Abstract

There are disclosed devices, system and methods for continual automated discovering of a topology of a computer network of physical network objects for an application. A first physical network object selects portions of sets of data messages being sent over time by the application and related network objects; and collects network configuration and time dimension information, and timeseries information from the portions of messages. A second physical network object receives the information and uses it to determine topology information for the application over time, which includes unique keys of, types of objects of, types of relationships between pairs of, groupings of, time dimension data of and metrics data of the physical network objects. The topology information can be stored; and can be queried to create and display a graph representation of the topology information that changes over time.

Claims (43)

1 . An apparatus for discovering a topology of a network, comprising:

a processor configured to:

perform a continual automated discovery over a selected period of time by:

receiving a selection of the period of time for discovering the topology of the network;

assigning a unique key to each of a first and a second network object based on configuration information associated with the first and the second network objects and refraining from using an Internet Protocol (IP) address, respectively, wherein the unique key comprises a single key that uniquely identifies each network object from each other;

identifying a relationship between the first and the second network object;

identifying the topology of the network for the selected time period based on the unique keys and the relationship; and

displaying, on a display, a graphical representation of the topology for a selected application executing on a selected network object for the selected period of time, wherein the graphical representation shows types of relationships between each network object connected to the selected network object and the selected network object, time dimension data for the network objects connected to the selected network object, and time series data for the network objects connected to the selected network object; and

repeat the process of performing the continual automated discovery for a subsequent period of time.

2 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to assign the unique key to each of the first and the second network object based further on a specific technology domain associated with the first and second network object, respectively.

3 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to determine the topology of the network based further on a type of the first network object.

4 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to determine the topology of the network based further on metric data information for the first network object.

5 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to group the first network object with the second or another network object, and determine the topology of the network based further on the grouping.

6 . The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the processor is further configured to group the first network object with the second or another network object based on a function of the grouped network objects.

7 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to group the first network object with the second or another network object, and determine the topology of the network based further on a relationship between the grouped network objects and another group of network objects.

8 . An apparatus for creating different types of topologies of a network, comprising:

a user input/output device configured to allow a user to select one of a plurality of topologies; and

a processor configured to:

perform a continual automated discovery over a selected period of time by:

receiving a selection of a period of time for discovering the topology of the network;

assigning a unique key to each of a first and a second network object based on configuration information associated with the first and the seconds network object and refraining from using an Internet Protocol (IP) address, respectively, wherein the unique key comprises a single key that uniquely identifies each network object from each other;

identifying a relationship between the first and the second network object;

creating the selected topology for the selected time period based on the unique key and the relationship; and

causing, on a display, a display of a graphical representation of the topology for a selected application executing on a selected network object for the selected period of time, wherein the graphical representation shows types of relationships between each network object connected to the selected network object and the selected network object, time dimension data for the network objects connected to the selected network object, and time series data for the network objects connected to the selected network object; and

repeat the process of performing the continual automated discovery for a subsequent period of time.

9 . The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein:

the processor is further configured to assign the unique key to each of the first and the second network object based further on a specific technology domain associated with the first and second network object, respectively.

10 . The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein:

the processor is further configured to create the selected topology based further on a type of the first network object.

11 . The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein:

the processor is further configured to create the selected topology based on metric data information for the first network object.

12 . The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein:

the processor is further configured to group the first network object with the second or another network object, and create the selected topology based further on the grouping.

13 . The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein:

the processor is further configured to group the first network object with the second or another network object based on a function of the grouped network objects.

14 . The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein:

the processor is further configured to group the first network object with the second or another network object, and create the selected topology based further on a relationship between the grouped network objects and another group of network objects.

15 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the time data corresponds to a change of a graph representation over time or a chance of a showing of metrics data for each of the network objects over time.

16 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the graphical representation further comprises a time bar having a range from a beginning to an end of a period of time and a slidable location indicator on the time bar that can be located along the period of time by an input to select displaying the graphical representation at points in time selected using the slidable location indicator such that the indicator may be slid forward or backward along the period of time to display changes between a first point in time and a second point in time on the bar.

17 . The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein changes in the graphical representation are shown as visually indicated by at least one of highlighting, shadowing, fading, lightening, darkening, bold, underline, or italics.

18 . The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the time data corresponds to a change of a graph representation over time or a chance of a showing of metrics data for each of the network objects over time.

19 . The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the graphical representation further comprises a time bar having a range from a beginning to an end of a period of time and a slidable location indicator on the time bar that can be located along the period of time by an input to select displaying the graphical representation at points in time selected using the slidable location indicator such that the indicator may be slid forward or backward along the period of time to display changes between a first point in time and a second point in time on the bar.
