Abstract

Light-emitting quantum dot films, quantum dot lighting devices, and quantum dot-based backlight units are provided. Related compositions, components, and methods are also described. Improved quantum dot encapsulation and matrix materials are provided. Quantum dot films with protective barriers are described. High-efficiency, high brightness, and high-color purity quantum dot-based lighting devices are also included, as well as methods for improving efficiency and optical characteristics in quantum dot-based lighting devices.

Claims (44)

1. A display backlighting unit comprising:

at least one primary light source that emits primary light;

a light guide panel (LGP) optically coupled to the at least one primary light source, wherein the primary light is transmitted uniformly through the LGP;

a remote phosphor film comprising a first population of light emitting quantum dots (QDs) configured to emit first secondary light having a longer wavelength than the primary light wherein the QD's comprise an emission spectrum having less than 40 nm full width and half maximum (FWHM),

wherein the primary light transmits uniformly through the LGP and into the remote phosphor film, wherein at least a portion of the primary light is absorbed by the first population of QDs and reemitted by the first population of QDs as the first secondary light having a longer wavelength than the primary light, and

wherein the remote phosphor film is sandwiched between at least two barrier layers, wherein each of the two barrier layers includes a polymer sublayer and an oxide sublayer, wherein the oxide sublayer is disposed directly adjacent the remote phosphor film.

The display BLU of claim 1 , wherein the remote phosphor film further comprises a second population of light emitting QDs configured to emit second secondary light having a longer wavelength than the primary light, the second secondary light being different than the first secondary light, wherein at least a portion of the primary light is absorbed by the second population of QDs and reemitted by the second population of QDs as the second secondary light having a longer wavelength than the primary light.

3. The display BLU of claim 2 , wherein the remote phosphor film further comprises one or more primary light scattering features which scatter primary light toward the first and second populations of QDs.

The display BLU of claim 3 , wherein the remote phosphor film comprises a first QD phosphor material film layer comprising a first matrix material and a second QD phosphor material film layer comprising a second matrix material, wherein the first and second populations of QDs are embedded in the first matrix material and the second matrix material respectively.

5. The display BLU of claim 4 , wherein at least a portion of the scattering features are disposed in the first QD phosphor material film layer or the second QD phosphor material film layer.

6. The display BLU of claim 4 , wherein the one or more primary light scattering features and the first and second populations of QDs are dispersed uniformly throughout the QD phosphor material film.

7. The display BLU of claim 3 , wherein the one or more primary light scattering features comprise scattering particles.

8. The display BLU of claim 7 , wherein, the scattering particles comprise spherical scattering beads, or the scattering particles comprise silica, borosilicate, or polystyrene beads.

9. The display BLU of claim 3 , wherein the scattering features are formed on a top surface or a bottom surface of the QD phosphor material film.

10. The display BLU of claim 3 , where in the at least one primary light source comprises one or more blue LEDs coupled to one or more edges or the bottom surface of the LGP, wherein the one or more LEDs are disposed within the same plane as the LGP.

The display BLU of claim 1 , wherein the remote phosphor film further comprises a second population of light emitting QDs wherein the first population of QDs is configured to emit first, red, secondary light and the second population of QDs is configured to emit second, green, secondary light, and wherein at least a portion of the primary light is absorbed by the two populations of QDs and reemitted by the QDs as the first and second secondary light of lower energy or longer wavelength than the primary light.

12. The display BLU of claim 1 , wherein the quantum dots comprise a quantum efficiency greater than or approximately equal to 90%.

13. The display BLU of claim 12 , wherein the quantum dots comprise a size in a range of 1 nm and 15 nm.

14. The display BLU of claim 1 , wherein the barrier layers eliminate or reduce pinhole defect alignment in the barrier layer, providing an effective barrier to oxygen and moisture penetration into the remote phosphor film.

The display BLU of claim 1 , wherein the display BLU comprises one or more brightness enhancement films disposed above the remote phosphor film, such that the remote phosphor film is between the one or more brightness enhancement films and the LGP, the one or more brightness enhancement films being configured to reflect a portion of the primary light towards the remote phosphor film.

