Abstract

Systems, methods, and apparatuses are disclosed for overcoming latency and loss of signal detection in remote control displays. An exemplary system includes a remote control, a host computing device, and one or more target systems communicatively coupled to each other over a wired and/or wireless network. One method includes receiving, by the remote control and from a host computing device, a first video frame captured by a target device, determining a first time corresponding to receipt of the first video frame, receiving, from the host computing device, a second video frame, determining a second time corresponding to receipt of the second video frame, comparing the time difference to a latency threshold, and causing an alert graphic element to be displayed indicating a latency in communication.

Claims (74)

1. A remote control apparatus for one or more target systems comprising:

a display screen for displaying video data and graphic elements;

a memory device storing a file for an alert graphic element and display parameters for displaying the alert graphic element and a video data graphic element having video display parameters for displaying video data including at least one of a latency threshold or a loss of signal threshold;

a communication interface comprising an application programming interface (“API”) communicatively coupled to the memory device, wherein the communication interface enables a host computer to specify the display parameters of the alert graphic element and the video data graphic element, and cause the video data and the graphic elements to be displayed; and

a processor configured to:

receive a video frame from the host computer via the API,

determine a time difference between reception of the video frame and a previous video frame,

compare the time difference to at least one of the latency threshold or the loss of signal threshold,

transmit an alert message to the host computer indicative that the time difference exceeded the at least one of the latency threshold or the loss of signal threshold,

receive a command message from the host computer via the API, the command message identifying the alert graphic element,

determine that the command message is related to the alert graphic element stored in the memory device, and

cause the alert graphic element to be displayed on the display screen.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one of the latency threshold or the loss of signal threshold is between 50 milliseconds (“ms”) and 10 seconds.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to:

determine the video frame corresponds to the video data graphic element in the memory device; and

cause the video frame to be displayed within the video data graphic element on the display screen based on the video display parameters.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the communication interface is communicatively coupled to the host computer via at least one of a serial connection, an Ethernet connection, a Bluetooth® connection, or a Zigbee® connection.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to identify, based on metadata associated with the video frame and the previous video frame, a latency in communication between the host computer and the one or more target systems.

6. A remote control apparatus for target systems comprising:

a display screen for displaying video data and graphic elements;

a memory device storing a file for an alert graphic element and display parameters for displaying the alert graphic element and a video data graphic element having video display parameters for displaying video data including at least one of a latency threshold or a loss of signal threshold;

a communication interface comprising an application programming interface (“API”) communicatively coupled to the memory device, wherein the communication interface enables a host computer to specify the display parameters of the alert graphic element and the video data graphic element, and cause the video data and the graphic elements to be displayed;

a timer; and

a processor configured to:

receive a video frame from the host computer via the API,

start the timer;

determine the timer has reached at least one of the latency threshold or the loss of signal threshold before a next video frame is received,

transmit an alert message to the host computer indicative that the timer has reached the at least one of the latency threshold or the loss of signal threshold,

receive a command message from the host computer via the API, the command message identifying the alert graphic element,

determine that the command message is related to the alert graphic element stored in the memory device, and

cause the alert graphic element to be displayed on the display screen.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the at least one of the latency threshold or the loss of signal threshold is between 50 ms and 10 seconds.

8. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the processor is configured to:

determine that the video frame corresponds to the video data graphic element in the memory device; and

cause the video frame to be displayed within the video data graphic element on the display screen based on the video display parameters.

9. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the processor is configured to identify, based on metadata associated with the video frame and the next video frame, a latency in communication between the host computer and the one or more target systems.

10. A method of latency detection in remote control displays, the method comprising:

receiving, by a remote control device from a host computing device, a first video frame comprising first video data captured by a target device and first metadata indicating when the first video data was received by the host computing device;

determining, by the remote control device, a first time corresponding to receipt of the first video frame by the remote control device;

causing, based on one or more video display parameters, the first video frame to be displayed on a display screen associated with the remote control device;

receiving, by the remote control device from the host computing device, a second video frame comprising second video data captured by the target device and second metadata indicating when the second video data was received by the host computing device;

determining, by the remote control device, a second time corresponding to receipt of the second video frame, wherein the second time is chronologically later than the first time;

determining, by the remote control device based on the first time and the second time, a latency in communication between the remote control device and the target device;

extracting, by the remote control device from the first video frame and the second video frame, the first metadata and the second metadata to evaluate communication between the host computing device and the remote control device;

determining a first duration of time between when the first video data was received by the host computing device and when the second video data was received by the host computing device using the first metadata and the second metadata;

determining a second duration of time between the first time corresponding to the receipt of the first video frame by the remote control device and the second time;

identifying, based on a comparison between the first duration of time and the second duration of time, a latency in communication between the host computing device and the remote control device;

causing an alert graphic element to be displayed on the display screen associated with the remote control device, wherein the alert graphic element indicates the latency in communication between the remote control device and the target device; and

causing a second alert graphic element to be displayed on the display screen associated with the remote control device, wherein the second alert graphic element indicates the latency in communication between the host computing device and the remote control device.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the second time corresponds to receipt of the second video frame by the remote control device.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the determining the latency in communication between the remote control device and the target device further comprises:

comparing a duration between the first time and the second time to a threshold for latency between the remote control device and the target system.

13. The method of claim 10 , further comprising, after the receiving the first video frame:

activating, by the remote control device, a digital counter to measure time since the receipt of the first video frame, wherein the second time is when the digital counter measures time that has reached a threshold for latency between the remote control device and the target system.

14. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

causing, based on the one or more video display parameters, the second video frame to be displayed on the display screen associated with the remote control device.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the alert graphic element is displayed on the display screen as being overlaid on the second video frame.

16. A method of latency detection in remote control displays, the method comprising:

receiving, by a remote control device from a host computing device, a first video frame comprising first video data captured by a target device and first metadata indicating when the first video data was received by the host computing device;

determining, by the remote control device, a first time corresponding to receipt of the first video frame by the remote control device;

causing, based on one or more video display parameters, the first video frame to be displayed on a display screen associated with the remote control device;

receiving, by the remote control device from the host computing device, a second video frame comprising second video data captured by the target device and second metadata indicating when the second video data was received by the host computing device;

determining, by the remote control device, a second time corresponding to receipt of the second video frame, wherein the second time is chronologically later than the first time;

determining, by the remote control device based on the first time and the second time, a latency in communication between the remote control device and the target device;

extracting, by the remote control device from the first video frame and the second video frame, the first metadata and the second metadata to evaluate communication between the host computing device and the remote control device;

determining a first duration of time between when the first video data was received by the host computing device and when the second video data was received by the host computing device using the first metadata and the second metadata;

determining a second duration of time between the first time corresponding to the receipt of the first video frame by the remote control device and the second time;

identifying, based on a comparison between the first duration of time and the second duration of time, normal communication between the host computing device and the remote control device;

transmitting, by the remote control device to the host computing device, an alert message indicating the latency in communication between the remote control device and the target device;

receiving, from the host computing device, a command message via an application program interface associated with the remote control device, the command message identifying an alert graphic element; and

causing the alert graphic element to be displayed on the display screen associated with the remote control device, wherein the alert graphic element indicates the latency in communication between the remote control device and the target device.

17. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

receiving, by the remote control device via a control interface, an input corresponding to a requested movement of the target system; and

causing, by the remote control device via the host computing device, the requested movement of the target system.
