Abstract

A media device and methods that identify playback states reachable from a current content playback state and identify a reachable state that is likely to occur, are disclosed. A memory associated with the media device may receive frames that enable a smooth transition between the playback state and the reachable state. The media device may receive frames that correspond to points in the content that are separated by an amount of time that is proportional to the playback rate of the likely state. The frames may be frames corresponding to an image that may be played back at the playback rate of the likely state.

Claims (62)

1. A method comprising:

generating a content for display on a media device;

identifying a first probability of the media device entering a first possible next playing state and a second probability of the media device entering a second possible next playing state;

in response to determining that the first probability of the media device entering the first possible next playing state is higher than the second probability of the media device entering the second possible next playing state:

sending a first request for a first set of frames for the first possible next playing state; and

sending a second request for a second set of frames for the second possible next playing state, wherein the first set of frames for the first possible next playing state is larger than the second set of frames for the second possible next playing state.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the first possible next playing state is a rewind state; and

the second possible next playing state is a fast-forward state.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the first possible next playing state is a fast-forward state; and

the second possible next playing state is a rewind state.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

storing the first set of frames for the first possible next playing state; and

storing the second set of frames for the second possible next playing state.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein:

the storing the first set of frames comprises storing the first set of frames in a buffer of the media device; and

the storing the second set of frames comprises storing the second set of frames in the buffer of the media device.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein, more buffer memory is allocated for storing the first set of frames for the first possible next playing state than for storing the second set of frames for the second possible next playing state.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first probability is based on playback location of the content.

8. A system comprising:

a processing circuitry configured to:

generate a content for display on a media device; and

identifying a first probability of the media device entering a first possible next playing state and a second probability of the media device entering a second possible next playing state; and

networking circuitry configured to:

in response to determining that the first probability of the media device entering the first possible next playing state is higher than the second probability of the media device entering the second possible next playing state:

send a first request for a first set of frames for the first possible next playing state; and

send a second request for a second set of frames for the second possible next playing state, wherein the first set of frames for the first possible next playing state is larger than the second set of frames for the second possible next playing state.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein:

the first possible next playing state is a rewind state; and

the second possible next playing state is a fast-forward state.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein:

the first possible next playing state is a fast-forward state; and

the second possible next playing state is a rewind state.

11. The system of claim 8 , further comprising:

a storage configured to:

store the first set of frames for the first possible next playing state; and

store the second set of frames for the second possible next playing state.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the storage is configured to:

store the first set of frames by storing the first set of frames in a buffer of the media device; and

store the second set of frames by storing the second set of frames in the buffer of the media device.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the storage is configured to allocate more buffer memory for storing the first set of frames for the first possible next playing state than for storing the second set of frames for the second possible next playing state.

14. The system of claim 8 , wherein the first probability is based on playback location of the content.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having instructions encoded thereon that when executed by a processing circuitry cause the processing circuitry to:

generate a content for display on a media device;

identify a first probability of the media device entering a first possible next playing state and a second probability of the media device entering a second possible next playing state;

in response to determining that the first probability of the media device entering the first possible next playing state is higher than the second probability of the media device entering the second possible next playing state:

send a first request for a first set of frames for the first possible next playing state; and

send a second request for a second set of frames for the second possible next playing state, wherein the first set of frames for the first possible next playing state is larger than the second set of frames for the second possible next playing state.

16. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , wherein:

the first possible next playing state is a rewind state; and

the second possible next playing state is a fast-forward state.

17. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , wherein:

the first possible next playing state is a fast-forwarding state; and

the second possible next playing state is a rewind state.

18. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the instructions further cause the processing circuitry to:

store the first set of frames for the first possible next playing state; and

store the second set of frames for the second possible next playing state.

19. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 18 , wherein:

the storing the first set of frames comprises storing the first set of frames in a buffer of the media device; and

the storing the second set of frames comprises storing the second set of frames in the buffer of the media device.

20. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 19 , wherein the instructions further cause the processing circuitry to allocate more buffer memory for storing the first set of frames for the first possible next playing state than for storing the second set of frames for the second possible next playing state.