16. A display backlighting unit (BLU), comprising:

at least one primary light source that emits primary light;

a light guide panel (LGP) optically coupled to the at least one primary light source, wherein the primary light is transmitted uniformly through the LGP;

a remote phosphor film comprising a first population of light emitting quantum dots (QDs) configured to emit first secondary light having a longer wavelength than the primary light, and

wherein the primary light transmits uniformly through the LGP and into the remote phosphor film, wherein at least a portion of the primary light is absorbed by the first population of QDs and reemitted by the first population of QDs as the first secondary light having a longer wavelength than the primary light,

wherein the remote phosphor film is sandwiched between at least two barrier layers, wherein each of the two barrier layers includes a polymer sublayer and an oxide sublayer, wherein the oxide sublayer is disposed directly adjacent the remote phosphor film, and

wherein the QDs comprise an emission spectrum having less than 40 nm full width at half maximum (FWHM), and wherein the QDs comprise a quantum efficiency greater than or approximately equal to 90%.

17. The display BLU of claim 16 , wherein and wherein the QDs comprise a size in the range of about 1 nm and about 15 nm.

The display BLU of claim 17 , wherein the remote phosphor film further comprises a second population of light emitting QDs configured to emit second secondary light having a longer wavelength than the primary light, the second secondary light being different than the first secondary light, wherein at least a portion of the primary light is absorbed by the second population of QDs and reemitted by the second population of QDs as the second secondary light having a longer wavelength than the primary light.

The display BLU of claim 17 , wherein the remote phosphor film further comprises a second population of light emitting QDs wherein the first population of QDs is configured to emit first, red, secondary light and the second population of QDs is configured to emit second, green, secondary light, and wherein at least a portion of the primary light is absorbed by the two populations of QDs and reemitted by the QDs as the first and second secondary light of lower energy or longer wavelength than the primary light.

20. The display BLU of claim 16 , wherein the barrier layers eliminate or reduce pinhole defect alignment in the barrier layer, providing an effective barrier to oxygen and moisture penetration into the remote phosphor film.

21. A method of forming a display backlighting unit (BLU), comprising:

(a) providing at least one primary light source configured to emit primary light;

(b) providing a light guide panel (LGP) optically coupled to the at least one primary light source, wherein the LGP is configured to uniformly transmit the primary light there through;

(c) providing a remote phosphor film comprising two populations of light emitting quantum dots (QDs) including a first population of QDs configured to emit first, red, secondary light and a second population of QDs configured to emit second, green, secondary light, wherein at least a portion of the primary light is absorbed by the two populations of QDs and reemitted by the QDs as the first and second secondary light of lower energy or longer wavelength than the primary light;

(d) providing a first barrier film and a second barrier film, wherein the first and second barrier films are each disposed adjacent the remote phosphor film and on opposite sides thereof, and wherein each of the first and second barrier films includes a polymer sublayer and an oxide sublayer, wherein the oxide sublayer is disposed directly adjacent the remote phosphor film; and

(e) disposing the remote phosphor film adjacent the LGP such that the primary light transmits uniformly through the LGP and into the remote phosphor film; and

wherein the QDs comprise an emission spectrum having less than 40 nm full width at half maximum (FWHM).

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein the QDs comprise a quantum efficiency greater than or approximately equal to 90%.

23. The method of claim 22 , wherein each multi-layered barrier layer eliminates or reduces pinhole defect alignment in the barrier layer, providing an effective barrier to oxygen and moisture penetration into the remote phosphor film.

24. The method of claim 21 wherein the QDs comprise a size in the range of about 1 nm and about 15 nm.

25. The method of claim 22 wherein the QDs comprise a size in the range of about 1 nm and about 15 nm.

26. The method of claim 24 , wherein each multi-layered barrier layer eliminates or reduces pinhole defect alignment in the barrier layer, providing an effective barrier to oxygen and moisture penetration into the remote phosphor film.

27. The method of claim 21 , wherein each multi-layered barrier layer eliminates or reduces pinhole defect alignment in the barrier layer, providing an effective barrier to oxygen and moisture penetration into the remote phosphor film.
