Abstract

Methods for manufacturing improved free-swinging hammermill hammer configurations are disclosed and described and include hammers of a lightweight and efficient design. The improved hammers can be arranged in clusters. The free-swinging hammermill hammer configurations are for comminution of materials such as grain and refuse. The hammer configurations of the present disclosure are adaptable to most hammer mill or grinders having free-swinging systems. The improved configurations improve installing, removing, and cleaning hammer components within the hammermill. Additionally, the hammer configurations of the present disclosure improve the overall efficiency of the hammermill during operation.

Claims (32)

1. A rotatable hammermill assembly comprising:

a hammer comprising:

a planar hammer body comprising:

a first end; and

a second end for contact and delivery of momentum to material to be comminuted;

side edges extending from the first end to the second end;

a weld hardened edge attached to the second end;

a rod hole passing through the planar hammer body, the rod hole having an elongated cavity extending therefrom;

collinear apertures to provide relief to the hammer body during operation of the rotatable hammermill assembly; and

at least one elongated slot collinearly located between at least two of the collinear apertures.

2. The rotatable hammermill assembly of claim 1 wherein the side edges of the hammer are curved.

3. The rotatable hammermill assembly of claim 2 wherein the side edges of the hammer include one or more vertices.

4. The rotatable hammermill assembly of claim 3 wherein the one or more vertices of the hammer are staggered with respect to the collinear apertures.

5. The rotatable hammermill assembly of claim 1 wherein the rod hole of the hammer is key-shaped.

6. The rotatable hammermill assembly of claim 1 wherein the hammer is non-forged.

7. The rotatable hammermill assembly of claim 1 wherein the collinear apertures of the hammer are circular.

8. The rotatable hammermill assembly of claim 1 wherein the weld-hardened edge of the hammer covers a portion of each side edge of the side edges toward the second end.

9. The rotatable hammermill assembly of claim 1 wherein the planar hammer body is symmetric with respect to a width of the planar hammer body so that the planar hammer body is mirrored about a longitudinal axis traversing the collinear apertures and the at least one elongated slot.

10. The rotatable hammermill assembly of claim 1 wherein the first end of the hammer is curved.

11. The rotatable hammermill assembly of claim 10 wherein the first end of the hammer is semi-circularly shaped.

12. The rotatable hammermill assembly of claim 1 wherein the weld-hardened edge of the hammer comprises tungsten carbide.

13. The rotatable hammermill assembly of claim 1 wherein the planar hammer body is heat-treated for increased hardness.

14. The rotatable hammermill assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a cluster of hammers comprising:

the hammer and a second hammer, and

one or more ins attaching the hammer and the second hammer to one another.

15. The rotatable hammermill assembly of claim 14 wherein the one or more pins include upper and lower pins so as to stabilize the cluster of hammers.

16. The rotatable hammermill assembly of claim 14 wherein the second hammer has a distinct collinear aperture configuration.

17. The rotatable hammermill assembly of claim 14 wherein the hammer and the second hammer have distinct shapes from one another at their proximate ends.

18. The rotatable hammermill assembly of claim 14 , further comprising:

a hammermill rod upon which the cluster of hammers and a second cluster of hammers is arranged in a row.

19. The rotatable hammermill assembly of claim 18 further comprising spacers located between the cluster of hammers and the second cluster of hammers.

20. A method of manufacturing a hammer according to claim 1 comprising casting the planar hammer body with molten iron or molten steel.
