Abstract

A track assembly includes a frame configured to be coupled to a chassis of a vehicle, a first wheel and a second wheel each pivotally coupled to the frame, a track engaging the first wheel and the second wheel, and a motor coupled to the track and the frame. The track extends along a track path that surrounds the first wheel and the second wheel. The motor is configured to drive the first wheel such that the track moves along the track path. The motor and the first wheel are aligned.

Claims (22)

1. A track assembly, comprising:

a frame configured to be coupled to a chassis of a vehicle;

a first wheel and a second wheel each pivotally coupled to the frame;

a track engaging the first wheel and the second wheel, wherein the track extends along a track path that surrounds the first wheel and the second wheel;

a motor coupled to the track and the frame, wherein the motor is configured to drive the first wheel such that the track moves along the track path, and wherein the motor and the first wheel are aligned; and

a planetary gear set coupling the motor to the first wheel, wherein the first wheel, the motor, and the planetary gear set are aligned.

2. The track assembly of claim 1 , wherein the motor includes a motor body and a motor shaft, wherein the planetary gear set includes a sun gear, a ring gear, a plurality of planet gears coupling the sun gear to the ring gear, and a carrier supporting the planet gears, wherein the ring gear is coupled to the motor body, and wherein the sun gear is coupled to the motor shaft.

3. The track assembly of claim 2 , wherein the planetary gear set is a first planetary gear set, the sun gear is a first sun gear, the ring gear is a first ring gear, the planet gears are first planet gears, and the carrier is a first carrier, further comprising a second planetary gear set including a second sun gear, a second ring gear, a plurality of second planet gears coupling the second sun gear to the second ring gear, and a second carrier supporting the second planet gears, wherein the first ring gear is coupled to the second ring gear, and wherein the second carrier is coupled to the first wheel.

4. The track assembly of claim 3 , further comprising a clutch selectively coupling the second sun gear to the first carrier.

5. The track assembly of claim 4 , further comprising a first pin coupling the motor to the frame and a second pin coupling the second planetary gear set to the frame, wherein the first pin and the second pin are aligned with the first wheel, and wherein the second pin engages the second sun gear.

6. The track assembly of claim 3 , wherein the first planetary gear set, the second planetary gear set, and the motor each extend within the first wheel.

7. A track assembly, comprising:

a frame configured to be coupled to a chassis of a vehicle;

a first wheel and a second wheel each pivotally coupled to the frame;

a track engaging the first wheel and the second wheel, wherein the track extends along a track path that surrounds the first wheel and the second wheel; and

a motor coupled to the track and the frame, wherein the motor is configured to drive the first wheel such that the track moves along the track path, and wherein the motor and the first wheel are aligned, wherein the motor is an electric motor, and wherein the motor extends within the first wheel.

8. The track assembly of claim 7 , further comprising a planetary gear set coupling the motor to the first wheel, wherein the first wheel, the motor, and the planetary gear set are aligned.

9. The track assembly of claim 8 , wherein the motor includes a motor body and a motor shaft, wherein the planetary gear set includes a sun gear, a ring gear, a plurality of planet gears coupling the sun gear to the ring gear, and a carrier supporting the planet gears, wherein the ring gear is coupled to the motor body, and wherein the sun gear is coupled to the motor shaft.

10. The track assembly of claim 9 , wherein the planetary gear set is a first planetary gear set, the sun gear is a first sun gear, the ring gear is a first ring gear, the planet gears are first planet gears, and the carrier is a first carrier, further comprising a second planetary gear set including a second sun gear, a second ring gear, a plurality of second planet gears coupling the second sun gear to the second ring gear, and a second carrier supporting the second planet gears, wherein the first ring gear is coupled to the second ring gear, and wherein the second carrier is coupled to the first wheel.

11. The track assembly of claim 10 , further comprising a clutch selectively coupling the second sun gear to the first carrier.

12. The track assembly of claim 11 , further comprising a first pin coupling the motor to the frame and a second pin coupling the second planetary gear set to the frame, wherein the first pin and the second pin are aligned with the first wheel, and wherein the second pin engages the second sun gear.

13. The track assembly of claim 10 , wherein the first planetary gear set, the second planetary gear set, and the motor each extend within the first wheel.
