Abstract

Techniques for joining nodes and subcomponents are presented herein. An additively manufactured first node or subcomponent has a groove. An additively manufactured second node or subcomponent has a tongue configured to extend into and mate with the groove to form a tongue-and-groove connection between the first and second node or subcomponent. In some aspects, the tongue-groove connection may extend substantially around a periphery of the node or subcomponent. In other aspects, a first subcomponent having a fluid pipe interface may be coupled via a tongue-groove connection to a second subcomponent having a fluid pipe interface, thereby enabling fluid to flow between subcomponents of the resulting integrated component.

Claims (39)

1. An apparatus, comprising:

an additively manufactured first node comprising a first fluid pipe interface, and a first groove disposed along a first region thereof; and

an additively manufactured second node comprising a second fluid pipe interface, and a first protrusion disposed along a second region thereof and extending into the first groove to form a connection between the first and second node, wherein the first fluid pipe interface is coupled to the second fluid pipe interface to enable fluid flow between the first and second nodes.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first node further comprises a channel extending from an exterior surface of the first node to the first groove for adhesive injection.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising adhesive between the first protrusion and the first groove.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first protrusion comprises a centering feature.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the centering feature comprises a proximal portion of the first protrusion having a clearance fit with the first groove.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first and second nodes cooperate to form a sealant reservoir on each side of the connection.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first fluid pipe interface includes a fluid pipe tongue substantially enclosing the first fluid pipe interface,

the second fluid pipe interface includes a fluid pipe groove substantially enclosing the second fluid pipe interface and into which the fluid pipe tongue is mated, and

the mated fluid pipe tongue-and-groove is sealed to enable the fluid flow between the first and second nodes.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first fluid pipe interface comprises a first fluid pipe segment to enable the fluid flow between the first and second nodes.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the second fluid pipe interface comprises a second fluid pipe segment to enable the fluid flow between the first and second nodes.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first protrusion is mated with the first groove to form at least a portion of a component.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the component comprises a vehicle component.

12. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the component comprises a gear case.

13. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the component comprises a load-bearing component.

14. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising an additively manufactured third node comprising a third fluid pipe interface, wherein the third fluid pipe interface is coupled to the first node to enable the fluid flow between the third node and the first node and to the second node.

15. An apparatus, comprising:

an additively manufactured first subcomponent comprising a first fluid pipe interface, and a first mating structure disposed in a first mating region thereof, and

an additively manufactured second subcomponent comprising a second fluid pipe interface, and a second mating structure disposed in a second mating region thereof,

wherein the first mating structure is configured to mate with the second mating structure in the first and second mating regions, and

wherein the first fluid pipe interface is coupled to the second fluid pipe interface to enable fluid flow between the first subcomponent and the second subcomponent.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the first fluid pipe interface comprises a first fluid pipe segment to enable the fluid flow between the first subcomponent and the second subcomponent.

17. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the first mating structure comprises a first tongue-and-groove structure, the second mating structure comprises a second tongue-and-groove structure, and the first tongue-and-groove structure is mated with the second tongue-and-groove structure to form at least a portion of a component.

18. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the component comprises a gear case.

19. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the component comprises a load-bearing component.

20. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the first and second mating structures are configured to seal the first and second mating regions together.

21. The apparatus of claim 17 , further comprising an adhesive applied between the first and second mating structures.

22. The apparatus of claim 21 , wherein the adhesive is applied via a fill port providing a flow to a first area between the first and second mating structures.

23. The apparatus of claim 22 , wherein the adhesive is drawn via a vacuum port to a second area between the first and second mating structures distal from the first area.

24. The apparatus of claim 17 , further comprising a centering feature disposed longitudinally within one side of the first mating structure.

25. The apparatus of claim 20 , further comprising a first seal groove disposed along a first peripheral region adjacent the first fluid pipe interface, the seal groove configured to accept a compliant seal.

26. The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the first and second tongue-and-groove structures comprise at least a portion of an outer wall of the gear case.

27. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the first fluid pipe interface is disposed substantially orthogonal to and adjacent the first mating region, the first fluid pipe interface including a fluid pipe tongue structure substantially enclosing the first fluid pipe interface,

the second fluid pipe interface is disposed substantially orthogonal to and adjacent the second mating region, the second fluid pipe interface including a fluid pipe groove structure substantially enclosing the second fluid pipe interface and into which the second fluid pipe tongue structure is mated, and wherein the mated fluid pipe tongue-and-groove structures are sealed to enable the fluid flow between the first and second subcomponents.

28. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the second fluid pipe interface comprises a second fluid pipe segment to enable the fluid flow between the first subcomponent and the second subcomponent.
