Abstract

Systems and methods are described for a media guidance application (e.g., implemented on a user device) that improves quality of service while streaming code-agnostic content by optimizing buffering based on bit rate.

Claims (45)

1. A method comprising:

receiving a first indication indicating that a first content type is preferably viewed at a first bit rate;

receiving a second indication indicating that a second content type is preferably viewed at a second bit rate that is greater than the first bit rate;

receiving a request for a content item, wherein a first portion of the content item occurs before a second portion of the content item and the second portion occurs before a third portion of the content item;

determining, based on metadata of the content item, that a type of the second portion is the first content type and a type of the third portion is the second content type;

determining whether current bandwidth conditions support buffering additional portion of the content item while the first portion is generated for display; and

in response to the determining, based on metadata of the content item, that the type of the second portion is the first content type and the type of the third portion is the second content type and the determining that the bandwidth conditions support buffering additional portion of the content item:

while the first portion is generated for display, buffering the third portion prior to buffering of the second portion.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first indication and the second indication are received from a user device.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first indication and the second indication are received prior to receiving the request for the content item.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the buffering the third portion prior to buffering of the second portion is performed in response to determining that current bandwidth conditions support transmitting the third portion while the first portion is generated for display.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the first bit rate is based on maintaining a predetermined minimum video resolution during display of the second portion of the content item.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the predetermined minimum video resolution is determined by:

detecting a threshold number of different colors in the second portion.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second content type is an action scene.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

generating for display the second portion of the content item; and

generating for display the third portion of the content item subsequent to the second portion.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first portion is generated to be displayed on a user device.

10. A system comprising:

buffer memory for buffering content;

a processor;

input/output (I/O) circuitry configured to:

receive a first indication indicating that a first content type is preferably viewed at a first bit rate;

receive a second indication indicating that a second content type is preferably viewed at a second bit rate that is greater than the first bit rate; and

receive a request for a content item, wherein a first portion of the content item occurs before a second portion of the content item and the second portion occurs before a third portion of the content item; and

control circuitry of the processor coupled to the I/O circuitry and configured to:

determine, based on metadata of the content item, that a type of the second portion is the first content type and a type of the third portion is the second content type;

determine whether current bandwidth conditions support buffering additional portion of the content item while the first portion is generated for display; and

in response to determining, based on metadata of the content item, that the type of the second portion is the first content type and the type of the third portion is the second content type and determining that the bandwidth conditions support buffering additional portion of the content item:

while the first portion is generated for display, buffer in the buffer memory the third portion prior to buffering of the second portion.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the I/O circuitry is configured to receive the first indication and the second indication from a user device.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the I/O circuitry is configured to receive the first indication and the second indication prior to receiving the request for the content item.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to:

buffer the third portion prior to buffering of the second portion in response to determining that current bandwidth conditions support transmitting the third portion while the first portion is generated for display.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein:

the first bit rate is based on maintaining a predetermined minimum video resolution during display of the second portion of the content item.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to determine the predetermined minimum video resolution by:

detecting a threshold number of different colors in the second portion.

16. The system of claim 10 , wherein the second content type is an action scene.

17. The system of claim 10 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

generate for display the second portion of the content item; and

generate for display the third portion of the content item subsequent to the second portion.

18. The system of claim 10 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to generate the first portion to be displayed on a user device.
