Abstract

A rack and system for cooling computing devices such as in a data center is disclosed. In one embodiment, the rack supports computing devices and comprises planar annular sector or trapezoidal shelves, each having one or more positions for holding computing devices. The rack may be configured to be connected to other similar racks to form a vertical geometric prism or annular cylinder, which may be tapered, and the computing devices may be installed to discharge exhaust at an angle. A number of vertical supports may hold the shelves in a vertically spaced arrangement to from a helix within the prism or cylinder. An air barrier may be affixed to the rack and have openings permitting exhaust air to flow from the computing devices through the air barrier. The helix formed by the shelves may channel the airflow generated by the computing devices into a vortex to improve cooling.

Claims (32)

1. A rack for supporting a plurality of computing devices, the rack comprising:

a plurality of planar shelves, wherein each of the plurality of planar shelves has one or more positions for holding a computing device of said plurality of computing devices; and

an air barrier affixed to the rack and having an opening for each of said plurality of computing devices to exhaust hot air through;

wherein the rack is configured to be connected to other racks to form a vertical geometric prism;

wherein each of the plurality of planar shelves is offset vertically from each other; and

wherein the plurality of planar shelves form a helix.

2. The rack of claim 1 , wherein the helix is configured to create a vortex within the vertical geometric prism from air drawn into said plurality of computing devices.

3. The rack of claim 1 , wherein the helix is configured to create a vortex within the vertical geometric prism from air exhausted by said plurality of computing devices.

4. The rack of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of planar shelves are annular sectors.

5. The rack of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of planar shelves are trapezoidal.

6. The rack of claim 1 , wherein the air barrier forms an inside surface of the vertical geometric prism.

7. The rack of claim 6 , wherein said plurality of computing devices are configured to exhaust the hot air into an inside of the vertical geometric prism.

8. The rack of claim 1 , wherein said plurality of computing devices are positioned to exhaust the hot air at an angle relative perpendicular.

9. The rack of claim 1 , wherein the vertical geometric prism is a rectangular prism.

10. The rack of claim 1 , wherein the vertical geometric prism is a cylindrical prism.

11. The rack of claim 1 , wherein the vertical geometric prism is tapered.

12. The rack of claim 1 , further comprising an air duct configured to deliver air to the bottom of the vertical geometric prism.

13. The rack of claim 12 , further comprising a fan connected to force the air through the air duct.

14. A system for cooling a plurality of computing devices in a data center, the system comprising:

a plurality of shelves, wherein each of the plurality of shelves has a plurality of positions for holding one or more of said plurality of computing devices;

a cylindrical air barrier having an airflow opening for each of said plurality of computing devices on the plurality of shelves; and

a plurality of supports configured to hold the plurality of shelves in a vertically-spaced arrangement forming a helix inside the cylindrical air barrier.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the helix is configured to form a vortex from airflow created in the cylindrical air barrier by said plurality of computing devices on the plurality of shelves.

16. The system of claim 14 , wherein said plurality of computing devices are configured to exhaust air to an outside of the cylindrical air barrier through the airflow openings.

17. The system of claim 14 , further comprising an air duct within the cylindrical air barrier delivering cool air from above the cylindrical air barrier to the bottom of the cylindrical air barrier.

18. The system of claim 17 , further comprising a fan connected to the air duct and configured to force the cool air through the air duct.

19. The system of claim 17 , wherein each computing device of said plurality of computing devices comprises one or more cooling fans and one or more temperature sensors; and

wherein the system further comprises a management server connected to the computing devices via a network and configured to dynamically adjust each of the one or more cooling fans of each computing device of said plurality of computing devices based on readings from the one or more temperature sensors.

20. A rack for supporting a plurality of computing devices, the rack comprising:

a plurality of planar shelves, wherein each of the plurality of planar shelves has one or more positions for holding a computing device of said plurality of computing devices and is an annular sector or a trapezoid; and

a plurality of vertical supports configured to hold the plurality of planar shelves in a vertically spaced helix-like arrangement;

wherein the rack is configured to be connected to other racks to form a geometric prism with an internal helix formed by the plurality of planar shelves.
