Abstract

A system and method for presenting video asset information to a viewer to assist the view in selecting a video asset for viewing is described. The video assets can be available from a plurality of different video asset sources, such as VOD (video on demand), PVR (personal video recorders) and broadcast (including over the air, cable, and satellite). Images from the video assets are displayed in a uniform manner, along with information about the video assets. The information includes data in a metadata category. The view can select one of the video assets for viewing, but also can navigate using metadata categories such as genre, actors, director etc. Moreover, the system and method includes an on-screen remote control that can be utilized in conjunction with a physical input device for navigation and viewing one or more video assets. This allows a much easier and natural navigating and selection process for viewers.

Claims (62)

1. A method comprising:

receiving, at a server, first customized metadata from a content portion of a video asset from a plurality of video assets from a plurality of video asset sources;

receiving, at the server, second customized metadata that relates to the content portion of the video asset;

in response to determining, by the server, that the second customized metadata is associated with the first customized metadata of the video asset from the plurality of video assets, storing in a database an association linking the second customized metadata to the video asset;

storing in the database an indicator of a source of the video asset, the source being one of the plurality of video asset sources; and

generating for display on a display device a display screen including:

a selectable link including the association linking the first customized metadata, the second customized metadata, and the video asset; and

a symbol corresponding to the indicator of the source of the video asset,

wherein the display screen simultaneously presents the plurality of video asset sources comprising a video-on-demand source, a currently showing source, a personal video recorder source, and a future broadcast video asset source, and

wherein the respective symbol is unique to each source.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

automatically searching a match between the second customized metadata and native metadata of a second video asset of the plurality of video assets; and

in response to the server determining the match between the second customized metadata and the native metadata of the second video asset, attaching the second customized metadata to the second video asset.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, at the server, programming data related to the plurality of video assets over a network from at least one source of the plurality of video asset sources;

causing display of a plurality of links associated with the plurality of video assets available from the plurality of video asset sources; and

in response to a selection of one of the plurality of links, performing an action appropriate for the video asset source corresponding to the selected video asset.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising combining the first customized metadata and the second customized metadata and storing the combined metadata as associated with the video asset.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving, at the server, first customized metadata from a content portion of a video asset comprises:

automatically extracting, by the server, metadata from the content portion of the video asset,

wherein the automatic extraction of the first customized metadata is performed by inspecting closed captioning information.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving, at the server, first customized metadata from a content portion of a video asset comprises:

automatically extracting, by the server, metadata from the content portion of the video asset,

wherein the automatic extraction of the first customized metadata is performed by pattern recognition to determine a genre associated with the video asset.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving, at the server, first customized metadata from a content portion of a video asset comprises:

automatically extracting, by the server, metadata from the content portion of the video asset,

wherein the automatic extraction of the first customized metadata results in character recognition of cast within the video asset.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second customized metadata is received from a user interface.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the user interface can be used to add or delete the second customized metadata to the video asset.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second customized metadata relates to a topic of user interest.

11. A system comprising:

communication circuitry configured to access a database containing a plurality of video assets from a plurality of video asset sources; and

control circuitry configured to:

receive first customized metadata from a content portion of a video asset from the plurality of video assets;

receive second customized metadata that relates to the content portion of the video asset;

in response to determining that the second customized metadata is associated with the first customized metadata of the video asset from the plurality of video assets, store in a database an association linking the second customized metadata to the video asset; and

store in the database an indicator of a source of the video asset, the source being one of the plurality of video asset sources; and

generating for display on a display device a display screen including:

a selectable link including the association linking the first customized metadata, the second customized metadata, and the video asset; and

a symbol corresponding to the indicator of the source of the video asset,

wherein the display screen simultaneously presents the plurality of video asset sources comprising a video-on-demand source, a currently showing source, a personal video recorder source, and a future broadcast video asset source, and

wherein the respective symbol is unique to each source.

12. The system of claim 11 , further comprising:

automatically searching a match between the second customized metadata and native metadata of a second video asset of the plurality of video assets; and

in response to the server determining the match between the second customized metadata and the native metadata of the second video asset, attaching the second customized metadata to the second video asset.

13. The system of claim 11 , further comprising:

receiving, at the server, programming data related to the plurality of video assets over a network from at least one source of the plurality of video asset sources;

causing display of a plurality of links associated with the plurality of video assets available from the plurality of video asset sources; and

in response to a selection of one of the plurality of links, performing an action appropriate for the video asset source corresponding to the selected video asset.

14. The system of claim 11 , further comprising combining the first customized metadata and the second customized metadata and storing the combined metadata as associated with the video asset.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein receiving, at the server, first customized metadata from a content portion of a video asset comprises:

automatically extracting, by the server, metadata from the content portion of the video asset,

wherein the automatic extraction of the first customized metadata is performed by inspecting closed captioning information.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein receiving, at the server, first customized metadata from a content portion of a video asset comprises:

automatically extracting, by the server, metadata from the content portion of the video asset,

wherein the automatic extraction of the first customized metadata is performed by pattern recognition to determine a genre associated with the video asset.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein receiving, at the server, first customized metadata from a content portion of a video asset comprises:

automatically extracting, by the server, metadata from the content portion of the video asset,

wherein the automatic extraction of the first customized metadata results in character recognition of cast within the video asset.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the second customized metadata is received from a user interface.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the user interface can be used to add or delete the second customized metadata to the video asset.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein the second customized metadata relates to a topic of user interest.
