Abstract

Systems and associated methods are described for providing recording of a blacked out media content item. A system receives a request from a first user device associated with a profile to record a media content item scheduled to broadcast on a second user device (different from the first user device) associated with the profile, at a second location. The system determines that the media content item is subject to a blackout during a blackout period within a blackout region. The system determines that the first user device and the second user device are associated with the same profile and that the first user device is at a first location outside the blackout region. The system then accesses the media content item for recording on the second user device during the blackout period. The system further transmits the recorded media content item to the first user device after expiry of the blackout period.

Claims (52)

1. A method for providing blacked out media content item for recording, the method comprising:

receiving a request from a first user device associated with a profile to record a media content item scheduled to broadcast on a second user device associated with the profile, at a second location, wherein the first user device is different from the second user device;

determining that the media content item is subject to a blackout during a blackout period within a blackout region;

determining that the first user device and the second user device are associated with the profile;

determining that the first user device is at a first location outside the blackout region;

in response to determining that the first user device is outside the blackout region, recording the media content item to the memory of the second user device during the blackout period; and

transmitting the recorded media content item from the second user device to the first user device via a communication network after expiry of the blackout period.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

permitting the recorded media content item to be played on the first user device when the blackout period has expired.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

generating for display the recorded media content item on the first user device when the blackout period has expired.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

storing the recorded media content item in the first user device after transmission of the recorded media content item; and

causing a play back of the stored media content item.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

causing a play back of the recorded media content on the first user device.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

determining a channel scheduled to broadcast the media content item on the second user device at the second location.

7. The method of claim 6 further comprising:

generating for display a program blackout on the channel scheduled to broadcast the media content item during the blackout period.

8. The method of claim 6 further comprising:

determining another channel different from the channel scheduled to broadcast the media content item;

recording the media content item on the another channel.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the blackout period is an entire time of the broadcast of the media content item.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the blackout period is a portion of time of the broadcast of the media content item.

11. A system for providing blacked out media content item for recording, the system comprising:

an input/output (I/O) circuitry configured to:

receive a request from a first user device associated with a profile to record a media content item scheduled to broadcast on a second user device associated with the profile, at a second location, wherein the first user device is different from the second user device;

a control circuitry communicably coupled to the I/O circuitry configured to:

determine that the media content item is subject to a blackout during a blackout period within a blackout region;

determine that the first user device and the second user device are associated with the profile;

determine that the first user device is at a first location outside the blackout region;

in response to determining that the first user device is outside the blackout region, record the media content item on the memory of the second user device during the blackout period; and

transmit the recorded media content item from the second user device to the first user device via a communication network after expiry of the blackout period.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

permit the recorded media content item to be played on the first user device when the blackout period has expired.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

generate for display the recorded media content item on the first user device when the blackout period has expired.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

store the recorded media content item in the first user device after transmission of the recorded media content item; and

cause a play back of the stored media content item.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

cause a play back of the recorded media content on the first user device.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

determine a channel scheduled to broadcast the media content item on the second user device at the second location.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

generate for display a program blackout on the channel scheduled to broadcast the media content item during the blackout period.

18. The system of claim 16 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

determine another channel different from the channel scheduled to broadcast the media content item;

record the media content item on the another channel.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the blackout period is an entire time of the broadcast of the media content item.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein the blackout period is a portion of time of the broadcast of the media content item.
