Abstract

A method and apparatus for monitoring a door or a window is disclosed. In one embodiment, a method is described, comprising receiving, by a processor, an electronic signal from a motion sensor in response to movement of the door or window, determining a direction of movement of the door or window from the electronic signal by the processor, comparing the direction of movement to a predetermined direction by the processor, detecting, by the processor, an alarm condition of the door or window if the electronic signal indicates that the door or window is being opened, and transmitting, by a transmitter coupled to the processor, an alarm signal when the alarm condition has been detected.

Claims (65)

1. A method for providing an alarm for a door or a window by a security apparatus, comprising:

receiving an electronic signal from a motion sensor within the security apparatus in response to movement of the door or window;

determining a direction of movement of the door or window;

detecting an alarm condition of the door or window if the electronic signal indicates that the door or window is moving in a direction that causes the door or window to become open.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein detecting an alarm condition further comprises:

determining that the electronic signal has exceeded a predetermined acceleration threshold in addition to determining that the door or window is moving in a direction that causes the door or window to become open.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein detecting an alarm condition further comprises:

determining that the electronic signal has exceeded a predetermined acceleration threshold for at least a predetermined time in addition to determining that the door or window is moving in a direction that causes the door or window to become open.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a signal to disable the security apparatus while a user positions the door or window into an open position;

disabling, by the processor, the security apparatus in response to receiving the signal;

and

re-enabling the security apparatus after the door or window has been placed into the open position.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the signal to disable the security apparatus is generated by a user interface on the security apparatus.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the signal to disable the security apparatus is received by a wireless receiver of the security apparatus.

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein re-enabling the security apparatus comprises:

monitoring the motion sensor after the security apparatus has been disabled;

determining that the door or window is stationary; and

re-enabling the security apparatus when the door or window has become stationary.

8. The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

after re-enabling the security apparatus, monitoring the motion sensor to determine if the door or window has been moved from the open position; and

transmitting an alarm signal when the door or window is moved from the open position.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a second electronic signal from the motion sensor;

comparing a value of the second electronic signal to a threshold deceleration value stored in a memory; and

determining that the door or window has been shut when the value of the second electronic signal exceeds the deceleration value.

10. The method of claim 5 , wherein monitoring the motion sensor to determine if the door or window has been moved from the open position comprises determining when the door or window has been moved into a further open position.

11. A security apparatus for providing security monitoring of a door or a window, comprising:

an internal motion sensor;

a memory for storing processor-executable instructions; and

a processor, coupled to the memory and the motion sensor, for executing the processor-executable instructions that cause the security apparatus to:

receive an electronic signal from the internal motion sensor in response to movement of the door or window;

determine a direction of movement of the door or window;

detect an alarm condition of the door or window if the electronic signal indicates that the door or window is moving in a direction that causes the door or window to become open.

12. The security apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the processor-executable instructions that causes the security apparatus to detect an alarm condition comprises further instructions that causes the security apparatus to:

determine that the electronic signal has exceeded a predetermined acceleration threshold stored in the memory in addition to determining that the door or window is moving in a direction that causes the door or window to become open.

13. The security apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the processor-executable instructions that causes the security apparatus to detect an alarm condition comprises further instructions that causes the security apparatus to:

determine that the electronic signal has exceeded a predetermined acceleration threshold stored in the memory for at least a predetermined time in addition to determining that the door or window is moving in a direction that causes the door or window to become open.

14. The security apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the processor-executable instructions further comprise instructions that causes the security apparatus to:

receive a signal to disable the security apparatus while a user positions the door or window into an open position;

disable, by the processor, the security apparatus in response to receiving the signal;

and

re-enable the security apparatus after the door or window has been placed into the open position.

15. The security apparatus of claim 14 , further comprising:

a user interface coupled to the processor;

wherein the signal to disable the security apparatus is generated by the user interface in response to manual input from a user.

16. The security apparatus of claim 14 , further comprising:

a wireless receiver coupled to the processor;

wherein the signal to disable the security apparatus is received by the wireless receiver.

17. The security apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the processor-executable instructions that causes the security apparatus to re-enable the security apparatus comprises further instructions that causes the security apparatus to:

monitor the motion sensor after the security apparatus has been disabled;

determine that the door or window is stationary; and

re-enable the security apparatus when the door or window has become stationary.

18. The security apparatus of claim 14 , further comprising:

a transmitter coupled to the processor;

wherein the processor-executable instructions further comprise instructions that causes the security apparatus to:

after re-enabling the security apparatus, monitor the motion sensor to determine if the door or window has been moved from the open position; and

transmit, by the transmitter, an alarm signal when the door or window is moved from the open position.

19. The security apparatus of claim 11 , further comprising:

a wireless receiver coupled to the processor;

wherein the processor-executable instructions further comprise instructions that causes the security apparatus to:

receive a second electronic signal from the motion sensor;

compare a value of the second electronic signal to a threshold deceleration value stored in the memory; and

determine that the door or window has been shut when the value of the second electronic signal exceeds the deceleration value.

The security apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the processor-executable instructions that causes the security apparatus to monitor the motion sensor to determine if the door or window has been moved from the open position comprises further instructions that causes the security apparatus to determine when the door or window has been moved into a further open position.
