Abstract

Disclosed are can taps for dispensing fluids from containers. The can tap has a housing with an inlet and an outlet, and a pin. The pin has a flow portion in fluidic communication with the inlet and the outlet of the housing. The pin may have a blunt depressor capable of operating a valve on the container. The flow portion of the pin allows fluid to flow between the housing and the pin. The can tap may have a gasket comprising a material having a hardness that prevents deformation of the container.

Claims (27)

1. A container comprising:

a) a can top which comprises:

i. a flat annular base section with an inner peripheral edge,

ii. a male threaded tube, an open end contiguous with said inner peripheral edge, a distal end with an annular section, said annular section comprises an outer edge contiguous with said distal end, an intermediate planar section contiguous with an inner;

upwardly curved section with an inner end forming said inner peripheral edge which is spaced above an upper surface of said planar section and forms a crown which defines a first central opening,

b) an O-ring configured with upper and lower flat surfaces and defining a second central opening, said upper flat surface contiguous with said intermediate planar section and said lower flat surface defining an inner sealing surface,

c) a valve comprises: (i) a tubular wall which comprises an internally linear surface which extends between an open end directly connected to and contiguous with said inner peripheral edge, an end wall closed to flow, and openings extending through said tubular wall, (ii) a spring, and (iii) a sealing plug axially movable within said tubular wall, said plug comprises a circular protrusion at a top end and a bottom end configured for seating said spring, said plug dimensionally configured with an external circumferential surface to permit flow between said external circumferential surface and said internal linear surface wall upon depression of said plug, and

d) a can tap comprises upper and lower chambers separated by a throat section defining a third central opening, said lower chamber configured with female threads which retain an annular planar gasket defining a fourth central opening greater in dimension than said first central opening, and juxtaposed to said throat section, said can tap further comprises an actuating pin and distal depressor, said actuating pin independently movable relative to said can tap, wherein said first, second, third and fourth central openings are dimensionally configured to permit free axial movement of said depressor to engage said moveable plug.

2. The container of claim 1 where the can tap is constructed of material that comprises at least one member selected from the group consisting of stainless steel, galvanized steel, aluminum, brass, bronze, and plastic and can withstand a pressure of at least 827 kPa (120 psia).

3. The container of claim 1 , wherein the flow portion of the pin has a dimension in a first direction perpendicular to a central axis of the pin that is greater than a dimension in a second direction perpendicular to the central axis of the pin.

4. The container of claim 3 , wherein the flow portion of the pin has a dimension in a first direction perpendicular to the central axis of the pin that is at least twice as great as a dimension in a second direction perpendicular to the central axis of the pin.

5. The container of claim 4 wherein the first direction is rotated 90 degrees from the second direction.

6. The container of claim 3 , wherein the flow portion has a flattened surface that allows fluid to pass over the flattened surface between the flow portion and the housing.

7. The container of claim 1 , wherein the flow portion is rotationally symmetrical around the central axis of the pin.

8. The container of claim 7 wherein the flow portion is cylindrical.

9. The container of claim 1 wherein at least part of the flow portion has a dimension in a first direction perpendicular to the central axis of the pin that is greater than a dimension in a second direction perpendicular to the central axis of the pin and at least part of the flow portion is rotationally symmetrical around the central axis of the pin.

10. The container of claim 9 wherein at least part of the flow portion has a flattened surface and at least part of the flow portion is cylindrical.

11. The container of claim 1 , wherein the pin has a pin limiter positioned along a flow portion of the pin for limiting the distance the pin may descend when the pin is engaged.

12. The container of claim 11 , wherein the pin limiter has at least one shoulder and the housing body further comprises a stop positioned along the throat section at or near the housing inlet wherein the at least one shoulder and the stop are sized such that the at least one shoulder contacts the stop to limit the distance the pin can descend when the pin is engaged.

13. The container of claim 1 , wherein the second gasket comprises an elastic material having a hardness that minimizes deformation of a can to which the can tap is attached.

14. The container of claim 1 , wherein the second gasket has a hardness ranging from 70 durometers to 100 durometers.

15. The container of claim 14 , wherein the second gasket has a hardness ranging from 80 durometers to 90 durometers.

16. The container of claim 1 wherein the refrigerant comprises an HFO.

17. The container of claim 16 wherein the refrigerant comprises an HFO and HFC.

18. A method for providing a refrigerant comprising dispensing the refrigerant from the container of claim 1 .

19. The method of claim 18 wherein dispensing comprises recharging an automotive a/c system with the refrigerant.

20. The method of claim 18 wherein the refrigerant comprises an HFO.
