Abstract

A recipient communication device and method wherein a user authenticates a message that is being received. The method includes receiving, by a messaging utility of the recipient communication device, a message transmitted from a sender communication device. The messaging utility determines that one of (a) sender authentication of the message and (b) recipient authentication to open the message is required. In response to sender authentication being required, the recipient communication device transmits a request to the sender communication device for sender authentication of the message, and receives a certification of the message based on an authentication of a user input via the sender communication device. When recipient authentication is required, the recipient is prompted to enter biometric input at the recipient device. In one embodiment, a clearinghouse service authenticates a user of a communication device in order for the recipient communication device to receive certification of the user and/or the message.

Claims (48)

1. A system for authentication, comprising:

a verification clearinghouse comprising:

an interface for communication with a plurality of user devices;

one or more memories; and

one or more processors configured to:

receive user account information and a first image of a face of a first user from a first user device;

store the user account information and the first image of the face of the first user to create a certified account for the first user in the one or more memories;

receive a request for using the certified account for authentication of the first user of the first device;

identify the stored first image of the face of the first user;

receive a second image from the first user device;

compare the second image received from the first user device with the first image of the face of the first user;

generate and transmit a certification token to the first device when a face of the second image is determined to be the same as the face of the first image; and

establish a user session by authenticating the first user of the first device to apply the certification token in a first application in response to determining that the first user is a known user,

wherein the first application is executed by the first user device during the user session, and wherein the first user is reauthenticated periodically.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors of the verification clearinghouse are further configured to provide the first user access to the first application when the first user is authenticated.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors of the verification clearinghouse are further configured to provide to a second device a certification of authentication of the first user based on the image received from the first user device.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to receive secondary authentication input from the first user, and wherein the determining whether to authenticate the first user is further based on the secondary authentication input.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors of the verification clearinghouse are further configured to determine whether authentication is required based on a context of the first user device.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the first user device is configured to automatically capture the image of the first user without assistance from the first user, and wherein the first user device performs facial recognition based upon the first user's face being within a focal plane of a camera lens of the first user device.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the received first image is encrypted.

8. A method for authentication, comprising:

receiving, with one or more processors of a verification clearinghouse, user account information and a first image of a face of a first user from a first user device;

storing, in memory of a verification clearinghouse, the user account information and the first image of the face of the first user to create a certified account for the first user;

receiving, with one or more processors of a verification clearinghouse, a request for using the certified account for authentication of the first user of the first device;

identifying, from the memory of the verification clearinghouse, the stored first image of the face of the first user;

receiving, with the one or more processors, a second image from the first user device;

comparing, with the one or more processors, the second image received from the first user device with the first image of the face of the first user; and

generating and transmitting, with the one or more processors, a certification token to the first device when a face of the second image is determined to be the same as the face of the first image; and

establishing, with the one or more processors, a user session by authenticating the first user of the first device to apply the certification token in a first application in response to determining that the first user is a known user,

wherein the first application is executed by the first user device during the user session, and wherein the first user is reauthenticated periodically.

9. The method of claim 8 , further comprising providing, by the one or more processors, the first user access to the first application when the first user is authenticated.

10. The method of claim 8 , further comprising providing, by the one or more processors, to a second device a certification of authentication of the first user based on the image received from the first user device.

11. The method of claim 8 , further comprising receiving, by the one or more processors, secondary authentication input from the first user, and wherein the determining whether to authenticate the first user is further based on the secondary authentication input.

12. The method of claim 8 , further comprising determining, by the one or more processors, whether authentication is required based on a context of the first user device.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein receiving the image of the face of the first user from the first user device comprises automatically capturing, by the first user device, the image of the first user without assistance from the first user.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising performing facial recognition based upon the first user's face being within a focal plane of a camera lens of the first user device.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions executable by one or more processors for performing a method for authentication, comprising:

receiving user account information and a first image of a face of a first user from a first user device;

storing the user account information and the first image of the face of the first user to create a certified account for the first user;

receiving a request for using the certified account for authentication of the first user of the first device;

identifying the stored first image of the face of the first user;

receiving a second image from the first user device;

comparing the second received from the first user device with the first image of the face of the first user; and

generating and transmitting a certification token to the first device when a face of the second image is determined to be the same as the face of the identified first image; and

establishing a user session by authenticating the first user of the first device to apply the certification token in a first application in response to determining that the first user is a known user,

wherein the first application is executed by the first user device during the user session, and wherein the first user is reauthenticated periodically.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 15 , the instructions further comprising providing the first user access to the first application when the first user is authenticated.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 15 , the instructions further comprising providing to a second device a certification of authentication of the first user based on the image received from the first user device.
