Abstract

Various enhancements to grid-interactive inverters in accordance with embodiments of the invention are disclosed. One embodiment includes input terminals configured to receive a direct current, output terminals configured to provide an alternating output current to the utility grid, a controller, an output current sensor, and a DC-AC inverter stage comprising a plurality of switches controlled by control signals generated by the controller. In addition, the controller is configured to: generate control signals that cause the switches in the DC-AC inverter stage to switch a direct current in a bidirectional manner; measure the alternating output current; perform frequency decomposition of the output current; and generate control signals that cause the switches in the DC-AC inverter stage to switch current in a way that the magnitude of a plurality of unwanted current components is subtracted from the resulting output current.

input terminals capable of receiving a direct current (DC);

output terminals capable of providing an alternating current (AC) output to an electrical grid;

at least one sensor capable of measuring voltage at the output terminals;

a DC-AC inverter comprising a plurality of switches controlled by control signals;

a controller configured to:

receive measurements from the at least one sensor and generating a set of control signals that cause the plurality of switches to switch current in a bidirectional manner across the output terminals; and

generate the set of control signals such that the waveshape of the AC output is altered to achieve different power factors based upon changes in the measured voltage.

2. The grid-interactive microinverter of claim 1 , wherein an achieved power factor is a leading power factor.

3. The grid-interactive microinverter of claim 1 , wherein an achieved power factor is a lagging power factor.

4. The grid-interactive microinverter of claim 1 , wherein the altered AC output supplies reactive power to the electrical grid.

5. The grid-interactive microinverter of claim 1 , wherein altered AC output sinks reactive power from the electrical grid.

6. The grid-interactive microinverter of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to generate the set of control signals such that AC is drawn from the grid and rectified into DC in order to charge a battery.

7. The grid-interactive microinverter of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to receive control information from a gateway, where the gateway is connected to a plurality of grid-interactive microinverters.

8. The grid-interactive microinverter of claim 7 , wherein the controller is further configured to provide status updates to the gateway.

9. The grid-interactive microinverter of claim 7 , wherein the controller and the gateway communicate via power line communication.

10. The grid-interactive microinverter of claim 1 , wherein the control signals further cause the plurality of switches to switch current in a bidirectional manner across the output terminals such that unwanted harmonic components are reduced.

11. The grid-interactive microinverter of claim 1 , wherein to generate the control signals, the controller is further configured to:

power a frequency decomposition on the AC output; and

generate a waveshape having a Q component that results in a desired power factor based on the frequency decomposition.

12. A method for controlling electrical interaction between an electrical grid and a grid-interactive inverter, comprising:

receiving, by a controller, a voltage measurement of the voltage at output terminals of the grid-interactive inverter, where the output terminals are connected to the electrical grid;

identifying, using the controller, a reactive load demand based on the grid voltage measurement;

generating, using the controller, control signals for a plurality of switches contained within a direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC) inverter of the grid-interactive inverter, where the control signals configure the plurality of switches to switch an incoming DC in bidirectional manner across the output terminals to provide the AC output such that the AC output is altered to achieve different power factors based upon changes in the measured voltage.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein an achieved power factor is a leading power factor.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein an achieved power factor is a lagging power factor.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the altered AC output supplies reactive power to the electrical grid.

16. The method of claim 12 , wherein altered AC output sinks reactive power from the electrical grid.

17. The method of claim 12 , wherein the controller is further the set of control signals is generated such that the plurality of switches is configured to draw AC from the grid and rectify the AC into DC in order to charge a battery.

18. The method of claim 12 , further comprising receiving control information at the controller from a gateway, where the gateway is connected to a plurality of grid-interactive microinverters.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising providing status updates to the gateway via powerline communication.

20. The method of claim 12 , wherein the control signals further configure the plurality of switches to switch current in a bidirectional manner across the output terminals such that unwanted harmonic components are reduced.

21. The method of claim 12 , wherein to generate the control signals, further comprising:
