Abstract

An apparatus and methods are provided for an air cleaner to be mounted onto an air inlet of an internal combustion engine. The air cleaner comprises an air filter that includes a filter medium disposed between a curved base and a cover. The curved base provides an interface between the air filter and the air inlet, and comprises a shape that provides clearance between the curved base and an electric choke installed onto a carburetor comprising the air inlet. The cover secures the air filter and the curved base to the air inlet such that an airstream is drawn through the filter medium and is conducted into the air inlet. A raised portion of the cover is configured to cooperate with the curved base to ensure a desired volume of the airstream is available to the air inlet at substantially all engine speeds.

Claims (23)

1. An air cleaner for an internal combustion engine, comprising:

a filter medium for filtering an airstream;

a curved base including a curved portion for coupling the filter medium with an air inlet wherein the curved portion is configured to provide clearance for at least an electric choke that may be disposed near the air inlet; and

a cover for causing the airstream to pass through the filter medium.

2. The air cleaner of claim 1 , wherein the filter medium is disposed between a first end cap and a second end cap.

3. The air cleaner of claim 2 , wherein the filter medium, the first end cap, and the second end cap comprise an air filter for being disposed between the curved base and the cover.

4. The air cleaner of claim 1 , wherein the cover is configured to secure the filter medium and the curved base to the air inlet.

5. The air cleaner of claim 1 , wherein the curved base includes an inlet receiver for being coupled with the air inlet.

6. The air cleaner of claim 5 , wherein the curved base includes a curved portion extending from the inlet receiver.

7. The air cleaner of claim 6 , wherein the curved portion includes a cross-sectional shaped comprising a compound-curve.

8. The air cleaner of claim 7 , wherein the compound-curve comprises two or more tangent curves that each includes a unique radius of curvature.

9. The air cleaner of claim 5 , wherein the curved base includes a peripheral flat portion for being coupled with the filter medium.

10. The air cleaner of claim 9 , wherein the peripheral flat portion comprises a horizontal surface that cooperates with the cover to cause the airstream to be drawn through the filter medium.

11. The air cleaner of claim 1 , wherein the cover is a raised portion configured to provide clearance between the cover and the curved based.

12. The air cleaner of claim 11 , wherein the cover includes a peripheral flat portion that surrounds the raised portion.

13. The air cleaner of claim 12 , wherein the peripheral flat portion comprises a horizontal surface that cooperates with the curved base to cause the airstream to be drawn through the filter medium.

14. A method for an air cleaner for an internal combustion engine, comprising:

providing a filter medium for filtering an airstream;

configuring a curved base for coupling the filter medium with an air inlet wherein configuring the curved base includes configuring a curved portion to provide clearance for at least an electric choke that may be disposed near the air inlet; and

forming a cover for causing the airstream to pass through the filter medium.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein providing includes obtaining an air filter comprising the filter medium disposed between a first end cap and a second end cap.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein forming the cover includes forming a raised portion to provide clearance between the cover and the curved base.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein forming the raised portion includes providing enough clearance to allow a desired volume of the airstream to enter the air inlet at substantially all engine speeds.
