Abstract

A method and system of providing therapy to a patient's uterus is provided, which can include any number of features. The method can include the steps of inserting a uterine device into the uterus and performing a uterine integrity test to determine that the uterus is intact and not perforated. If it is determined that the uterus is not perforated, a patency test can be performed to determine that the uterine device is not clogged or embedded in tissue. If the uterus is intact and the device is not clogged or embedded in tissue, the uterus can be treated with the uterine device, e.g., uterine ablation. Systems for performing these methods are also disclosed.

Claims (26)

1. A method of performing a procedure on a uterus of a patient, the method comprising:

inserting a uterine ablation device into the uterus of the patient;

delivering fluid or gas from an inflow lumen of the uterine ablation device into the uterus;

while delivering the fluid or the gas from the inflow lumen:

removing some of the gas or the fluid through an outflow lumen of the uterine ablation device; and

measuring a flow rate of the fluid or the gas flowing through the inflow lumen; and

in response to detecting that the flow rate of the fluid or the gas flowing through the inflow lumen is above a patency flow rate threshold value while removing some of the gas or the fluid through the outflow lumen, determining that the uterine ablation device is not clogged or embedded in tissue.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising treating the uterus of the patient without reducing distension pressure with the uterine ablation device in response to determining that the uterine ablation device is not clogged or embedded in tissue.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein a module controller of the uterine ablation device automatically initiates treatment of the uterus in response to determining that the uterine ablation device is not clogged or embedded in tissue.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the outflow lumen is distal from the inflow lumen.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising measuring a pressure within the uterus with a pressure sensor on the uterine ablation device.

6. The method of claim 1 , where the patency flow rate threshold value is greater than 5 ml/min.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the flow rate is measured using a flow meter along the inflow lumen.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein delivering the fluid or the gas comprises opening a first valve positioned along the inflow lumen and closing a second valve positioned along the outflow lumen.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein delivering the fluid or the gas comprises opening a third valve, the third valve being positioned along the inflow lumen.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein measuring the flow rate comprises measuring the flow rate with a flow meter that is disposed near a distal tip of the uterine ablation device.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein measuring the flow rate comprises measuring the flow rate with a flow meter that is disposed external to the uterine ablation device along a flow path between a gas or fluid source and the uterine ablation device.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein removing some of the gas or the fluid comprises removing some of the gas or fluid into a waste container fluidly coupled to the uterine ablation device.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein detecting that the flow rate of the fluid or the gas flowing through the inflow lumen is above the patency flow rate threshold value comprises:

performing an analysis of the flow rate of the fluid or the gas flowing through the inflow lumen; and

based on the analysis, automating one or more actions of the uterine ablation device.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising providing feedback to a user of the uterine ablation device based on the analysis of the flow rate of the fluid or the gas flowing through the inflow lumen.

15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising recording the flow rate of the fluid or the gas flowing through the inflow lumen.

16. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

detecting that the flow rate of the fluid or the gas flowing through the inflow lumen is below the patency flow rate threshold value while removing some of the gas or the fluid through the outflow lumen; and

in response to detecting that the flow rate of the fluid or the gas flowing through the inflow lumen is below the patency flow rate threshold value, instructing a user to re-insert the uterine ablation device into the uterus of the patient.
