Abstract

Systems, devices, and methods for streaming media content over a network are provided. One exemplary method of streaming media content over a network involves transmitting one or more portions of the media content to a client device via a delivery route between a content delivery source and the network, determining a performance metric associated with the transmitting of the one or more portions via the delivery route, and dynamically adjusting the delivery route between the content delivery source and the network based at least in part on the performance metric.

Claims (42)

1. A non-transitory computer readable-medium comprising computer-executable instructions stored thereon that, when executed by a processing system, cause the processing system to:

obtain, at a remote storage digital video recorder (RS-DVR) system, media content corresponding to a live event;

transmit one or more portions of the media content corresponding to the live event from the RS-DVR system to a client device using a first delivery route to the client device, the first delivery route comprising a first backbone provider network of a plurality of different backbone provider networks; and

thereafter transmit a subsequent portion of the media content corresponding to the live event from the RS-DVR system to the client device using a different delivery route to the client device instead of the first backbone provider network, the different delivery route comprising an alternative backbone provider network of the plurality of different backbone provider networks.

2. The non-transitory computer readable-medium of claim 1 , wherein the computer-executable instructions cause the processing system to:

create a shared access rights content file comprising encoded media segments corresponding to the media content of the live event at the RS-DVR system;

transmit the one or more portions of the encoded media segments corresponding to the media content from the shared access rights content file using the first delivery route; and

transmit the subsequent portion of the encoded media segments corresponding to the media content from the shared access rights content file using the different delivery route.

3. The non-transitory computer readable-medium of claim 1 , wherein the computer-executable instructions cause the processing system to create a content file comprising encoded media segments corresponding to the media content of the live event in a temporary data storage at the RS-DVR system.

4. The non-transitory computer readable-medium of claim 3 , wherein the temporary data storage comprises a first in, first out (FIFO) buffer.

5. The non-transitory computer readable-medium of claim 3 , wherein the encoded media segments do not persist at the RS-DVR system beyond a certain point in time.

6. The non-transitory computer readable-medium of claim 3 , wherein the encoded media segments comprise only a most recent amount of the media content.

7. The non-transitory computer readable-medium of claim 1 , wherein the computer-executable instructions cause the processing system to:

create a per-subscriber access rights content file comprising encoded media segments corresponding to the media content of the live event at the RS-DVR system;

transmit the one or more portions of the encoded media segments corresponding to the media content from the per-subscriber access rights content file using the first delivery route; and

transmit the subsequent portion of the encoded media segments corresponding to the media content from the per-subscriber access rights content file using the different delivery route.

The non-transitory computer readable-medium of claim 1 , wherein the computer-executable instructions cause the processing system to determine a difference between a current utilization of backhaul bandwidth by the RS-DVR system and an allocated amount of backhaul bandwidth associated with the RS-DVR system exceeds a threshold prior to transmitting the one or more portions of the media content.

9. The non-transitory computer readable-medium of claim 1 , wherein the computer-executable instructions cause the processing system to:

record, from an origin content server or live stream encoder, one or more encoded media segments corresponding to the media content of the live event at a time of a request from a media player at the client device; and

transmit the one or more encoded media segments corresponding to the media content of the live event at the time of the request to the media player using the first delivery route.

The non-transitory computer readable-medium of claim 1 , wherein the computer-executable instructions cause the processing system to instruct a networking component coupled between the RS-DVR system and the plurality of different backbone provider networks to transmit the subsequent portion of the media content to the client device via the alternative backbone provider network.

11. The non-transitory computer readable-medium of claim 1 , wherein the computer-executable instructions cause the processing system to identify the alternative backbone provider network when the first backbone provider network fails to achieve a desired level of performance.

12. The non-transitory computer readable-medium of claim 1 , wherein the computer-executable instructions cause the processing system to transmit the subsequent portion using a modified transport layer protocol.

13. The non-transitory computer readable-medium of claim 1 , wherein the computer-executable instructions cause the processing system to receive download performance metrics from the client device and determine whether to alter the first delivery route based on the download performance metrics.

14. The non-transitory computer readable-medium of claim 1 , wherein the computer-executable instructions cause the processing system to identify the different delivery route in response to a request from a media player at the client device.

15. The non-transitory computer readable-medium of claim 1 , wherein the computer-executable instructions cause the processing system to randomly select the different delivery route.

The non-transitory computer readable-medium of claim 1 , the first delivery route comprising a default delivery route, wherein the computer-executable instructions cause the processing system to subsequently revert to the default delivery route after transmitting the subsequent portion using the different delivery route when no potential delivery routes are capable of performing at a desired level.

17. The non-transitory computer readable-medium of claim 1 , wherein the computer-executable instructions cause the processing system to:

store the media content at the RS-DVR system at a plurality of different bitrates;

determine a bandwidth associated with the transmitting of the one or more portions via the first delivery route; and

identify the different delivery route by selecting the alternative backbone provider network when the bandwidth is less than a threshold for streaming the media content at a lowest available bitrate of the plurality of different bitrates.

18. The non-transitory computer readable-medium of claim 1 , wherein the media content corresponding to the live event is anchored to a particular point in time for playback according to a schedule of the live event.

19. A device comprising:

a processing system; and

a data storage element to store computer-executable instructions that, when executed by the processing system, cause the processing system to:

record, at a remote storage digital video recorder (RS-DVR) system, media content corresponding to a live event from an origin content server or live stream encoder, wherein the media content is anchored to a particular point in time for playback according to a schedule of the live event;

transmit one or more portions of the media content from the RS-DVR system to a client device using a first delivery route to the client device, the first delivery route comprising a first backbone provider network of a plurality of different backbone provider networks; and

thereafter transmit a subsequent portion of the media content from the RS-DVR system to the client device using a different delivery route to the client device instead of the first backbone provider network, the different delivery route comprising an alternative backbone provider network of the plurality of different backbone provider networks.

20. A method comprising:

recording, at a remote storage digital video recorder (RS-DVR) system, media content corresponding to a live event from an origin content server or live stream encoder, wherein the media content is anchored to a particular point in time for playback according to a schedule of the live event;

transmitting one or more portions of the media content corresponding to the live event from the RS-DVR system to a client device using a first delivery route to the client device, the first delivery route comprising a first backbone provider network of a plurality of different backbone provider networks; and

thereafter transmitting a subsequent portion of the media content corresponding to the live event from the RS-DVR system to the client device using a different delivery route to the client device instead of the first backbone provider network, the different delivery route comprising an alternative backbone provider network of the plurality of different backbone provider networks.
