Abstract

A beverage-making machine includes: a housing; a fluid reservoir mounted to the housing; a first pump fluidly connected with the water reservoir; a heating unit comprising a conduit having an upper end and a lower end, the lower end of the conduit fluidly connected with the first pump, the conduit configured and arranged to rise monotonically from lower end to upper end; and a brew station having a brew basket with an inlet fluidly connected with the upper end of the conduit and an outlet, and further having a receptacle platform positioned to receive fluid from the outlet.

Claims (37)

1. A beverage-making machine, comprising:

a housing;

a fluid reservoir mounted to the housing;

a first pump fluidly connected with the fluid reservoir;

a heating unit comprising a generally V-shaped conduit having an upper end and a lower end, the lower end of the generally V-shaped conduit fluidly connected with the first pump, the generally V-shaped conduit configured and arranged to rise monotonically from the lower end to the upper end and so that fluid in the generally V-shaped conduit is heated as the fluid travels from the lower end to the upper end; and

a brew station having a brew basket with an inlet fluidly connected with the upper end of the generally V-shaped conduit and an outlet, and further having a receptacle platform positioned to receive fluid from the outlet.

2. The beverage-making machine defined in claim 1 , further comprising a flow meter fluidly connected with the first pump and the heating unit.

3. The beverage-making machine defined in claim 1 , further comprising a temperature sensor adjacent the upper end of the generally V-shaped conduit, the temperature sensor being operatively connected to the first pump and via a controller, the temperature sensor providing temperature signals to the controller, and the controller controlling operation of the first pump based on the temperature signals.

4. The beverage-making machine defined in claim 3 , wherein the temperature sensor is a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) sensor.

5. The beverage-making machine defined in claim 3 , further comprising an accumulator fluidly connected with the generally V-shaped conduit and a second pump fluidly connected between the accumulator and the brew basket, the second pump being operatively connected with the controller.

6. The beverage-making machine defined in claim 5 , wherein the second pump is configured to operate at a higher volumetric flow rate than the first pump.

7. The beverage-making machine defined in claim 1 , wherein the brew basket is configured to receive a pod.

8. The beverage-making machine defined in claim 1 , wherein the brew chamber is a first brew chamber, and wherein a second brew chamber with a second inlet and a second outlet is mounted to the housing.

9. A beverage-making machine, comprising:

a housing;

a fluid reservoir mounted to the housing;

a first pump fluidly connected with the fluid reservoir;

a heating unit comprising a generally V-shaped conduit having an upper end and a lower end, the lower end of the generally V-shaped conduit fluidly connected with the first pump, the generally V-shaped conduit configured and arranged to rise monotonically from the lower end to the upper end and so that fluid in the generally V-shaped conduit is heated as the fluid travels from the lower end to the upper end;

a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) sensor mounted directly adjacent the upper end of the generally V-shaped conduit;

a brew station having a brew basket with an inlet fluidly connected with the upper end of the generally V-shaped conduit and an outlet, and further having a receptacle platform positioned to receive fluid from the outlet; and

a controller operatively connected with the heating unit, the first pump, and the NTC, such that temperature data detected by the NTC are transmitted to the controller, and operational speed of the first pump is regulated by the controller based on the data from the NTC.

10. The beverage-making machine defined in claim 9 , further comprising a flow meter fluidly connected with the first pump and the heating unit.

11. The beverage-making machine defined in claim 10 , further comprising an accumulator fluidly connected with the generally V-shaped conduit and a second pump fluidly connected between the accumulator and the brew basket, the second pump being operatively connected with the controller.

12. The beverage-making machine defined in claim 11 , wherein the second pump is configured to operate at a higher volumetric flow rate than the first pump.

13. The beverage-making machine defined in claim 9 , wherein the brew basket is configured to receive a pod.

14. The beverage-making machine defined in claim 9 , wherein the brew chamber is a first brew station, and wherein a second brew station with a second inlet and a second outlet is mounted to the housing.

15. A beverage-making machine, comprising:

a housing;

a fluid reservoir mounted to the housing;

a first pump fluidly connected with the fluid reservoir;

a heating unit comprising a generally V-shaped conduit having an upper end and a lower end, the lower end of the generally V-shaped conduit fluidly connected with the first pump, the generally V-shaped conduit configured and arranged to rise monotonically from the lower end to the upper end and so that fluid in the generally V-shaped conduit is heated as the fluid travels from the lower end to the upper end;

an accumulator fluidly connected with the generally V-shaped conduit;

a second pump fluidly connected with the accumulator;

a brew station having a brew basket with an inlet fluidly connected with the upper end of the generally V-shaped conduit and an outlet, and further having a receptacle platform positioned to receive fluid from the outlet; and

a controller operatively connected with the heating unit, the first pump, and the second pump.

16. The beverage making machine defined in claim 15 , wherein a fluid flow path between the fluid reservoir and the accumulator reaches an elevation that is above the accumulator.

17. The beverage making machine defined in claim 16 , wherein the elevation reached by the fluid flow path is about equal to or above a fill line on the fluid reservoir.
