Abstract

A bed system includes microclimate control capabilities for providing quality sleep experience. The bed system can include a microclimate control subsystem configured to supply conditioned air (e.g., heated or cooled air) to a mattress, or draw ambient air from the mattress, to achieve a desired temperature at the top of the mattress. Utilizing supply of conditioned air to provide air at desired temperature to the mattress system, or utilizing air suction to drain heat away from the mattress system, can provide precise microclimate control at the mattress, thereby permitting conformable sleep.

Claims (66)

in response to receiving the command, commanding the one or more air controllers to cause heated air to flow through the first climate control zone and to cause ambient air to flow through the second climate control zone, wherein adjusting a flow rate of ambient air through the second climate control zone reduces an amount of heat transferred from the first climate control zone to the second climate control zone.

2. The mattress system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors to command the one or more air controllers to cause ambient air to flow through the second climate control zone without receiving any user request to supply air through the second climate control zone.

6. The mattress system of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise:

in response to sensing a user's presence on the second climate control zone, commanding the one or more air controllers to cause a reduction of flow of heated air through the first climate control zone and to cause a reduction of flow of ambient air through the second climate control zone.

7. The mattress system of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise:

in response to sensing a user's presence on the first climate control zone, commanding the one or more air controllers to cause a stop of flow of heated air through the first climate control zone and to cause a stop of flow of ambient air through the second climate control zone.

8. The mattress system of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise:

in response to sensing a user's presence on the first climate control zone, commanding the one or more air controllers to cause a reduction of flow of heated air through the first climate control zone and to cause a reduction of flow of ambient air through the second climate control zone.

9. The mattress system of claim 1 , wherein the flow rate of ambient air through the second climate control zone is substantially less than a flow rate of heated air through the first climate control zone.

10. The mattress system of claim 1 , wherein the mattress comprises:

at least one air chamber configured to be inflated or deflated to adjust firmness of the mattress;

a first air distribution layer corresponding to the first climate control zone and configured to allow air flow through the first climate control zone; and

wherein the first air distribution layer is arranged adjacent to the second air distribution layer.

11. The mattress system of claim 10 , wherein the one or more air controllers comprise:

a first air controller being in fluid communication with the first air distribution layer; and

a second air controller being in fluid communication with the second air distribution layer.

12. A mattress system comprising:

a mattress having a first climate control zone, a second climate control zone, a third climate control zone, and a fourth climate control zone;

a first air chamber included in the mattress and configured to be inflated or deflated to adjust firmness at a first side of the mattress;

a second air chamber included in the mattress and configured to be inflated or deflated to adjust firmness at a second side of the mattress;

a first airflow pad included in the mattress and configured to allow air to flow through the first climate control zone;

a second airflow pad included in the mattress and configured to allow air to flow through the second climate control zone;

a third airflow pad included in the mattress and configured to allow air to flow through the third climate control zone;

a fourth airflow pad included in the mattress and configured to allow air to flow through the fourth climate control zone;

one or more air controllers in fluid communication with each of the first, second, third, and fourth climate control zones and configured to independently supply air to or draw air from each of the first, second, third, and fourth climate control zones;

one or more processors; and

a computer-readable storage medium coupled to the one or more processors having instructions stored thereon which, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:

commanding the one or more air controllers to operate in a first mode whereby heated or cooled air is supplied to the first climate control zone while air is simultaneously drawn from the second climate control zone;

commanding the one or more air controllers to operate in a second mode whereby heated or cooled air is supplied to the third climate control zone while air is simultaneously drawn from the fourth climate control zone; and

commanding the one or more air controllers to adjust a flow rate of the air drawn from the second climate control zone or the fourth climate control zone to reduce an interference of the heated or cooled air supplied to the first climate control zone or the third climate control zone, the interference occurring from the first climate control zone to the second climate control zone and the third climate control zone to the fourth climate control zone.

13. The mattress system of claim 12 , wherein the operations further comprise:

commanding the one or more air controllers to operate in a third mode whereby heated air is supplied to the first and third climate control zones while air is simultaneously drawn from the second and fourth climate control zones; and
