Abstract

The present disclosure relates to systems and methods for increasing messaging activity in a messaging system. Using the interactions of users with each other and/or with the messaging system, the disclosed systems and methods can predict how likely a pairing of two or more users are to engage in a highly active messaging thread. Based on this prediction, the disclosed methods and systems can, for example, more effectively organize contact lists and conduct promotional efforts associated with messaging features.

Claims (60)

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

determining, by one or more servers, that a messaging thread is a highly active messaging thread based on a threshold activity requirement for highly active messaging threads;

generating, by the one or more servers, an activity score for a pair of users representing a likelihood that a first user of the pair of users and a second user of the pair of users will engage in the highly active messaging thread;

determining, based on the activity score, a messaging feature to promote for the first user to communicate with the second user utilizing the messaging feature within the highly active messaging thread; and

providing, based on determining the messaging feature, a selectable messaging feature element corresponding to the messaging feature for display via a client device of the first user.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein determining the messaging feature to promote comprises:

determining, from profile information within a social networking system, an event associated with one or more of the first user or the second user; and

selecting a messaging feature specific to the event as the messaging feature to promote for the first user to communicate with the second user.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein determining the messaging feature to promote comprises:

identifying a previous messaging feature that the first user has used in past messaging threads; and

selecting the previous messaging feature as the messaging feature to promote for the first user to communicate with the second user.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein:

providing the selectable messaging feature element for display comprises providing the selectable messaging feature element for display via the client device of the first user and not providing the selectable messaging feature element to other client devices associated with other pairs of users within a social networking system.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the messaging thread is a highly active messaging thread comprises determining that the messaging thread includes a threshold number of messages exchanged within a particular time period.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein generating the activity score comprises determining a probability that the first user and the second user will interact within the messaging thread based on prior interactions between the first user and the second user; and

further comprising determining that the activity score between the first user and the second user satisfies an activity score threshold.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving an indication of user selection of the selectable messaging feature element from the client device of the first user;

determining, based on the user selection of the selectable messaging feature element, that the messaging feature did not increase messaging activity between the first user and the second user; and

selecting, based on determining that the messaging feature did not increase messaging activity, a second messaging feature to promote for the first user to communicate with the second user utilizing the second messaging feature.

8. A system comprising:

at least one processor; and

at least one non-transitory computer readable medium comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:

determine, by one or more servers, that a messaging thread is a highly active messaging thread based on a threshold activity requirement for highly active messaging threads;

generate, by the one or more servers, an activity score for a pair of users representing a likelihood that a first user of the pair of users and a second user of the pair of users will engage in the highly active messaging thread;

determine, based on the activity score, a messaging feature to promote for the first user to communicate with the second user utilizing the messaging feature within the highly active messaging thread; and

provide, based on determining the messaging feature, a selectable messaging feature element corresponding to the messaging feature for display via a client device of the first user.

9. The system of claim 8 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to determine the messaging feature to promote by:

determining, from profile information within a social networking system, an event associated with one or more of the first user or the second user; and

selecting a messaging feature specific to the event as the messaging feature to promote for the first user to communicate with the second user.

10. The system of claim 8 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to determine the messaging feature to promote by:

identifying a previous messaging feature that the first user has used in past messaging threads; and

selecting the previous messaging feature as the messaging feature to promote for the first user to communicate with the second user.

11. The system of claim 8 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:

provide the selectable messaging feature element for display by providing the selectable messaging feature element for display via the client device of the first user and not providing the selectable messaging feature element to other client devices associated with other pairs of users within a social networking system.

The system of claim 8 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to determine that the messaging thread is a highly active messaging thread by determining that the messaging thread includes a threshold number of messages exchanged within a particular time period.

13. The system of claim 8 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:

generate the activity score by determining a probability that the first user and the second user will interact within the messaging thread based on prior interactions between the first user and the second user; and

determine that the activity score between the first user and the second user satisfies an activity score threshold.

14. The system of claim 8 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:

receive an indication of user selection of the selectable messaging feature element from the client device of the first user;

determine, based on the user selection of the selectable messaging feature element, that the messaging feature did not increase messaging activity between the first user and the second user; and

select, based on determining that the messaging feature did not increase messaging activity, a second messaging feature to promote for the first user to communicate with the second user utilizing the second messaging feature.

15. A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause a computing device to:

determine, by one or more servers, that a messaging thread is a highly active messaging thread based on a threshold activity requirement for highly active messaging threads;

generate, by the one or more servers, an activity score for a pair of users representing a likelihood that a first user of the pair of users and a second user of the pair of users will engage in the highly active messaging thread;

determine, based on the activity score, a messaging feature to promote for the first user to communicate with the second user utilizing the messaging feature within the highly active messaging thread; and

provide, based on determining the messaging feature, a selectable messaging feature element corresponding to the messaging feature for display via a client device of the first user.

16. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the computing device to determine the messaging feature to promote by:

determining, from profile information within a social networking system, an event associated with one or more of the first user or the second user; and

selecting a messaging feature specific to the event as the messaging feature to promote for the first user to communicate with the second user.

17. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the computing device to determine the messaging feature to promote by:

identifying a previous messaging feature that the first user has used in past messaging threads; and

selecting the previous messaging feature as the messaging feature to promote for the first user to communicate with the second user.

18. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the computing device to:

provide the selectable messaging feature element for display by providing the selectable messaging feature element for display via the client device of the first user and not providing the selectable messaging feature element to other client devices associated with other pairs of users within a social networking system.

The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the computing device to determine that the messaging thread is a highly active messaging thread by determining that the messaging thread includes a threshold number of messages exchanged within a particular time period.

20. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the computing device to:

generate the activity score by determining a probability that the first user and the second user will interact within the messaging thread based on prior interactions between the first user and the second user; and

determine that the activity score between the first user and the second user satisfies an activity score threshold.
