anchor advancement tube, configured to screw each of the anchors into the tissue.

5. The apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a locking mechanism having:

an unlocked state in which the locking mechanism is configured to facilitate the contraction of the implant by facilitating application of the tension to the flexible member, and

a locked state in which the locking mechanism is configured to maintain the contraction of the implant by maintaining the tension on the flexible member.

6. The apparatus according to claim 5 , further comprising an elongate tool, configured to maintain the locking mechanism in the unlocked state during contraction of the implant.

7. The apparatus according to claim 6 , wherein:

the locking mechanism comprises a compressible element that is biased to put the locking mechanism into the locked state,

the elongate tool maintains the locking mechanism in the unlocked state by maintaining the compressible element compressed, and

the apparatus is configured such that removal of the elongate tool from the locking mechanism allows the compressible element to relax, thereby putting the locking mechanism into the locked state.

8. An annuloplasty implant that comprises:

a flexible member;

a plurality of anchors, configured to anchor the flexible member at least partway around the valve by each of the plurality of anchors being inserted into tissue of the heart; and

non-compressible portions,

wherein:

each of the non-compressible portions comprises a helical coil having a plurality of turns, and at rest has a helix pitch that contacts each turn of the coil with an adjacent turn of the coil,

the flexible member extends through the non-compressible portions, and

the implant is configured such that applying tension to the flexible member from one end thereof contracts the implant, thereby drawing the anchors closer to each other, the helical coil of each of the non-compressible portions inhibiting contraction of the implant at the non-compressible portion.

9. The annuloplasty implant according to claim 8 , wherein each of the non-compressible portions is flexible.

10. The annuloplasty implant according to claim 8 , wherein the non-compressible portions include a first non-compressible portion and a second non-compressible portion, and a combined length of the first non-compressible portion and the second non-compressible portion is 10-50 mm.

11. The annuloplasty implant according to claim 8 , wherein the anchors are helical and configured to be screwed into the tissue.

12. The annuloplasty implant according to claim 8 , further comprising a locking mechanism having:

an unlocked state in which the locking mechanism is configured to facilitate the contraction of the implant by facilitating application of the tension to the flexible member, and

a locked state in which the locking mechanism is configured to maintain the contraction of the implant by maintaining the tension on the flexible member.

13. The annuloplasty implant according to claim 12 , further comprising an elongate tool, configured to maintain the locking mechanism in the unlocked state during contraction of the implant.

14. The annuloplasty implant according to claim 13 , wherein:

the locking mechanism comprises a compressible element that is biased to put the locking mechanism into the locked state,

the elongate tool maintains the locking mechanism in the unlocked state by maintaining the compressible element compressed, and

the annuloplasty implant is configured such that removal of the elongate tool from the locking mechanism allows the compressible element to relax, thereby putting the locking mechanism into the locked state.

15. A system, for use at a valve of a heart of a subject, the system comprising:

an annuloplasty implant that comprises:

a flexible member;

a plurality of helical anchors, configured to anchor the flexible member at least partway around the valve by each of the helical anchors being screwed into tissue of the heart; and

non-compressible portions comprising a helical coil having a plurality of turns, wherein at rest each turn of the coil contacts an adjacent turn of the coil, and wherein the flexible member extends through the non-compressible portions;

an anchor advancement tube, configured to screw each of the anchors into the tissue; and

a locking mechanism having an unlocked state in which the locking mechanism is configured to facilitate the contraction of the implant by application of the tension to the flexible member and a locked state in which the locking mechanism is configured to maintain the contraction of the implant by maintaining the tension on the flexible member;

wherein the implant is configured such that applying tension to the flexible member from one end thereof contracts the implant, thereby drawing the anchors closer to each other, the helical coil of each of the non-compressible portions inhibiting contraction of the implant at the non-compressible portion.

16. The system according to claim 15 , wherein each of the non-compressible portions is flexible.
